Am jealous of all the cuts, I'm one 0.1 away from fnishing where I started this year. Putting was a strong part of my game but is an achilles heel lately. Can get the ball to the green but just cant get it in the hole.

My update for 2014 so far, 9 buffers, 10 0.1's and cuts of 0.4 and 0.6 so basically back to where I started the year! 5 or 6 counting competitions left so would be nice just to finish the year on 7.4 at this stage. Pretty happy with the year overall though.

Monthly Medal last Saturday had a huge chance to get down to 4 but completely bottled it. Had a four foot birdie putt on the 14th to go -1, lipped out then somehow managed to play the last four +5 to only finish in the buffer.

Hopefully the weather holds out and we get a few more qualifying weeks before the break.

passed my target for the year at least. played some steady golf without having strokes of luck along the way. very happy with the way my new putter is working and there is scope for improvement with the irons/wedges yet as i get used to them.


going to be interesting setting the target for next year!!

Still waiting for 2 separate scores of 0.1 from society events I played to come back which will have my handicap down to 4.6.

Suppose you have to take the rough with the smooth. After getting down to 12.1 a while ago, I've now slipped all the way back to 12.6. Still going to push to get back down to 12 before the season ends.

Generally speaking the game is good, but keep making stupid mistakes....

Interested to hear how you have managed this. That is a staggering drop in handicap in one season. :eek:

Considering you started the year at nearly the same handicap as me, need advice to follow you!

Cheers, it's been a work progress for about 18 months, I was off 14 in March 2013 but was shooting in the buffer most rounds without doing anything special. I changed from a strong right hand grip to a more neutral grip (took a while and lots of visits to the range, felt terrible to begin with), then I got lessons, found out that what I thought was a decent setup and swing was over the top with a swaying hips. I worked hard on that all of last summer and managed to get to 13 by October.

In November last year I got an inch taken off the length of my irons and this actually made a big difference. I played most weekends through the winter months and the improvements were beginning to kick in. Was asked to trial for the clubs PP team so then I started practicing my short game and putting. That's when the big improvements started tbh.
I set a target of single figures for the year, I got off to a fast start and got there with an 1 shot ESR in early May. I played PP off 9 (not a bandit!!).

When I first got to single figures I was kind of afraid of what way the rest of my year would go. I just re-adjusted my goals and didn't care if I shot 72, 80 or 90. I have more .1's back this year than I had all of last yr but I'm just playing more very good rounds when the short game is good. Short game is the most important thing if you want to get your handicap down.

I played consistently sh1te for the rest of the summer. Started the year 12.4 & look like finishing 12.4 with counting comps running out. I'm in fear of another horrible .1. Promised wind howling tomorrow but I guess I have to get out there and give it a go, fingers crossed

I was just looking back over howdidido and my last year's handicap was 19.6, not 20.0. Apologies.

No more qualifying comps that I can play in my club this year so this should be my starting handicap for next year.

Got my first handicap, 28 I had hoped for better but didn't deserve any better. Only positive is I can't get any worse. And I should stop being stupid going for shots I really can't hit. Hopefully can score a sub 100 which would start it going in the right direction.
