    Dear All

Joined Netflix's free membership for the month but can't download Microsoft Silverlight Plug in to enable downloading of programmes. Actually I can't access microsoft.com website at all. Using google chrome as my browser but have unistalled and reinstalled and no joy. Have also looked at my security settings and firewall but no joy either. Am using Windows XP. Am not completly useless IT wise but have no clue how to fix this. Any suggestions?

Internet explorer. What happens when you go to Microsoft.com?

  • Registered Users Posts: 27 Roseviolet

Ah should have guessed - no it doesn't work on IE either. When I go to microsoft.com it says that the website is not available. Thanks runawaybishop

When go for further info following comes up

he server at www.microsoft.com can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed. DNS is the network service that translates a website's name to its Internet address. This error is most often caused by having no connection to the Internet or a misconfigured network. It can also be caused by an unresponsive DNS server or a firewall preventing Google Chrome from accessing the network.
    Check your Internet connection.
Check any cables and reboot any routers, modems, or other network devices you may be using.
    Check your DNS settings.
Contact your network administrator if you're not sure what this means.
    Try disabling network prediction.
Go to the Chrome menu > Settings > Show advanced settings... and deselect "Predict network actions to improve page load performance." If this does not resolve the issue, we recommend selecting this option again for improved performance.
Allow Chrome to access the network in your firewall or antivirus settings.
If it is already listed as a program allowed to access the network, try removing it from the list and adding it again.
If you use a proxy server...
Check your proxy settings or contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working. If you don't believe you should be using a proxy server: Go to the Chrome menu > Settings > Show advanced settings... > Change proxy settings... > LAN Settings and deselect "Use a proxy server for your LAN".
    Error code: ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED

No it doesn't work on internet explorer. Whats DNS???.....

    Can you visit any site?

As mentioned, you appear to have a DNS lookup problem.
DNS translates web domain addresses into IP addresses like 65.55.57.27.

If it's affecting only Microsoft, it might be that a bad value has been added to your hosts file (c:\windows\system32\Drivers\etc\hosts) by malware in an attempt to stop you from downloading updates.

If you press the Windows Key on the keyboard (beside the left ALT key) together with the r key it will bring up the run dialog.

Type in CMD and hit enter. (to bring up a command window)

    type in
    nslookup www.microsoft.com

    It should return
Server: <the name of your router>
Address: <the ip of your router>

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: lb1.www.ms.akadns.net
    Address: 65.55.57.27
    Aliases: www.microsoft.com
              toggle.www.ms.akadns.net
              g.www.ms.akadns.net

    or very similar.

If not, you might want to consider running malwarebytes to check for viruses.

    Still saying microsoft not available

  • Registered Users Posts: 27 Roseviolet

And just tried downloading malwarebytes and its saying also saying its not available - so sorry problem not just with microsoft

Have you an antivirus already installed? Not beig able to reach Microsoft or malwarebytes is suspicious. You could try booting into safe mode with network support and downloading malwarebytes then.
edit: pressing f8 when the computer is booting (at the bios screen) should get you into safe mode options.

Ok - will go and try that. Thanks runaway. Sorry I had to go there for a bit.

Hi runaway. Tried downloading malwarebytes in safe mode but couldn't access internet at all (Use UBB for internet connection) so couldn't download.

sounds like virus then. Think maybe I should bring it somewhere to get it sorted

Press the Windows key and R at the same time, and in the box that appears, type:

    notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

And press OK. Is there anything there that doesn't have a # at the beginning of the line?

  • Registered Users Posts: 27 Roseviolet

    Hi Testicle

    Got this below

    Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    127.0.0.1 localhost

Did you select "Safe Mode with Networking"? In regular safe mode all network adapters are disabled.

The hosts file looks OK. Open a command prompt (Win key + R, then type cmd), then type

    ping www.microsoft.com

    and ping www.malwarebytes.org

you should see something like this:

    C:\Users\User>ping www.malwarebytes.org

Pinging cs88.wac.edgecastcdn.net [93.184.220.117] with 32 bytes of data:
    Reply from 93.184.220.117: bytes=32 time=56ms TTL=54
    Reply from 93.184.220.117: bytes=32 time=58ms TTL=54
    Reply from 93.184.220.117: bytes=32 time=75ms TTL=54
    Reply from 93.184.220.117: bytes=32 time=53ms TTL=54

    Ping statistics for 93.184.220.117:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 53ms, Maximum = 75ms, Average = 60ms

Incidentally, here, now, my pings fail to www.microsoft.com. I'm using UPC

If you put Microsoft.com's ip address into a web browser does it bring up anything?
    http://65.55.57.27

Can you download malwarebytes chameleon from
    http://data-cdn.mbamupdates.com/v1/tools/chameleon/data/mbam-chameleon-1.62.1.1000.zip

Can you confirm that your version of XP is at service pack 3? (Control Panel \ System)
