Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is Ricky Van Wolfswinkle an actual footballer or is it all some elaborate Make A Wish deal?

I put a fiver on Spurs at 9/1. Just to put the mockers on them.

I have €50 on them pre-game. Have no problem losing it.

    edit - I mean, I'm 100% going to collect.

It's very tense considering we know Spurs will win.

Just seen that the keeper for Napoli (Cabral) is ruled for 6 months so that should see Reina making at least extra appearances.

    They've shown nothing today.

What was the consensus here on Soldado before he signed for Spurs? I was very disappointed that we signed Sturridge and didn't make a move for Soldado last year :)

That was probably the most attacking setup in terms of personal, position and tactics that I've seen under Rodgers which is saying something. We had at times the two full backs pushed up the pitch with Henderson/Coutinho pushed right up behind the attack in a 1-2 midfield. So when we attacked at times the team looked something like this

    Sterling
    Suarez
    Sturridge

    Johnson
    Coutinho
    Henderson
    Flanagan

    Gerrard

    Skrtel
    Agger

    ^^^Mad stuff altogether.

I don't think we pressed effectively enough high up the pitch which meant we didn't retain or recycle the ball enough. I thought Allen coming on changed that considerably. He was very good when he came on. It does though mean when the ball is turned over high up the pitch that a quick pass into central midfield and we're generally looking at being cut wide open with only Gerrard and two defenders to beat. Ideally I'd like a strong, fast powerful player where Gerrard is in that system.

Rodgers actually tried to play a very similar way when he first arrived at Liverpool but pragmatism won out with a more conservative approach which was more tailored to the players at his disposal. He clearly feels like he can make it work with the current group.

A team consists of a few sub-groups and one of them is clearly not working

    GK
    CB----CB
    DM

All really need to start talking to each other or at least pointing a lot, as in "play it there" or "drop closer here" as it is Mig is stuck on his line while the rest hardly know where each other is - or is going to be.

Came on to ask this question, and we have 2 opposing views here - to what extent is our poor defensive record down to personnel as opposed to tactics?

Do the tactics need to be tweaked or the personnel changed?

It's probably a little of both, but it does seem that a lot of out defensive woes come from individual errors.

I think a big thing is Gerrard. For me he's had some top performances in DM in the last month and the benefit of having him starting attacks from deep was evident with the winner today, particularly with the options he has to pick out.

However, when we're playing the type of setup outlined by opr above, Gerrard is certainly not mobile or athletic enough to get through the absolute mountain of defensive work asked of him. To play bombing fullbacks AND two CMs running beyond the front 3 requires a DM of phenomenal defensive ability, speed, fitness and athleticism. Is playing Gerrard in a 1-2 (particularly when one of those 2 is the very attack mixed Coutinho) asking for trouble?

At the same time, do we want to curb our incredible attacking ability? Do we want to tell 2 goal Henderson to hold his forward runs? Do we want to replace someone with the flair and speed of Coutinho, with a more solid all-rounder like Allen?
