Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    I've a few of each.

Great stuff regarding the slim fit- that's what I go for and that price is decent

Also, I posted this elsewhere, but got zero response, so maybe the good gentlemen here will be able to help! :)

I've scoured M&S, Debenhams, Arnotts, Brown Thomas, ebay, gumtree, and lots of other places and I'm really drawing a blank here.

I'm looking to get my hands on a knee-length trench coat or an overcoat. Colour is not important, but either black or navy would be preferred, but again not essential. If anyone here has ever watched The X-Files, similar to the ones Deep Throat or Mulder wore during the first season is kind of what I'm after.

Any of the sites or shops I've been in, the coats cut off around mid-thigh/above the knee. I want one that goes a bit longer, to below the knee.

Many thanks if anyone knows of either a website or a bricks and mortar store (preferably in and around Dublin) where I could find one.

    Thanks in advance.

Most of the high street stores only stock to the knee because that's where the trend has been for some time.

Your best bet would be to go to a specialist mens clothing store. Not sure about your budget but Louis Copeland would be worth a trip. He seems to have a few 3/4 length macs in store, like this

Thanks for that! While Burberry was well outside my price range, I think that I may have to give Louis a visit in the near future! :)

Can't see the collar, but it looks like a grandad top, though if theres a collar I guess its a long sleeve polo top ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 54 ✭✭TwoGuysDublin

Noob so can't post links but Google image "Mikky Ekko Stay" and scroll down a bit and you should see a picture of him looking into a mirror which shows the exact style. It's not a polo.

Looks like a Henley to me. Not the brand, the style. I got a lovely rib waffle off white one in the Levis store on Grafton St that's a staple. Wear it all the time. Pennys do them, H&M too.

They look great one their own or for layering.

Thinking of something like this (sorry pics aren't the greatest)

    number 4 in 5-2 or number 2 in 1-1.

It might shock some people here but I already have a khaki suit:D
How brown is brown? Is it a must or just something for the sake of it?
Not a must. Just kicking around a few ideas. I already have a lighter grey, a charcoal, 2 blacks and my khaki. I have a couple more too but they don't fit so well although I may get one of them tailored.

  • Registered Users Posts: 54 ✭✭TwoGuysDublin

Depends on how you look and the fabric I guess. Conventionally an "older" colour but can look powerful with the right shirt and tie combination. I've the face of youth and the peppered grey of old, so wouldn't work with me.

What shirts you prefer with brown? Also, intentionally avoiding the khaki elephant in the room!

I normally just pick up work shirts in Dunnes.

Have found them ok. But need to spruce up a tad at work, so want to pick up a few decent shirts to be worn with trousers and suits. Need some ties as well.

Don't want any slim-fit shirts, and don't want to spend an arm and a leg either. Where do ye buy your shirts and ties?

If it's actual brown (rather than just some kind of vomit-ey yellow gone wrong), then with a white shirt and black tie it would look very good.

Completely inappropriate in a professional environment or at formal/evening events though. So unless you need one for just hanging around on the weekend then probably not worth the investment.

Example of how the colours work:

First time posting here and I'm looking for some guidance.
I find it hard to get trousers that fit right, I'm 5'9 with short legs and and thick muscly thighs and when I get trousers they tend to be baggy around my lower leg and/or bulk up around the age making my legs look shorter.

Any ideas on how to find trousers that fit properly?

Take them to an alterations place rather than looking for the perfect fitting pair of trousers.

Your wording isn't clear but it sounds like you need to have the lower legs tapered and shortened slightly.

Should be an easy job for any decent alterations place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

The problem with 'thick muscly thighs' is that generally you have to get a larger waist, which will make the trousers look baggy around the arse.

Its not an easy fix as suggested above, unless im reading it wrong (somewhat jarred), you'll need to get the larger waist for the trousers to fit the thighs, but then get a decent tailor to take the waist in.

The waist and leg can always be altered so buy a trouser that fits the hip and thigh - rule of thumb.

    Thanks for the help,
So I should get it to fit my tigh and get the waist and lower leg tapered then taken up.

Oh and apologies for how badly put together my first post was.

Yeah pretty much so. You cant alter the size around the thigh.
Walk into a tailor or alterations place and just have a chat with em and see what they can do.
Prob wont be cheap mind you but for one or 3 pairs of slacks you'll get wear out of it'll be worth it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 920 ✭✭✭Bored_lad

As above get a pair that fits you around you thighs and then have the tailor take them in at the waist and then taper the leg and they should fit perfectly. This kind of work should be no problem for a proper tailor but I'd stay away from somewhere like zipyard as they can often mess up the easiest things.

