With 8 of the McCarthy Cup teams playing and the Rinc/Rackard/Meagher cup finals on over the next 36 hours I'll give a quick preview.

    LEINSTER SHC

    DUBLIN (5) -V- GALWAY (7)
Both teams showed brief glimpses of their best in a somewhat disappointing draw last weekend, which side has learned more from that game however?
Result based on current rating; Dublin by 3
Tough one to call, these are probably the two most inconsistent teams in the country; they can both beat anyone on their day and they can both be awful. I tipped Dublin last weekend and I'll stick with that.

    LAOIS (11) -V- OFFALY (10)
Big opportunity for Laois who have responded well to a disappointing qualifier group defeat to Antrim, hard to know how things are in that panel after the recent Cheddar Plunkett debacle, not much noise from the Offaly camp. Good opportunity from both teams, the winners face Dublin or Galway, neither of whom were overly impressive last weekend.
Result based on current rating; Offaly by 1
I'm going to disagree with this, Laois were in a terrible position a few years back and have made steady progress since, home advantage could swing this one for them.

    WESTMEATH (12) -V- WEXFORD (9)
But for their defeat to Kerry in the 2A league final Westmeath have had an excellent year but Wexford are a massive step above anything they have faced thus far. Hard to see it being anything other than a question of how much Wexford will win by.
Result based on current rating; Wexford by 9
Westmeath will hope to catch Wexford cold but it would be a brave man that would bet against Wexford here.

    MUNSTER SHC

    WATERFORD (3) -V- CORK (4)
Waterford have been the team of 2015 so far but both counties preparations have been disrupted somewhat by injuries. Some may feel that the league final was merely shadow boxing but I find it difficult to fathom that a team would give anything other than 100% in a national final. This Waterford team are on the road to becoming a serious contender. I'm sure some in Waterford would take issue with that opinion and state that they already are, and to be fair, maybe they would be right.
Result based on current rating; DRAW
Points gap is very small. I'm leaning towards Cork myself, great days lay ahead for this Waterford team in the years ahead but they have suffered more on the injury front than Cork.

    RING CUP FINAL

    DERRY (17) -V- KERRY (12)
Kerry's long journey towards the McCarthy Cup could finally be fulfilled today and it would be great to add this to division 1 hurling next year. Their victory over Kildare made a big statement, Derry however seem to enter the final without the "burdens" of expectation and pressure. Ring Cup finals don't always go the way of the favourite (as Kerry know all too well)
Result based on current rating; Kerry by 8
I'd support this, I believe it would be a first for a team (Derry) to overcome such a wide points gap in a national final. Based on current gaps, a Derry win would be the equivalent of Wexford defeating Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final.

    RACKARD CUP FINAL

    ARMAGH (22) -V- ROSCOMMON (24)
Oddly, this will be a curtain raiser for the Meagher Cup final. Armagh are seeking their third Rackard Cup final, as they appear to be set to continue their trend of being too good for Rackard cup and not good enough for the Ring cup. Roscommon actually defeated Armagh in the 2007 final but I don't expect a repeat of that today.
Result based on current rating; Armagh by 5

    MEAGHER CUP FINAL

    FERMANAGH (31) -V- SLIGO (32)
Fermanagh started the competition very strongly but Sligo have put a slow start (and an awful league campaign) well and truly behind them winning their last two games by a combined total of 36 points, including a 5 goal and 4 point thrashing of Fermanagh last weekend.
Result based on current rating; Fermanagh by 2
This would be some turnaround in the space of a week, Fermanagh had already qualified for the final before last weekends game so unlike Sligo there was nothing on the line for them, and they did field a weakened team. I suspect they'll have enough to emerge victorious here. Keep an eye out for their jerseys on which there will be a tribute to their teammate Shane Mulholland who sadly died in a car accident earlier this year.

Galway claim 5th place from Dublin following the game between the two while Waterford are now closer to Kilkenny and Tipperary than they are to the chasing pack. Disappointingly, Laois are still behind Offaly but the gap is now much closer.

