Trying to beef up a Dell Dimension 9200.

    It's currently got

The standard sound outputs that come with the case (five different coloured
    3.5mm sockets)

a PCIe sound card which I'd like to remove.

I took it out the PCI sound card and detached the cable going from it to the front headphone jack unit.

Now, when I restarted the PC Windows didn't detect either a set of headphones being inserted into either the front sockets or the built in back sockets.

One I put the card back in and reattached the cable to the front it all worked fine.

Any ideas what I did wrong or any other steps I need to do to get the "built in" sound bits working ?

Press F2 during boot and get into the BIOS.
Look for onboard audio in the BIOS settings. Chances are it's disabled.