I used the personal shopping service in Arnotts recently. Found it very good, mind you, I don't have much of a clue of fashion. Kept the colours fairly neutral (i.e. non-dazzling/radical!), which I prefer. A few shirts, tops and some jeans. There was definitely a bit of sales tactics involved, of course. Heavy on the wallet. I said no to a few things...the blazer was very tempting, though it was over €300.

It's it possible to get a tailor to make a leg fit slimmer? I have suit trousers where the Waist is perfect but I'd prefer them to fit slimmer.

    Heavy on the wallet.

Tbh in my experience it's worth the extra outlay. I'll always go to a high end department store when I'm buying a new pair of jeans.

The guys who work there are experts and not overly pushy. You tell them your measurements and preferences and they pick out an excellent selection. If thereafter you require some additional tailoring they are happy to oblige.

The waist/length measurements in high street stores these days are baffling.

If your local zipyard are doing good work for you then I'd advise you stay with them. They might be a perfectly good tailor but I know my local one (their franchises) can't perform some simple tasks properly and even I'd they do the quality is very hit and miss. This is only in my local zipyard and could be completely different in other zipyards.

Not sure if this is appropriate for here.

I'm considering letting my hair grow a bit longer. I've always been a firm advocate of the "short-back-and-sides" and keeping my hair fairly short since I was about 18 (before that, it was always in a longer, "rocker" style).

I don't want to go back to the complete rocker look, but I want it to be a bit longer.

So, in order to avoid it looking untidy and stringy and all that, what is the best product to use in my hair to keep it styled and neat in the interim? And when it has reached a suitable length, is it OK to go into a barber and just ask for a quick, "tidy-up" or would that just piss them off?

This would be the length/look I would be aiming for (Barry Pepper in 25th Hour. Best approximation I could think of)

    26409-30305.jpg

Maybe I'm trying to recapture my youth a bit, maybe I'm just looking for something new.

What are your thoughts, lads gentlemen?

What I'd say to you (and every other man here) is to stop using shampoo. You can wash your hair with just water (it won't smell) and your hair will retain enough natural oil to allow you to shape and style it. Your hair will be greasy for a week or two until your scalp produces just enough oil. And your hair will look better and feel softer.

And yeah just go in and ask for a trim, no hassle.

    This is nonsense.

Maybe it works for you, but I can guarantee you that 2 weeks of not using shampoo will NOT allow me to shape and style my hair.

I needed some hair product and I usually use v05 matte clay but as I strolled through Tesco I saw some of the new Lynx black range on special offer. I picked up the matte clay to give it a try and it's almost as good as the v05, but the initial whiff off it kind of turns my stomach. I haven't bought Lynx in around 15 years and probably wont be buying it again any time soon.

I'll tell you why you bought it - packaging - fair dues to Lynx they've made that new line of hair product look really good, spotted it in Tesco but decided against it, I'm a Dapper Dan man after all :pac:

I'll try that. I got some clay a few years back in a hair dressers and it was great, with a nice smell but they changed the formula and it and it wasn't worth it any more.

It's good. Easy to style, doesn't make hair greasy or go hard. It also doesn't smell.

Op that will be perfectly fine and best of look with growing it out as it can take a while.

On not washing your hair at all this just doesn't work for most people. I'd advise you cut down to washing every few days and make sure you condition. You could try co washing if you wanted but it doesn't work for some people. I'd also advise you try to use a shampoo without SLS or try to use one with sodium Lauryth sulfate.

Now for products to use there are some great haircare brands out there at the moment. Some of the ones I'd recommend would be Hanz de Fuko, By Vilain, Mr Pompadour, VO5, Fudge and also some products from other brands if your looking for specific product recommendations just ask.

As for can you ask a barber for a tidy up yes you can no problem that's what most people do. Be warned however that most barbers will charge you full prices unless you develop a relationship with them and are coming in regularly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 936 ✭✭✭JaseBelleVie

    Sound for the advice, lads.

And no offence to anyone intended, but there's no way in hell I'm not washing my hair.

But everything else is all good.

I will probably be back here in a month having gotten sick of higher maintenance and have gotten the trusty "short back and sides" back again. :o

Before Christmas I decided to wear all clothes bar jocks and socks only once. Once they entered the wash and came out they went in the spare room. I am down to last four or five of each item unworn but when I move I know exactly which items will be going to charity shop.
