My in-laws both aged over 65 are currently insured on the old VHI plan B.They currently pay by DD and I have convinced them to switch to a Connectcare plan with LAYA as its currently a lot cheaper that VHI plan b and good cover. There current contract with VHI expires on the 7th March 2014 and their last DD payment will be taken on 8th February.
Now it turns out the price will increase on the LAYA plan from 1st March so they would need to sign up by 28th February to get the old/cheaper price.
So what I am wondering is can they leave VHI on the 27th February before the end of their contract renewal date seeing as they will have paid the last payment anyhow and join Laya the same day or would VHI make them pay a penalty .
Or can they just join up with Laya on the 27th February and then just notify VHI that they will not be renewing when the get their renewal letter ie(They would have two policies for 1 week ).
Thanks its just im trying to get them signed up with LAYA before the price increases come in.

Just get them to cancel the VHI plan at renewal and start the Laya plan in Feb, they'll have an overlap in cover for a few days but will save loads by doing this.

Cancelling the policy means WRITING to them otherwise this state corporation will continue to dip their fingers in your in laws wallets monthly. Do not make assumptions about cancellation cos of phone conversation you have had with them. Write to them (yes, 2013 digital age) It's all about the direct debit !

By the way you can't find a cancellation form on the VHI website. You can find VHI cancellation forms on the competitors websites and vice versa. Hmmm....

Not necessary. A phone call is fine - you dont have to write. You just have to make sure that you actually instruct a cancellation and not assume. Which is the case with all insurers
