Wind really picking up again on the east coast, noise roaring, are these just stray gusts?

It's it's last deep exhalation I'd say, before it batters Scotland. it will start to pick up energy on the Irish sea, ingesting large quantities of warm and cold matter making it fatter to then take over the Scottish Isles.

If you were to combine TV3's attitude with RTE's resources I think we'd have among the best Television networks in the world.

    Alas, theyre different beasts.

Still not convinced that Met Eireann did that much wrong. They called an extreme event, unlike Michael Fish in 87.

Those going to call for MÉ heads to roll need to realise that the guidance up until 9.30pm last night was for maximum gusts overland of around 130-140km/h with some models showing a trend of slight downgrades up to that point and a good element of doubt. After that time a red warning should definitely have been in place for more places but it wasn't as catastrophic a miscalculation as some are suggesting.

They simply didn't call it early enough and much as though the colour of the warning is irrelevant to us, a red warning for the south at 9pm yesterday and a red warning for Dublin at first light would have been more appropriate, probably would have kept schools, etc closed where the orange warning did not. The public and much more importantly the media react to a level 3/red much moreso than we do as ameteurs/enthusiasts.

The impression I get is that they like me thought it was going to downgrade from borderline Level 3 to Level 2 overnight, and they didn't want to cause undue hassle to literally millions of people. Instead it upgraded from borderline Level 3 to Definite Level 3.

The lesson? Err or on the side of bloody caution! :)

ESB rep on TV3 said met eireann has told them to be on standby for another red alert on Friday, I'd say he wasn't meant to say that. Models don't indicate that we'll be in the firing for the strongest winds for Fri/Sat storm & gradient not as strong as today's. Nevertheless it's a significant storm so one to watch closely (will cause more misery for UK)

After today, a lot of infrastructure will have been weakened and a less intense wind event may still cause a significant amount of issues. Not to mention all the trees that will have been weakened too.

Heard an Ambulance crashed in Cork due to the wind.

Power was gone in Cahir between 8.30 and about 9.10. Back now, just hoping for a little snow to end the day!

Also did the winds hit hurricane level today?

I think he may have been a little confused on the alert system. He said we had 10 red alert storms so far this winter which I don't think it's correct. It'd be understandable if he misspoke after all the stress and work they've had today .

Finally got power back here in East Cork about 20mins ago, after it went at 12:30 today! Today was a frightening experience! Paschal Sheehy just said that Met Eireann have been warning the public with a while that today would be serious....it's a pity only Pascal got the memo & not everyone else!

Windy again now in Dublin 18.

Here is what we are talking about Friday morning, nowhere near as severe as today, but nonetheless strong easterly winds onto the southeast and east coast getting to around 40 knots sustained on the coast.

The latest HIRLAM shows Friday's low as a much weaker system than todays storm which was a much rarer event.

It shows a brief period of strong gales along the south and east coasts, but no storm force winds and much weaker inland winds than we had today. There could be a fair bit of heavy rain with it though and it could push some big waves up on the south and east coasts because of the very southerly long fetch.

Edit : Of course keep an eye on the forecast for changes, still 2 ways away.

Plugged this thread on twitter with the #tv3weather tag. Maybe if others do the same might get a little recognition for all the work and contributions from all.

Power just back on here near Dingle - gone since before noon. ESB crews out in this are legends.
Still very windy here but after this morning the word "storm" has a new meaning :( At least 20 big trees down here, road still blocked and the clean up will take ages - but thankfully no casualties it seems.
Thanks to all who shared the experiences -- hopefully we won't have a similar event for many a year to come.

Well Cork mightn't have made the RTE news but it made CNN - just had list of highest winds and cork was there :-D

Violent storm force 11 I think, Max gust was at Shannon so you likely got the worst if it in Limerick. Wouldn't be surprised if winds were hurricane force somewhere on the Kerry coast but no met stations picked it up

Power finally back, ESB were saying it would be gone till tomorrow afternoon due to the 'hurricane'

18Z GFS shows a band of 85-90 km/h gusts possible across the country running from south to north on Friday. Not severe like today, but could be strong enough to bring down some weakened tree limbs etc. from todays storm.

The strongest winds look very likely to be headed for southern England this time.

Something to keep an eye on anyway.