Kerry should finish in 12th following their successful Ring Cup campaign, although any win for Westmeath in their next qualifier game would see them move to 12th.

Fermanagh and Sligo both gain and lose a place respectively following the Meagher Cup final while Roscommon caused a bit of a surprise by defeating Armagh in the Rackard Cup final.

Looking back at the start of the season Waterford were barely ahead of Wexford and most people expect us to be overtaken by them. Now we're between the chasing pack and the top two. Just goes to show how quickly things can change.

8 wins and 1 draw is a very impressive run that they are on. It's great that the rankings have reflected this by having them behind Tipp & KK, and ahead of the rest.

No McCarthy Cup action this week but the "minor" competitions reach their conclusion this weekend meaning all bar 12 counties won't hurl for another 8 months after this weekend. Kerry sealed the Ring cup but their counterparts who won the Rackard and Meagher cups haven't been extended the same reward of automatic promotion, and unfortunately I have a feeling neither team will achieve promotion this weekend which would unfortunately mean ending successful campaigns on a low. Hopefully a rule change will grant automatic promotion and relegation before long.

    Ring/Rackard relegation/promotion play-off

    MAYO (23) -V- ROSCOMMON (24)
Difficult to read this game as both teams played in different league divisions and in different championship competitions, Mayo retained 2B status by winning a similar play off earlier this year while Roscommon had a mid table campaign in 3A. Mayo have played against a higher standard of opposition this year. Form favours Roscommon (3 wins) over Mayo (3 defeats) but the rankings give Mayo the nod.
Result based on current ratings; Mayo by 1

    Rackard/Meagher relegation/promotion play-off

    LOUTH (31) -V- FERMANAGH (30)
Fermanagh put a disappointing league campaign behind them by claiming the Meagher Cup while Louth had a disappointing Rackard campaign and are set for their lowest end of season position since 2004. The tie between the two in February resulted in a convincing win for (home team) Louth by 4-17 to 3-7, Louth will not have the benefit of home advantage here, and unlike Fermanagh they haven't enjoyed a victory since that league meeting; has the tide turned in favour of Fermanagh since then?
Result based on current ratings; DRAW
Fermanagh have a slight points advantage but the gap is in draw range. However I have a feeling Louth will retain their status.

Why don't they just get rid of these play offs, automatic promotion for the Christy Ring winners but none for the Rackard and Meagher winners,

Instead they get put out a week after against two teams that have lost two championship games already,if you lose two games you deserve to go down.

Congratulations to Roscommon and Fermanagh for overcoming the arguably unnecessary and unfair extra hurdle towards promotion of these play offs, surely the time has come to abandon these play-offs in favour of automatic relegation and promotion?

Roscommon finish in their highest end of season position since 2005, while Mayo finish in their lowest end of year position since 2003.

And for all but 12 counties there will be no more competitive hurling until the league starts in the middle of February. Three big games next weekend, Laois looking to cause an upset against Galway, and last years All-Ireland finalists get play their first game of the championship as Tipperary go to Limerick while Kilkenny host Wexford.

    LEINSTER SHC

    GALWAY (5) -V- LAOIS (11)
The magnitude of their win over Dublin suggests that this may be one of those seasons we get every now and then where Galway make a genuine challenge? Laois too will come into this game on a bit of a high, plus they don't have the burden of pressure or expectation as anything other than a Galway win would be sensational.
Result based on current ratings; Galway by 11
Galway are more than capable of matching or surpassing that margin, but I expect Laois to keep it tighter than that. They have given Galway a few scares in the last few years, Galway to win but Laois to make them work for it.

