We're clueless idiots sailing the Shannon

    Hey,

Me and some friends have booked a boat on the Shannon but we've no idea what we're doing. We reckon we can just figure stuff out but we noticed that (according to the very old and ugly website) the locks close at 12:30 in the day during February? Is this true? We also read a lot of them are automatic so surely they'd have no reason to close them? Especially at such an early time.

We were hoping to get from Ballinamore to Enniskillen but apparently there's loads of locks on the way so we'd end up getting stuck considering they only open for a few hours a day... We're going from Friday the 7th to the 10th of February.

Anyone able to lend some insight?

    Thanks

EDIT: This is our starting point: http://goo.gl/maps/65vv5

Your hire company should be able to help you out with all your questions and plan your trip to meet the lock times. Here are some times and phone numbers that might help https://www.silverlinecruisers.com/LocksTimes.pdf
Maybe someone else will have a bit more info for you "not my neck of the woods" or if not try asking on http://www.iwai.ie/forum/list.php?1

Enjoy your trip and let us know how you got on :)

So the automatic locks close at 12.30pm? That seems ridiculous. Same with the 9.00am / 12.30pm times for the locks. Not exactly very flexible...

Just got this email from Waterways Ireland:
The opening hours of the Locks on the Shannon-Erne Waterway are as follows:
    · 09.00 to 20.00 daily from 17th March to 31st October

    · 09.00 to Dusk i.e. daylight hours from 1st November to 16th March

Waterway Patrollers are located along the waterway to assist boat users and can be contacted by telephone. You will find their contact details on the back of the smart cards used to operate the locks and service blocks.

That's not bad then - some time around 5pm then?
