Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Your all time World 11?

After reading the "your world 11" thread and the debate on Ronaldo and Messi being the best of all time got me thinking what would the all time 11 be.

    Here's mine

    Olive Khan

Paolo Maldini---Tony Adams--- Marcel Desailly---Lilian Thuram

    Patrick Vieira---Bastian Schweinsteiger

    --Messi
    Zinedine Zidane
    Christiano Ronaldo

    Ronaldo

Subs Ronadlinho, Thiery Henry, Clarence Seedorf, Lizarzu, Fabio Cannavaro, Peter Schmeichel and Figo.

Now I know I left out a lot the likes of Maradona, Pele etc but I decided to go with players I have seen on a regular basis not just seen clips of etc. along with maybe a bit of an Arsenal bias :o.

Bastian Schweinsteiger over the likes of Makelele, Xavi and Busquets is a big big call.

(This is just restricting it to people I've seen)

And there are too many far more accomplished CBs to include Tony Adams IMO.

No point in picking players like Pele or Best who I've never seen play so here is my world eleven from when I started watching football.

    Kahn
    Cafu----McGrath
    Cannavaro
    Maldini
    Figo
    Mattaus
    Zidane
    C.Ronaldo
    Ronaldo--- Messi

    Buffon

    Cafu
    Thuram
    Cannavaro
    Maldini

    Makelele
    Xavi
    Zidane

    C. Ronaldo
    Ronaldo
    Messi

    Casillas
    Maldini Desailly Cannavaro Cafu
    Busquets Viera
    Zidane
    Messi Ibrahimovic C. Ronaldo

Ibrahimovic vs Ronaldo is a tough call. Lahm deserves a spot too.

Casillas vs Khan vs Buffon is a pretty tough call too.

Obviously it's quite biased towards recent years, but then I've only been watching football a lot since about 2001.

Yea I get ya I just felt Schweinsteiger offers the team more of a balance than say Makelele, Xavi or Busquets would although all terrific players. Although I think looking at it Xavi or Iniesta would at least deserve a spot on the bench.

Tony Adams I do think was a brilliant best CB I have seen really was a rock and did admit to maybe a small bit of Arsenal bias in that one.

    Buffon;
    Cafu, Baresi, Maldini, Zanetti;
    Rijkaard, Pirlo;
    Zidane, Maradona;
    van Basten, Ronaldo(brazil)

Doubt it'd work but damn this was hard to do. That back 5 will Never change for me but the midfield was hard to pick.

I'm eschewing some all-time greats (Yashin, Best, Pele, Beckenbauer, etc.) in favour of players whom I've seen play and who have just been definitively brilliant from my "career" of watching football.

    Casillas

    Cafu
    Maldini
    Cannavaro
    Roberto Carlos

    Makelele
    Xavi
    Zidane

    C. Ronaldo
    Messi
    Ronaldo

Honourable mentions: Kahn, Cech, Buffon, Carvalho, Ferdinand, Vidic, Terry, Cole, Iniesta, Pirlo, Ballack, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Shevchenko, Drogba, van Nistelrooy, Shearer, Nedved, Beckham, Zola, Bergkamp, Henry, Owen, Weah, Gerrard, Lampard, Baggio, Van Basten, Van Bronkhoorst, Schweinsteiger, Lahm, Neuer, Ibrahimovic, Alaba, Hazard, Aguero, Figo, McManaman, Del Piero, Vieri, Inzaghi, Rivaldo, Dunga, Neymar, Thuram, Trezeguet, Gattuso, Deco, Crespo, Batistuta, Carragher, Fowler, Alonso, Roy Keane, Larsson, Eto'o, Fabregas...... I better stop now.... :o

    Buffon

    Cafu
    Nesta
    Maldini
    Roberto Carlos

    Roy Keane
    Pirlo

    C Ronaldo
    Zidane
    Ronaldinho

    Ronaldo

So clearly Im too young to include players like Van Basten, Cryuff, Pele etc so went with players Im familiar with

I can never take part in these kind of threads. It would take me the rest of the day to argue with myself and settle on a team and as soon as I posted it I'd want to change it :pac:

4-2-3-1 job,I think I have a solid enough defence, with a back four all comfortable on the ball, with Keano and Matthaus providing enough cover so the lads ahead of them can do their thing.