    KILKENNY (2) -V- WEXFORD (9)
For Wexford to go to Nowlan Park and come away with a championship victory over Kilkenny would be incredible. Wexford were the story of 2014, and they have consistently been strong at under 21 level in recent years. Kilkenny, for all the retirements and experience they have lost since last year, have pretty much retained almost all of the players who started regularly last year. The league was difficult as they were missing a number of players on top of those retirements, but they're pretty much playing with a full deck again now.
Result based on current ratings; Kilkenny by 13
I believe Wexford will give us a much more competitive game than that. Despite being All-Ireland champions, their league campaign has given us something that all other counties must genuinely fear; a Kilkenny team who feel they have a point to prove.

    MUNSTER SHC

    LIMERICK (7) -v- TIPPERARY (1)
Limerick have had issues with injuries but by all accounts Tipperary are not without problems in this department either. Just as in 2013 and 2014 Limerick enter the championship after a disappointing league campaign a division below Tipp and Tipp boast the higher ranking. But that counted for nothing as Limerick came out on top both times.
Result based on current ratings; Tipperary by 4
If I were putting money on it, I'd probably reluctantly back this, but a Limerick win won't be a surprise either. Limerick will need to have gone up a gear since the Clare game while Tipp will need to hit the ground running as they have failed to do in the previous two years.

    ULSTER SHC

    DERRY (17) -V- DONEGAL (25)
Derry have had a solid year and as it stands are better placed than Down to put an end to Antrim's 13 year hold on the Ulster title. Realistically, they won't be troubled by Donegal here.
Result based on current ratings; Derry by 16

    ARMAGH (22) -V- DOWN (18)
Down come into the game as favourites but Armagh have a good chance here as well. They had a strong campaign in the Rackard cup only to lose the final while Down had an average Ring cup campaign. Down finished third with Armagh 4th in division 2B with Down winning the tie between the two by 7 points aided by home advantage. This time home advantage is with Armagh.
Result based on current ratings; Down by 5

After a disappointing weekend (in terms of one sided games) nothing has changed in the McCarthy Cup order, in fact the main thing we were served with was a reminder that Kilkenny and Tipperary are still very much the two best teams in the country at the moment. And only Waterford and Galway look in any way capable of threatening those two teams. Some changes as a result of the Ulster championship, Roscommon now moving ahead of Armagh.

The McCarthy Cup takes a break for a weekend, tomorrow we have the qualifier draw and next weekend we have the Ulster semi final between Derry and Down.

Last weekend Down defeated Derry in the Ulster semi final and consequently both sides swap places. 10 of the remaining 12 McCarthy Cup teams play this weekend, and barring draws after extra time only 8 will remain on Sunday evening.

    Leinster SHC - Final

    GALWAY (5) -v- KILKENNY
    (2)
Victory for Galway by a margin greater than 3 points would see Kilkenny fall out of the top 2 for the first time since February 2002. That said, they do enter this game as favourites and their demolition of Wexford in the semi final ridiculed the notion that they might struggle with all the recent retirements, hell hath no fury like a Kilkenny team scorned. Similarly, Galway had a facile victory in their semi final against Laois. No team has defeated Kilkenny under Cody more than Galway with memorable victories in 2001, 2005 and 2012, and they have drawn twice in 2012 and 2014.
Result based on current ratings; Kilkenny by 4.
I'm saying nothing, over the years any time I make a prediction on a Kilkenny v Galway game I usually turn out to be miles off :o

    All-Ireland Qualifiers - Round 1

    CLARE (8) -v- OFFALY (10)
First time the two have met since the 2006 qualifiers where Clare won by 2-15 to 1-9 on a day when both managers played for their respective counties. Clare have a young All-Ireland winning squad and management team, their injury situation has improved, Galvin is back, and they have had 6 weeks to get their ship back in order since the Limerick game. Surely this 12+ month slump has to end sometime? I believe their resurgence will start this weekend, quite how far they will go remains to be seen but Offaly won't be the ones that take them down this year.
Result based on current ratings; Clare by 10.
I support this, might even be a bigger margin. Offaly lack the all round quality to defeat Clare even if their slump continues.

