A 2158 update from Met Eireann

Cold tonight with some showery rain; turning to sleet and snow in parts, mainly on higher ground but also occurring on some lower levels. Risk of thunder too. The first band of rain, hail, sleet and snow will clear northeastwards early tonight, but later in the night further showers will follow, with the continuing threat of snow. A sharp ground frost setting in for a time with the risk of a few icy stretches, especially inland. Becoming very windy or stormy later tonight; southwest winds will increase to gale force with some severe gusts later in the night, especially across west and southwest counties. Lowest temperatures of +2 to -2 degrees Celsius.
    hr.gif

    Tomorrow

Saturday, will be very windy or stormy. Showers will be heavy and wintry with further falls of hail, sleet and snow. Any snow clearing early in the day. Southwest gales will be accompanied by some severe gusts - especially in the west and south, where there will be a continuing risk of coastal flooding due to extremely high seas and high spring tides. Highest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees Celsius.

    Outlook

Saturday night will see westerly winds continuing to moderate in all areas while backing southwesterly; showers will become isolated also and confined to Atlantic coastal counties. Sunday will start mainly dry and possibly bright in places, most likely in the east. However, it will become overcast during the day and outbreaks of rain or drizzle will spread north to affect many areas by early night; winds backing southerly will increase strong and gusty again everywhere also.

The first half of Monday is likely to continue wet and windy throughout the country but a clearance to showers and moderate, southwesterly breezes will come through in the afternoon. Monday night will be mainly dry with clear spells but it will turn colder, with frost and the possibility of ice in places.

Tuesday looks like being dry and bright for daylight hours, though staying cold; however, southeasterly winds seem set to strengthen significantly by early night, with heavy rain likely to spread north across the country overnight before clearing on Wednesday morning. The remainder of next week will most likely have no worse than moderate or fresh breezes and only scattered showers; many areas will have dry periods, with the chance of some sunshine by day but also frost developing at night.

Similar intensity to Stephen's Day system except striking during the day. I suspect this storm will be felt strongly in some central and eastern parts as the low exits tomorrow afternoon with gusts to 65kt in showers. Touching 70-75kt along some exposed western/southern extremities.

Nothing exceptional wind wise but a strong system. What could be exceptional is the combination of a strong storm, a large legacy sea swell all striking right in unison with a high Spring Tide maximum.

A much criticised land mark on Dublin's O'Connell street that actually is quite interesting and striking and wasn't as ridiculously expensive as many make out.

Winds starting to increase here, nothing major, gusting to just over 40mph. While I know that snow is important to some I wondered if there are any updates from the buoys as to wave heights and wind speeds etc ?

    NW Clare

K4 in outer Donegal Bay now down to 956 mb, waves 9.8m, both trends are increasing as low begins to move faster now. Expect winds on west coast to increase steadily after 0300h.