    Schmiechal

    Irwin Baresi McGrath Maldini

    Matthaus Keane

    Messi Maradona C Ronaldo

    Van Basten

Wow great side. Kahn and McGrath instead of Nesta and Buffon for me...maybe Messi ahead of Ronaldinho

    This is very tough

Apart from my own ;) , this is my favorite so far. Plenty of steel in midfield but footballers too. Anybody that doesn't have Matthaus is their side must be under 30. Amazing player.

Remember him alright but never got see him play on a regular basis so hard to pass judgement.

Much like Maradona my only real memory of him is the 94 World Cup when he got turfed out and the controversy that surrounded it.

Should just change the thread to best 11 I've seen if you're going to not include players you haven't seen. Not really an all time world 11 otherwise.

    Here's mine, all time

    Yashin

    Cafu
    Beckenbauer
    Baresi
    Maldini

    Neeskens
    Zidane

    Garrincha
    Maradona
    Cruyff

    Pele

    Best I've seen is

    Schmeichel

    Cafu
    Cannavaro
    Nesta
    Maldini

    Keane
    Scholes

    Ronaldo
    Zidane
    Messi

    Ronaldo

These things really tear me apart and up until recently my team would be a lot different but now Messi and Ronaldo would both make my all-time team and its so hard to leave out Zidane, Ronaldo and Pele but you can't pick everybody and this is what I'd go with.
I just think with a Matthaus sitting in front of that back four that you don't need anymore help and the front four are the best I've seen and I couldn't leave out any of them I don't think.

    Dasayev
    Cafu
    Baresi
    McGrath
    Maldini
    Matthaus
    Maradona
    Best
    Messi
    C.Ronaldo

Just posting on what I've seen..28 here

    Great dame
    Cafu
    Stam
    Thuram
    Maldini

    Keane/Zidane

    Messi CR7 Ronaldinho

    Henry

    Schmeichel

    McGrath - Matthaus - Maldini

    Cruyff(c)

    C. Ronaldo - Zidane - Maradona - Messi

    Pele - Gerd Muller

I know it's a ridiculous line up but I had to get them all in.
Cruyff the total footballer as captain orchestrating all that talent in front of him.

Makelele is a laughable inclusion in my view.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,469 ✭✭✭✭GTR63

    They didn't play in Italy...

No still think Maradona is better than Messi & the two forwards I picked are the best no.9's in the last 25 years imo. Easier to judge a player when they have retired too.
Are you going to bother doing one or just moan about others?

    Kahn

    Cafu
    Nesta
    Maldini
    Roberto Carlos

    Xavi
    Zidane

    Messi
    Ronaldinho
    Cristiano Ronaldo

    Ronaldo

Playing Zidane alongside Xavi might not be ideal but I couldn't leave out 1 of Zidane/Messi/C.Ronaldo/Ronaldinho, incredibly hard for me to choose who was the best I have ever seen when they were all at their best.

    Surprised this hasnt happened yet

    GK - Given
    RB - Irwin
    CB - McGrath
    CB - Dunne
    LB - Coleman
    RM - Duff
    CM - Brady
    CM - Keane, Roy
    LM - Kilbane
    CF - Keane, Robbie
    CF - Aldridge

Duff on the right because no Irish team would be complete without Zinedine Kilbane :)

This team could compete with any of the teams listed imo!

One player I wanted to include but Van Basten just got ahead of him was Careca that man was some finisher back in the day.

Ah don't be so serious man, it wasn't meant as a moan or a dig. I've already said I can't pick one, I'm far too indecisive for these threads, I'd be only wrecking my own head.