    LAOIS (10) -v- DUBLIN (6)
Very difficult to judge either teams form as they have fluctuated wildly this year, but I'd imagine a decent Laois contingent will make the journey to O'Moore Park in the hope of claiming a second championship win on home soil in four weeks. Dublin are shaping up to be a long term project for Ger Cunningham, they won't be A-I contenders this year but they have enough experience and quality players to emerge from Portlaoise with the victory.
Result based on current ratings; Dublin by 8.
If I had to pick one outside bet this weekend, I'd actually pick Laois, they'll give Dublin a bit of a scare, I still don't think they'll have enough to shade it though.

    WESTMEATH (13) -v- LIMERICK (7)
A first ever championship meeting of these two sides. Westmeath have had a good year by their standards and they knew all along they would most likely draw a Munster side, the key for them was to get the home draw, so in that respect they got exactly what they wanted; a glamour home tie, and dreams of a major upset. Tipperary laid Limerick's weaknesses bare so Westmeath will know how to hurt them. Tactically they might make Limerick suffer but Limerick have the better overall individual quality to see this one through. Having watched them a few times in the last few years I feel Westmeath are reasonably strong in the air. Limerick will win this one, but it won't be the cricket score that many expect.
Result based on current ratings; Limerick by 12.
Will be closer to 8 I reckon, a lot will depend on whether Limerick start to score goals, if they continue with their relatively poor rate of raising green flags it could be a long 70 minutes for them.

    WEXFORD (9) -v- CORK (4)
This could be a cracker, you just know Wexford will smell blood here, a big crowd came out for the Clare game last year and Cork's performance against Waterford won't have struck fear into them. Cork have a good record against Wexford however, for both teams this represents a decent challenge and the winner will have had the best preparation for round 2. If Wexford are to ever break into the top 8 of the rankings they need to win home games like this, Cork's greater experience could well tell in the end, but (what I personally perceive to be) Wexford's greater goal threat make this one extremely difficult to call.
Result based on current ratings; Cork by 3.
A Wexford win though at longer odds, wouldn't be a major upset. Really looking forward to this one.

Wexford appeared to be knocking on the door of the top 8 but a big defeat at home to Cork only confirms their number 9 status, unfortunately their 2015 season has been very disappointing, in addition to yesterday there were home defeats to Limerick and Waterford in the league. Similar story for Offaly, given their dry spell at underage it's very difficult to see them returning to the standards they set in the 80's and 90's. Laois and Westmeath also exiting.

Only change is as a result of Dublin and Galway winning and losing respectively, Kilkenny take a step closer to Tipperary. With 6 of the top 8 in direct competition, next weeks table will most likely be far more interesting.

Next weekend; Munster final, Ulster final and two qualifiers, and the All-Ireland picture will be much clearer.

If I had to pick one outside bet this weekend, I'd actually pick Laois, they'll give Dublin a bit of a scare, I still don't think they'll have enough to shade it though.

i am going to have to start taking your advice a llittle more seriously . . . . that would have made a fairly serious accumulator :)
good call on all of those spot on the limerick margin , also would have expected the wexford/cork game to be much closer too

Kilkenny get 5 weeks to watch how things develop before we see them again while Galway will watch next weekends qualifiers with interest as they await their next opponent. Also, the Ulster final.

    Munster SHC - Final

    WATERFORD (3) -v- TIPPERARY
    (1)
In a way it's almost unfair on Waterford that they are still seen as somewhat of an unknown quantity despite an exceptional year so far, the only blot on their record coming in the league when they drew with Limerick. Tipperary's victory over Limerick made a big statement but Waterford are a completely different kettle of fish, they won't afford Tipperary anywhere near the same level of space to exploit in their defence, and despite claims Waterford are a negative/defensive team (nonsense in my opinion), they have scored well in their games this year.
Result based on current ratings; Tipperary by 6.
Home advantage increases the difference, if anything else this will be an intriguing clash of styles, but Tipp have greater experience, they have home advantage and although Waterford have come on in leaps and bounds this season you suspect that when it comes to July/August/September hurling that Tipperary are further down the line than Waterford, big games like this will go a long way towards getting Waterford to that level however.

