Rain has eased off now and it's much calmer

appalling conditions outside, very heavy rain and gusty winds. Gusts approaching 50 kt here right by the sea I'd say

Wind is still strong but there's now blue skies over Cork, lot of clouds coming behind it though

Which direction are those winds coming from>

You can see the direction on the forecast map. Winds will vary depending on your local geography. Places that are exposed to the strongest winds or on high ground should see very strong gusts.

I dunno, would expect the weather to show it's mussels... :D

I've heard of 'cats and dogs' but you know it's bad when it starts raining shellfish.

    :D

Thanks for the early warning of this storm folks. Fortunately I'm in a position to be able to cancel my outside work today. Not sensible or safe. :)

Torrential rain here - as bad as anything I've seen in this awful winter.
We badly need a big stationary limpet high to dry the place out!

Very windy and blustery here and that's only under my sheets! :p Seriously though, the wind outside has woken me twice this morning and this storm hasn't peaked yet. I've to drive to Youghal for 12pm, seriously thinking of giving it a miss! I'm in Rathcormac

Hirlam placing sustained winds to around 45 knots over Dublin @ 5pm.
near Arklow here I'm directly exposed to the south ,there's nothing between me and the sea and nothing but sea in a straight line to near France.I'm expecting mad gusts later and more damage.
lost several trees on the farm since December.
what a day for my weather station wind vain to be out of action.
Too busy today to fix it :(

This thread is very large , its got great info but .

Could anyone synopsise the current state of affairs and the forecast for the next 12 hoours.
Is there a phase 1 and phase 2 due?
    Are we in phase 1?
Whats the track of the storms ?
Are we looking at 1997 ?

    thanks in advance

Question for the posters here - are funnel clouds possible with this system? Pretty certain I just spotted one off the Cork side of M7 in Limerick

From estofex - "Tornadoes are not ruled out either, given the intense low level shear..."

So yep, you could have seen one..

Ridiculous squally hail shower passed by 10 minutes ago, gave the house a right battering. Don't think cycling to the gym is an option today!
