laptop not charged

Hi, Since the last year or so I cannot use my laptop without the charger being plugged in the whole time. If I unplugged the charger it would shut down with in 5 minutes. It says the whole time that it is 86 per cent available (plugged in, not charging). What could the problem be?? Thanks for your help.

The battery is probably shot.

+1 OP what you're describing is the classic symptom of a battery that has run out of capacity so needs replacing.
