I've noticed that the largest size sock in Penney's et al is usually an 11. So if you have larger feet the sock will be stretched and more prone to developing holes.

You can get larger sizes online on specialist sites but I've found that outdoor-shop\work-boot style socks are best. Not sure if they'd look well if you have to wear a suit to work though...

Penny's stock larger sizes in sports socks usually size 11-13 as I'm a size 13 myself. So have another look because I can get them in Carlow

I went to the gym before work yesterday. I packed my bag the night before and though I had packed everything. I hadn't...

I forgot to pack dark socks. So, I had to wear my white socks out of the gym and around a shop while I shopped for a new pair at 8 in the morning.

I bought a five pack. I'm going to bring them into work and put them there in case the same thing happens again. Thank God for that shop. Crisis averted.

Right random one by me here.

Flying over to see Hans Zimmer in a concert tomorrow in London.

For those who dont know him hes the guy who scores all the music to the movies and it will be a classical concert as such.

My own question is would this entail wearing a suit? I'd be hoping not to if i could get away with it. Was more thinking along the lines of jeans, tee or shirt and a suit jacket.

I doubt it. I've been to a proper classical concert in the Royal Albert Hall and it was extremely casual.

A shirt and blazer would be perfect.

Looking around online for a no-frills grey pea coat or jacket for winter that won't break the bank. Anyone know of anywhere worth looking in Dublin?

    Well lads,

Bought a navy blue blazer, just wondering the best shirt colour to go for?

Going to wear it with a pair of jeans and either vans or brown boots

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

Navy, you'll always look sharp in a navy blazer.
You'll look even sharper in a white shirt.

you've not many options really. White or a baby blue. A navy shirt could be an option. Personally I never wear darker coloured shirts but it will look good.

Don't do pink or purple anyway.

Will do, was thinking of striped shirts and plain white anyways.

A check navy and white one could be nice.
Not too formal especially if you're going for the vans.

My thoughts on this are if you're going to wear a blazer, shirt and jeans, then wearing vans will let your outfit down.

Wear brown boots and match the belt to the shoes

Where's the best place for a new pair of shoes lads? Looking for a nice brown pair for socializing in. Not too expensive though.

    Anywhere online?

I was recently in Chicago and got myself a pair of these boots

They're 50% off at the moment so you're getting them for $50 - I brought it to the cart just there to see how much shipping to Ireland is and it's showing up as $8 - which is very good value imo

Was thinking something that would go over jumpers etc. so wouldn't be looking for a big North Face type thing. Probably something reasonably light ideally.

H&M do decent jackets for low prices

Quality could be called into question here but I bought a knock around bomber jacket and it's the warmest thing I own, had it two years now and while I wouldn't be wearing it on nights out it works well around winter and for casual wear. On the whole though - for the cost of the jackets in H&M you can't go wrong

    Link here & Another here

Additionally, if you're looking for something lighter than that - picked up something similar to the below jacket in H&M whilst on hols lately, can't see the one I got on their site, maybe it's not in the UK or something

Something I'll be looking at in the next month will be an upgraded winter jacket - have a nice pea coat but could do with something with some length and a good collar

Then to add to that - an umbrella with a wooden handle something like this...

I've only ever used golf umbrellas but it'd be nice to own a gentlemans brolly :)

I'd drop the blazer then. Shirt and tie.

Lads any idea where to get a green wax jacket? Have been looking around in the likes of Debenhams, River Island, Topshop and nothing at all. Don't want to spend £250 on a Barbour one - do I have any alternatives?

    Something like this ---> http://www.lyst.com/clothing/vintage-renewal-wax-jacket-in-green-1/

Contrary to a lot of advice, what you are trying to do might work; It's called "spezzato", an Italian work that literally indicates something that is broken in half. In this case, however, it's used to describe pairing a jacket/blazer and trousers which are not part of the same suit. Different colors are mandatory - and the contrast has to be picked fairly carefully; Ideally, one of the two element should be of a fair, neutral colour (gray, cream, sand) and the other dark.

An example of "spezzato" would be this:
    diverso-uomo-3.jpg

It is normally considered adequate for a wedding (add a tie).

Not sure about the colours you have in your wardrobe; Best course of action - do a fitting test and check how it looks.

Thanks for that suggestion, thats exactly what i was thinking of.
But i'm a big chap and i wasn't sure id pull it off for the day.

Only one way to find out i suppose.. Might even post a picture to get opinion

Italians can get away with an awful lot more than your average Irish person.

IMHO only in fashion myth Jimmy. I've been around Italy back in the say and have even attended an Italian wedding and yes their fashion sense and awareness is higher than the average Irish affair, but the underlying "raw material" of the folks themselves is not so different. Irish guys can even have the general advantage of height. So the spezzato look that H suggests could work pretty well IMH. Though I would reckon personally that said look works better the skinnier you are. It can look odd on the chunkier guys among us. A suit is a far better bet there, again just in my humble.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

what about the others at the wedding are you considering them.
will they know you've shown up in the spezzato look and deem you quite fashionable or will they think you're some clown who's not got a proper suit
