"UK broadcaster and comedian Jonathan Ross has stepped down as the host of the Hugo sci-fi Awards following a hate campaign by sci-fi fans on Twitter." - link.
I was not aware of such a general enmity to Mr. Ross within sections of the Sci-Fan community.

He wasn't hosting the convention, which is the world scifi convention, he was to host just the hugo awards.
Most of the USA parts of fandom would not know of him and would have googled him and found a series of sensational remarks, which caused a twitter storm.

It was announced via twitter which was stupid, those organizing loncon3/world scifi con should have done the announcement with a blog/article on their site, stating why he had been asked and his credentials.
They seem to have blundered badly imo.

His credentials for hosting an award show? I don't think the organizers did anything wrong. If anything these fans with their own sense of self importance let themselves down.

Yes, as loncon3 is the worldcon for this year, world con is a scifi con which moves country every year.
So there would be plenty of people who had no idea who he is.

They could have used Google rather than outraged twitter messages.

There is plenty of sensational stuff there if you do use google.
There should have been imo a statement announcing him rather then just a tweet.

I don't see a difference. The outraged keyboard warriors didn't do themselves any favour.

A tweet can be a statement. It's not about the media chosen to make the statement, but the witch hunt that seems quite ironic in hindsight. The victim becomes the bully.
