Hi all. Just got notification from my current broadband supplier that my bill is about to go up in price. Was considering moving to sky to get the tv -phone- broadband deal. Anyone here have any experience with them in Clare. Specifically the Newmarket on fergus/Shannon area? Thanks in advance

I rang them earlier to inquire. I don't have a land line so the girl said she would get their specialist switch team to call me instead. Still waiting. ..... noticed the other threads on boards about them. Slow speeds in the evening apparently.....

You're going to need a landline. Sky are just reselling Eircom's broadband, the way Vodafone and others are, but they don't seem to be offering the much faster Fibre speeds. It isn't a satellite service.

Can you be a bit more specific about your location? Broadband speeds vary massively geographically and you're talking different exchanges etc

I am in East Clare and has no issues re broadband speed with Sky.

we have been with eircom and o2 for broadband using the landline, we kepted on having to boot up the box all the time as we kepted on loosing signal. We are with sky and have a booster and to date has not lost signal. Have no issues with speed.

They definitely have improved their customer service. Had problems with tv at home and answered phone very quickly, didn't even ring.

For Sky it is delivered through a landline, yes.

But Sky have their own network. Just like Vodafone do. They use BT's equipment if they're in the local exchange, and where BT have no presence they use Eircom's. Smart/Digiweb also have their own equipment in exchanges.

Sky are not technically reselling Eircom. They buy bandwidth and have their own network and ips, so to say they resell Eircom would be false. They do use their network alright, but broadband and voice services are routed through Sky's network, using Eircom's lines and telephone exchanges. Eircom would be responsible for any faults that would arise, and cannot give their customers priority over another provider's customers. The company is split into Eircom Retail and Eircom Wholesale which in itself it pretty self explanatory.

It's not like a "white-label product" as such.

One thing to consider for tech minded people is that you cannot change the DNS servers on the router Sky give you.

I am between Newmarket and Shannon. Close to the old main road to limerick in an area called Drumline. My parents have regular eircom next door to me but they rarely use their internet so their info wouldn't be overly reliable. My wife uses it for web browsing, rte player youtube etc. I use it for online gaming mainly.

just signed up to SKY BB & Phone. getting 4mb line speed for county galway - is this good?
also when rang last week was offered €20 for first 6 months and €40 after. today was told they could not do this price as Im not on urban exchange and had to factor in line rental etc.. the usual speel! I complained this wasnt mentioned last week when offer was made (id rang originally to cancel Sky sports, never asked about BB til they mentioned it). anyways new price was 25 per month 6 mths and 50 thereafter. more moaning from me about how they shold honor original offer and in the end he added offer to TV of €5 off multiroom so it evened it out a bit so I went ahead and signed up.

Very much a "how long is a piece of string" question! If you're living a km, or two, outside a small town then that's probably OK. If you're slap bang in the middle of a town, then that's not great (but not too bad either). It's down to how far you are from your telephone exchange.

Well it depends where exactly in Galway. 4Mb was considered average pre fibre so I would say it's extremely poor now. I live in Ennis town and my Eircom fibre runs at just under 35Mb. I used to get just over 7 from the previous generation. I also heard that their speeds were a bit on the slow side.

Just configure the client to static ip if you want to use a different DNS Server

We went back to Sky in December after disastrous experiences with UPC Horizon and we're very happy with it. We needed a new phone line put in and they arranged for an Eircom engineer to come out and do that. We can't fault it.
