Abortion in Ewes

Started farming last year. I bought a batch of 20 ewes in October. Two bought in ewes aborted today, not due for a month. I have separated the bought in and my own ewes in separate fields and 2 aborted ones are in the shed. Both sets are vaccinated against toxoplasmosis, the area is plagued with fecking cats.

Vet took samples today, he didn't know much about abortion in ewes, more of a small animal vet, other vet away on holidays. My question is if it is enzootic abortion, should my own ewes not have got it first as they have no immunity/vaccination against it as the other ewes would have some immunity from it. All 20 are first time lambers.

Our local lab usually identifies toxo in 48hrs whereas enzo can take six weeks.
Once I have identified that it's not toxo, I have used alamycin LA with good results on the rest of the ewes..... even if its not enzo, alamycin helps with lameness also
I'm not a vet, so this is not advice, but it is something to discuss with your vet

Grand thanks so much, will be near the vets later on today. Will that help with enzootic in anyway or is it just to stop other pathogens that cause abortions

Yes ,it helps with the enzootic.
When the ewes get infected, I think it restricts the blood going to the lamb and kills the lamb gradually, alamycin kills the infection and saves the lamb.
I always think alamycin is worth the gamble if its not toxo
Lab should know by now if its toxo, if it is toxo there's nothing you can do.
Takes ages to get enzo confirmed.

Yeah got results from lab. Turns out it was toxoplasmosis after all. Only two aborted, moved the rest of them. Better be more careful with vaccination, next time. Just so glad it wasn't a full scale abortion storm

    Thanks

Just proves you were right to vaccinate, nothing as disheartening as abortion
