Looking forward to this to get 2014 off to a start. I've never swam in a 50m pool before- what's the arrangement with passing/being passed midlane?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,075 Mod ✭✭✭✭BTH

Afaik (and remember, I'm completely out of the loop nowadays) this is taking place in the diving pool so it's right beside the door at the back of the centre, in which case it's a 25m pool.

The pool will be in 25m format, hope that doesn't disappoint you (too much). Just think of the extra push-offs :)

It mentions 30 lengths on the event details page.

Edit - yes BTH is correct, it is in the diving pool. Nice wide lanes also, but overtaking only at end of lanes..

Cheers lads- I saw the LC pool on the event poster and thought it'd be that. Guess that's the diving pool in the background ;). No worries though, as you say think of the push-offs :)

Event info speedyj linked above says mid-lane passing is allowed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,682 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

It may be 'allowed' but with swimmers going on 1-2 seconds and swimming on each others toes you won't have opportunity to 'tuck in' following an overtake. The wall is the only point you can reasonably effect an overtake, one swimmer at a time, without causing a riot. It's all down to getting your seed time spot on and enforcing your seed time in your lane - be that heading off first then so be it.

Short course events in the NAC are turbulent to say the least :)

Going to guess no tumbles either Jack?

Going on 1-2 seconds? So PBs for 750m and delusions of OW times :)

    Its a rule ... sadly ... ;)

In order to ensure that pool swims are both safe and fair Section 2.22c within the MoG states that ‘Tumble turning is not allowed and will be penalised with a 10 second time penalty for each offence’. The penalty may be added to results or the Technical Official may just stop the competitor poolside and apply the penalty before transition is reached.

Wow - TI really has it out for swimmers. Maybe we should petition to change the name to Duathlon Ireland.

Making it fair? People that can swim should be stopped from swimming so that those that can swim are not at a disadvantaged........

Tumbles are a danger but drafting on the bike is fine............

    :)

I guess if there are lots of swimmers in the water, and it gets choppy there might even be a call to shorten the swim due to 'conditions'

Im probably not supposed to say that, but hey ....

What happens if the heating isn't turned on in the pool?
Can be a bit nippy in there then. Wetsuits or event cancelled?

Not defending them but if you'd seen the quality of tumble turns some of the newer participants you'd be running (swimming) for cover. Torpedoes coming back at you on the same side they turn, going too deep and surfacing like a sub and stopping dead, scooting under the ropes into other lanes - you really couldn't be surprised any more. The blanket ban tries to cut that sh1te out, but yeah - frustrating.

Kurt, in the two pool swims I've done theres been no issue with overtaking midlane provided u are that much faster and do it relatively quickly

So where does the bike route go?

  • Registered Users Posts: 123 ✭✭speedyj

No bike on this one, this is the aquathlon thread.

    Around the car park.

    No drafting allowed.

I hear there was another date added to the aquathon series..............

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,888 ✭✭✭Dory Dory

Is it aquathon or aquathlon? I'm just surprised there's not a "u" in there somewhere. ;)

As part of the race - 3D are going to run a team event - for a bit of fun/bragging rights;)

Each athlete has the choice to declare for a team at registration ('Arklow Boardsies', 'Boardsies under 5ft' etc).
The fastest 3 times (min team size of 3) will be aggregated from each club / team entered.
Each 3 person team must include at least 1 female athlete. Or do the race entirely in ladies toggs (Ive added that because if some bloke swims/runs in female swim wear ... f*ckit, they deserve the cash if they win).

There is €100 up for grabs for the fastest overall team decided from the results ... for the race saturday and the additional races in the series.

    See you Saturday folks.

Anyone want to form a "Boards" team(s) for this? I'd gladly wear a bikini, but can't get a top large enough to fit.

    How 'bout it?

This was a great race, the inaugural aquathlon from the NAC. Well done to hosts 3DTri , it couldn't have been more organized or smoothly run. Roll on the next one in April!

    Results here.

Very enjoyable, great organisation from 3D, and good local support made for a nice day. Rumour has it we may get swim splits on April 12th if the lap counters can be persuaded to do it!

Well done on a good time, glad you enjoyed in KG. Looked strong heading out on the run. Hopefully the weather will be a bit more pleasant for the next one.
Enjoyable day marshalling, might give it a bash in May myself.
