internal monitor only working in safe mode

    Hi all,

This week my laptop stopped displaying on the internal screen.
It shows the windows logo on start up and works in safe mode correctly, this tells me the hardware is OK.
It is defaulting to an external Dell monitor on the VGA port even when the monitor is disconnected from the port.
In the display settings it wont recognise the internal monitor as connected and wont allow me select "make this my main monitor".

Have tried system restore and rolling back recent update to no avail.
It also appears there is no updated graphics driver available.

    Any help would be great.
    thanks
