Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Titi Camara. Titty Camera.

    Mustafa Gudboning.

Reminds me of Umtiti. Ummm titee..

Things were better in 80s/90s when the Germans had Stefan Kuntz
and the Dutch had Jan de Kock.

AFAIK there have been players named Fanni, F uc ks, Minge, Dicks, Gash and Muff.

Also spare a a though for former French Rugby player from 80s
    Jean Condom.

As the banner read "He could never hold our Willy".

I think Brighton's defence of Duffy, Dunk and Bong is pleasing to say.

Faryd Mondragón - Colombian goalkeeper, until recently you could have heard his wonderful name as the record for oldest keeper ever at the world cup, but it hsa since been broken.

Full name is Faryd Camilo Mondragón Alí.

Who broke Mondragon's record? Think it will be broken this summer with the Egyptian goalie though

Saw a good one recently that I liked - Pontus Wernbloom.

    Geoffrey Kongdogbia.

It’s not just the surname, but the juxtaposition with the mundane Christian name...

I forgot Ciro Immobile (Ih- mow-bee-lay)

He lives up to his name. Absolutely useless

27 goals and 9 assists in 30 league games for Lazio this season. 8 in the Europa as well.

Maybe I was harsh on Immobile.

His stats are very good this year.

He had a big chance to shine against Ireland vs Italy in Euro 2016. On the night, he looked cumbersome and not an international-standard player.

    It's still a great name.

Roberto Firmino Barbosa de Oliveira, which should be said with the gravelly voice of a Junta general (15 perfectly spaced vowels!)

Pronouncing names will never be same since the Memory Man shuffled off to the great commentary box in the sky. Jimmy loved to roll 'r's and throw in a few superfluous 'h's or draw out his vowels. Generally players only get called by a second name but, for a special few, Jimmy loved to give them the full treatment:

Marrrhadonna (living legend but only gets the superfluous 'h' and a few extra 'r's.
Horst Hruebesch, the man they called the Monster. (try getting that in when Horst is scoring a header off a corner).
Jorge Buuuurrachaga (pronounced like Jimmy was throwing up last nights burrito).
Jaime Pacheco (Hymeeee Pashayco - could never understand Jimmy's fascination with this Portuguese player but he always got the full Magee).

But the daddy of them all had to be 1986 World Cup winner Joooolio Jorrrhgééé Olarticoechea. Whenever he passed the ball to Burrachaga, that was Jimmy's commentary done for that half. He was never ever just plain Olarticoechea, surely the greatest name ever.

Oops, sorry, thought it had already been broken - yeah, that Egyptian keeper might do it.

Julio Olarticoechea is a great name too.

What I've sometimes wondered is - do Spanish or Italian fans (or wherever) think Anglo names are as cool as we think their names are?

Is there a thread somewhere with fans from those countries saying they love the cool names of footballers like Danny Drinkwater and Kevin Moran?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,697 ✭✭✭DickSwiveller

My brother worked with Italian students a few years ago and had a great laugh listening to them trying to pronounce Irish players who played in Italy. Two of the examples I remember are Lime Brady (Liam Brady) and Roby Ken (Robbie Keane).

Brek Shea sounds pretty American you guys.

My favourites would be Arriaga, Arriaga II, Barriaga, Aruglia and Pizzouza.

You can add our new coach to your list as well. Christian Titz.

He also looks like Ricky Gervais.
