Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Have to agree, the first one is stylish, but the 2nd one I would not touch.

The first coat looks to be either a 6 x 3 Ulster Overcoat (without cape) or a Polo Overcoat.
A quick google should get you on your way.

The second one is a Trenchcoat , I'd imagine most mid to high end stores would stock a version of it.

Arnotts has already been mentioned. M&S & Debehhams might also be worth a look.

Actually Slattsy mentioned Kildare Village.... Brooks Brothers are there and they should have something. I wouldn't think for €200 though :-(

If any lads are vertically challenged but carrying a bit of bulk like myself I find Burton in the Jervis Centre (Dublin) to be very good for jeans. Pricey but absolutely worth it, as often I find in most chains I'm falling "in between" sizes.

Gents, anyone know where to get cheap Espadrilles? Would like a pair of Toms but at their prices and the nature of Irish weather and slippers I think a cheap alternative may suffice! Many thanks!

H&M may still have some of these in stock but then again its coming into Autumn, might be worth checking out. I think penneys often stock them as well, but again seasonal. Though a bit more expensive Toms are of more comfort and quality. You can pick up a pair for around 30.

Why don't Tommy Hilfiger do short length jeans. They would make a fortune from me!

why can't they be normal and do a 30" leg?

You all do know you can just take the jeans to an alterations place and have them shortened right?

    Lads

    I'm a 15.5 chest size in a shirt and a 42 in a jacket. I like to wear slim/tight fitting shirts and 15.5 always works a treat.

However, no matter where I buy my shirts, it's still the same - perfect fitting around the chest but the sleeves are too short. I really like the look of the shirt sleeve appearing slightly out of the jacket sleeve, especailly with suit jackets, but any time I wear a blazer, the shirt sleeve disappears as it's too short.

    HELP!

For that shirt size, I'm surpirsed you're not just a 40 jacket. I'm a 16 shirt size and wear 40L jackets as 42 would just be too big on me. I have long arms and find Zara alwasy do extra long arm shirts so try there.

This is probably a very odd thread but it's been bothering me for some time now. Basically all the socks I buy seem to end up having holes in them or wearing out or having those little bally bits on them within a few weeks of purchase.

I'd usually shop in Primark (living in the UK now so no Penny's for me :)) but their quality of socks is pretty dire if cheap. I've also tried Next and Burton but also both pretty rubbish and more expensive.

Anyway, any recommendations for shops or websites (either or) selling good quality socks that will last for a while rather than having to buy new pairs every couple of months or so.

I swear, I'll get banned for shilling for Marks & Spencer some day because of how I'm always putting their name forward, but here I go again.

You seriously cannot go wrong with Marks and Sparks for all forms of underwear, not just socks; but boxers and t-shirts too. Their stuff might be a little more expensive, but it lasts way longer. Their socks don't get holes in them as quick as others, nor do they tend to get those little balls of fluffy stuff either. They also do online shopping which is really good and easy to use.

EDIT: Please note, mods; I do not, have not, nor will I ever work(ed) for Marks & Spencer, nor am I shareholder or stockholder, nor do my dreams and goals match those of Marks & Spencer, its subsidiaries or shareholders/stockholders...

I second this. Can't go wrong with M&S.

These are your man for long term wear; http://www.bigmenslargeclothes.co.uk/commando-outdoor-socks-black?cPath=40& Warm and tastefully in monochrome.

I am not sure if they are the same brand or not but I got a number of pairs of those commando socks from a local camping store and I find them great, they are really comfortable and seem to last forever.

Never mind Grafton Street sell them but you have to ask staff to get them for you or there are all sizes available upstairs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,255 ✭✭✭tommy2bad

Their the same ones, I'v only bought the outdoor ones so cant comment on the shoe socks, I imagine their as good. Expencive though. Much handier to get the Pennies ones and bin em after a couple of wears. They don't stand up to washing well.

I also second M&S for socks. Good quality and cheap, like the other poster said, they're cheap enough to be disposable but the quality is still good enough that you aren't scrapping the barrel.

Are you saying you wear socks once then throw them away?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,012 ✭✭✭uch

I always buy 10 pairs of the same socks, then when I get a hole in a single sock, I throw it out and keep the god one, when I get down to about 4 pairs left I repeat the process. And I always buy Penneys socks, as has been said already, they are about 70cent a pair.

Yep, penny's socks aren't worth the bother of washing. Get decent socks and leave the penny's ones for occasional emergencies.

Has anyone come across a decent work/casual rain jacket with a hood. Alot of them have none and it seems a bit pointless keeping yourself dry and getting your head wet! Its not always possible to carry an umbrella

Not to sound crazy in this post-recession flahulach era or anything, but do any of you guys consider repairing a holey (or unholy!) sock, instead of binning it?

It's just a needle and thread operation, handy to have around anyway for buttons that might pop off, or other small repairs.

By the time a sock developes holes it is usually way past its sell by date anyway so not usually worth the efoort of repairing. I have had the needle and thread out for suit buttons recently though.

I've noticed that the largest size sock in Penney's et al is usually an 11. So if you have larger feet the sock will be stretched and more prone to developing holes.

You can get larger sizes online on specialist sites but I've found that outdoor-shop\work-boot style socks are best. Not sure if they'd look well if you have to wear a suit to work though...
