My daughter has been diagnosed with dyspraxia (on top of a mild learning disability). Its her birthday next week and I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for toys/books?

I will be meeting with her OT and SLT but was looking for any advice from parents who have similar experiences with dyspraxia.

    Many thanks.

http://thinkingtoys.ie/ have lots of great ideas. What age is she?
Horse riding has helped some children with dyspraxia, would you consider taking her for a short lesson somewhere?

She's only 6. I dont think she would get on a horse/pony, she wont even get on her bike. She's only just start going down a slide. She's very cautious. I have enrolled her in yoga for kids with special needs :)

I googled toys for kids with dyspraxia.

    This site might help http://www.learningspaceni.co.uk/shop/educational-need/dyspraxia/

EDIT: That just happened to be the first site in the list, but there are loads of websites.

Never seen them before. She was only diagnosed with dyspraxia last week so this is all new to me. They would be great for her balance. Thanks.

Out if curiosity, can I ask hiw did they diagnose her?

About 15 - 20 years ago, when i was about 12, my mother thought I might have had dyspraxia, went to the doctor and he arranged for me to see a specialist.

The specialist was useless, he made me run up and down the surgery and then checked my reflexes and wanted to do cat scan on me followed by brain surgery.

My mam didn't let him to the car scan or the brain surgery because I wasn't that bad.

So I was never diagnosed with dyspraxia, but I also want told I didn't have it.

What was the process for your daughter?

She's been in OT and SLT since she was 3. So with ongoing assessments and reports (and various reports from psychologists and specialists) led to the diagnosis. She was a late walker, speech was pretty delayed. Cant hop, cant catch, late runner. Bad co-ordination and balance etc.

Her speech is not great. Never knew which hand to write with but now has a "working" hand which is her right. Has problems dressing/undressing and following routines.

    Hope that helps.

I have indeed. Am already getting involved with a dyspraxia group for activities. Its hard to get her involved because some clubs have refused her because of her disability, not out of badness, just because they dont have the staff to give her the 1-1 she would need.
