Soundbar question

I'm thinking of replacing an existing 5.1 setup of amp & speakers/sub with a sound bar which will replicate the soundstage.

I have UPC (non horizon - connects to TV with scart), a mac mini & apple TV (don't ask about the duplication) as sources.

If needs be, I can possibly drop the mac mini & just go with the other two devices, but how do I go about connecting them ?

Any recommendations for a sound bar that gives a reasonable soundstage, extra subwoofer is no problem.

    Thanks.

you wont get the same sound on a soundbar as from a 5-1,usually amp can take all that is needed,if removing all that your soundbar would need loads of inputs for adding,my old yamaha takes optical and digital cables but no hdmi,i then use from tv my spdif to spdif input on soundbar any thing i view on screen is played on soundbar.

I agree with the above and would suggest ditching 5.1 and getting a decent 2.0 setup.

What about the ones that replicate surround ?

5.1 downmixed to stereo is much better than psuedo 5.1.

The psuedo 5.1 from sound bars rely heavily on room placement and acoustics. Even then, the result is really 5.1 in a very limited seating position.
