Hi, I'm a 2nd year business studies student in UL and I'm completely stuck in 2 minds over whether to major in HR or Risk management. I've always had my eye on HR but I'm having thoughts about risk at the moment. I got a B2 in both exams at Christmas too so that isn't helping me choose!... Anyone have any advice, to do with employment opportunities or anything? Any help appreciated greatly.

Solo function Risk management or HR jobs are generally not career opportunities in SME companies. You may be better off posting in one of the other Career type forums.
Try to find out what it is like to work is like in both to help you make an informed choice.

Risk management would probably help you more if you want to start your own business.
HR...pretty boring stuff in terms of a career.

Don't worry about it too much, I wouldn't be boxing yourself in to a career just yet before you have lived and really know what you want.

Depends on what you want for you future, to open a business or to try and climb the corporate ladder. Hard to know at your age, lots of things to happen to you yet that will determine your direction in life.

A graduate of the BBS in UL myself, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I selected Accounting and Finance as a major with Entrepreneurship as a minor. Why I decided to pick accounting is beyond me as I had no ability or interest in it. Only pick it if you want to keep a career in accountancy or taxation open to you in the future, in order to benefit from the exemptions.

I would more so choose based on what interests you and what you feel your results would benefit most from. As I didn't like accounting at all, my overall final grade suffered.

You can always specialise at postgraduate level if that interests you. Either way, just make sure you check out all of the modules for each major in detail, and maybe speak to a lecturer on one of the modules in a major for direction.
