I remember seeing a documentary by the Beeb on this topic about 2 - 3 years ago.
Was rather surprised to learn that about 1% of births display at least some hint of intersexuality, and about 1 in 1500 births are ambiguous enough to warrant attention like surgery. By warrant, I mean there can be issues relating to essential things like urination that must be remedied for the wellbeing of the person, not to reassign the gender one way or the other.
