My old but serviceable Dell Latitude D610 has decided that I need to boot it up with the CD that came with it. This is not possible for me to do as I bought the laptop 2nd or 3rd hand and no disc. Any help in getting a cd or a loan of one would be appreciated as the laptop contains family photos. I can get a cd from a Dell Demension . Not the same but nearly as old. Would my laptop boot up with this or would it self destruct. ;):)

What's the exact message/error you get when you boot it up?

YOU can use a live cd,
eg mint 7 on 1 cdr to bootup, and acess data,or any files, photo on the laptop.

    http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=38
    download iso file,
use Imgburn free program to burn image,
SET options burn speed to 2x or 4x.
    put cd in laptop, reboot,
it should load os into memory.

    try DSL damn small linux,
    designed for older pcs laptops,
    OR ebcd ,emergency boot disk,
    ultimate book disk,

one of those gives you a menu to acess files copy, them onto a usb drive.

DId YOU TRY Safe mode, f8, hold f8 key till menu appears on bootup.
on older laptops with slow cpu,s it may take 5-10 mins for linux to load into memory.
even if windows files are missing ,
you should still be able to acess files ,photos using a live cd,
ITS even possible to load linux from a usb key 1gig ,
without installing or changing any file on the hardisk.

I used damn small linux, on a 1ghz CPU thinkpad ,laptop ,
it should work fine on your laptop,
    its 50meg file download

    http://www.dell.com/support/my-support/us/en/19/product-support/product/latitude-d610/manuals

    http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/
    BOOTS from cdr or usb

older versions of linux, are faster ,if you are just copying files from an older pc or laptop.

ON laptops which cannot load windows in safe mode,
it s usually a virus which deletes windows boot files,
or it maybe old hardrive hardware fault.
BACKUP all your files ,documents ,
do a complete os reinstall if you still have the windows
    xp disc.
REINSTALL windows xp,install process formats drive c, which will delete any virus,es you might have.

    I'm still not getting you...

    1. Laptop sitting on table powered off.
    2. You hit power.
    3. What happens next?

Getting your data back shouldn't be a problem - either a live cd or hirems boot CD or even take the drive out and stick it in a caddy.

Get that drive out and put it into a Caddy before you completely lose your photos. When you boot from any live CD, if your hard drive in damaged there's going to be startup problems. You can remove the drive and boot from a live cd THEN with the drive in a caddy connect it via usb.

THE point of a live cd it boots the os ,linux into pc ram,
the drive hard disk doesnt need to boot up at all,
UNLESS you are a techie expert ,
Its safer to use a live cd ,
    and browse to drive c,
copy the files to a usb drive ,or another drive in the system.
ON linux it shows up as drive 0,hard disk
or my computer ,filesytem, drive 1 ,hardisk
    or something similar.
my laptops may not boot ,but the files are still there,
    in ,my docs,user 1 docs,my music,my pictures etc

it can take 10 minutes to boot up linux into ram on an old dell laptop.
