Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

How did the knee work out for him Darragh? Interested in this, my ould lad had his hip replaced must be 9 or 10 years ago. He's fierce bad knees but put off on the op by another man who had fairly big problems, didn't help hip surgeon told him at the time the knee op wasn't as successful.

He should have had the knee done about 10 years ago but a few neighbors had horror stories with them. He waited till last year cos the success rate is now 95% and back then is was really only 50/50

Mine got one of his done around 7 years ago and it was such a bad job that he won't get the other one done. I know from your posts that it doesn't apply with your father but mine reckons you'd want to be almost stopping work for them to work i.e. that they're not able for any punishment.

Was talking to SIL of women who we have land off today. His son broke his hip in a hurling match 16mths ago and has been on crutches since.
Got a hip replacement thus week.
    He's only 16, he'll have 4 if not 5 in his lifetime I'd say

I doubt if there is and other normal profession that puts their bodies through the physical hardship that a farmer does. That will lead on to hips, knees and shoulder replacement ops early than normal people

It isn't simple. I'm 34 and mine is gone from playing sport. Had two ops and the next is a replacement. Can't run or jog now, lucky I'm in a office job.
Trying to mind it now and stretch out the d day.

Got the lawnmower and lawn all finished up there. Would love to head for a cycle but after 22k yesterday I got a puncture on the way home. Had done that in 48minutes too. Tempted to get a new/second hand road bike, any suggestions? Will have to have a look on DD.

seems to be lots of road bikes on donedeal at the moment. A cynic would think that its people who got them on the "bike to work" scheme and are now cashing them in.
I would go for an alloy framed one, rather than carbon. get as good a quality group set as you can. I have a Specialized, and find that their own brand "Flak-Jacket" tyres are very good. Seriously puncture resistant.

I think a lot of people have come to the end of the 5 year bike to work scheme and are eligible to go again. At least I am anyway. I must go again!

Really? You find they have good puncture resistance? I ride over a LOT of glass and shred tyres. there's no way those tyres would last me!

Yep adverts and done deal are great. I don't know about not buying carbon, I would, depending on the frame, use, age and maintenance. I would say get a cheapie, see how you like it then get a nice one. The Halfords Carerra TDF gets good reviews and people seem to be happy with it so that might be a good start.

Also the BTW scheme means there are more second hand options for people like me who can't get it but want second hand bikes :D

I don't know about tractors, but that is madness. No company can keep doing that long term and stay in business. I was in the states a while back and every second advert on tv was for cars.

100% get a road bike, makes everything easier, and really bullet proof tires, like Schwalbe Marathon's or Gatorskins. Re new bike, the cycling forum has about a million new bike threads to look up:
http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=410. Depends on what you want to do, where etc.
I would say get a second hand bike to start with and see if you get into it and you can upgrade then. Warning: It gets really addictive, you won't find it till you're doing serious mileage and speed. Have you though about doing a sportive at the end of the summer? Something to aim and train for maybe?
You can't beat a good pedal of an evening. Clears the mind heading out for a few hours

It's already addictive! Always loved cycling but never went more than 4 mile. Started doing 22k regularly and pushed up to 35k a bit too. Would hope to be doing 60k+ regularly if I got the road bike, well able for 50k as things stand but nowhere near fit. Been averaging about 25kph+ so far.

Not considered anything like a sportive really. Motivation isn't an issue. Would hope to be able to do over 100k by the end of the summer.

Been looking on done deal, looks to be some great value. Rather buy once, hence buying s/h. Would pay 500 for a good one like.

Spend all your budget on the bike and pick up the gear as ya go along!

Some of the Lidl or Aldi gear is fine to get ya goin. The dearer components are worth it in the long run!

Not sure if it is as it seems. Ireland is not unique in consumers buying cars at start of year.So car makers have to stockpile. all year long until Jan1st. Only now would the stockpile be reduced down. Google maps is not real time so you cannot check at present.

the sports clinic in santry, they are brilliant at hip /knee operations, its not a hospital as such ,its run as a business. Great service. My mother was operated on -for her back- on easter saturday in santry and was allowed home on the monday. I am sure if she was going to hospital to get the op done there wouldnt have been a chance of it being done over easter weekend

€500 will get you a grand second hand bike. For that you will be looking at an aluminium frame, carbon forks, and I would want at least Shimano tiagra as a groupset, you may even get 105 on an older bike. Wheels and groupset are where it's at weight and quality wise, the most popular frames have a lifetime guarantee (trek, giant, specialised, felt, fuji, but not from Cube, lapierre, my head is empty at the min). Wheel wise, look for something that has had the wheelset upgraded, stock wheels can be ****e and it's what bike companies save money on, or buy one with crappy wheels and upgrade yourself. Adverts, done deal and eBay are your man.

Also buying bikes is addictive. I 'need' another two. :D

Sportives are a nice aim,I always trained and cycled on my own. 100+k is way easier when your with people, and you stop for tea and cake in the middle ;)

Well rifle rounds do travel a good distance that's the problem with them. Anyone firing them have to be aware of the time of flight and fall of shot. Did you notice any shooting lately.

If she is landing on Window sill two bare wires one an earth and connect the other to the electric fence. Brother had this a few years ago a crow doing somthing similar. Could not get it with the shotgun as the minute the crow heard the dood opening it was gone. It used to be evening time when it would do it. So he left the door ajar one day and the crow never heard anything again after the shotgun fired.

Hi, I found the flakjackets pretty good, but then don't ride in much urban setting, so glass is pretty rare.
Probably the luddite in me, prefer weldable alloy to the black art of carbon fibre.