    All-Ireland Qualifiers - Round 2

    LIMERICK (7) -v- DUBLIN (5)
One suspects both teams will be happy to have drawn each other, both teams enjoyed victories last weekend away to weaker opposition by scorelines that probably flattered both teams. An opportunity for either team to kickstart their seasons as they have both endured difficult seasons but unlike Limerick, Dublin have put in a few very good performances along the way, including a comprehensive win over Limerick in the league quarter final. Dublin are adjusting to Cunningham and a new style of playing, while with Limerick you know what you're going to get, but the suspicion now is that that has made them predictable.
Result based on current ratings; Dublin by 2.
Limerick are in a backs to the wall type scenario that has a tendency to bring the best out of them so you never know, but unfortunately for my county I see Dublin edging what I feel will be a poor enough game.

    CLARE (8) -v- CORK (4)
The winner of this game will enter the quarter finals in a strong position, a good test for both sides and for the winner a chance to carry a bit of momentum forward against a defeated provincial finalist. Hard to read too much into both teams last games, Cork were very good in the first half but not so good in the second against Wexford, while Clare put in a strong overall performance at home to a weak Offaly. Clare have the ability to open up the Cork defence but they also have the ability to hit the self-destruct button.
Result based on current ratings; Cork by 5.
I strongly disagree with this, this margin only reflects the fact that Clare have won only two of their last 12 competitive games, their ranking points do not reflect the potential they have. Things are more settled in the Clare camp now, players back from injury and suspension (and the USA) combined with a strong performance last weekend makes them a big threat once more, and Shane O'Donnell will have a big impact on this championship based on what I've seen of him thus far. Clare by 4 for me.

    Ulster SHC - Final

    ANTRIM (14) -v- DOWN (17)
Antrim have won every Ulster title since 2002, which incidentally has not really been in any way significant since 2004 which was the last time it offered a route into the All-Ireland championship. Antrim have had a terrible year, suffering relegation in both league and championship. Down had mediocre campaigns in 2B of the league and the Ring Cup. Antrim haven't played competitively since May while Down last month played and won the quarter and semi finals of this competition.
Result based on current ratings; Antrim by 4.
Perhaps Down have a bit of momentum but Antrim have had plenty of time to regroup and focus on this game. They have played a higher standard of opposition all year long and that should stand to them. However, they have had a terrible year, and they don't have the traditional home advantage they enjoy in the Ulster final, so it's by no means a certainty.

Ranking predictions; Tipperary by 6, Dublin by 2, Cork by 5, Antrim by 4.
My predictions; Tipperary by 3, Dublin by 4, Clare by 4, Antrim by 2.

It has been a disappointing few weeks as not much has changed on account of higher ranked teams winning their games as expected, normally the rate of upsets is a little higher which leads to more movement.

As it is though, one change this weekend, Cork and Waterford swap places after their respective victory and defeat, separated by a tiny margin.

Limerick and Clare finish 7 and 8 and with a bit of a gap to the top 6 now. Limerick's win over Clare in the Munster championship is probably exactly why they finished a solitary point above Clare. As the top 6 are the six teams that will contest 1A next season it could be a while before one of the Shannonside counties breaks back into the top 6, as they will have a very limited scope to regain points until the quarter final stages of the league at least.

Antrim win their 14th Ulster title in a row. Both they and Down consolidate their ranking positions, and Antrim are spared the fate of setting a new worst ever end of season finish.

    ALL-IRELAND QUARTER FINAL

    WATERFORD (4) -v- DUBLIN (5)

Although Dublin have been far from convincing since their blistering start to the league they find themselves back in the All-Ireland series for the third season running. Both they and Limerick were given an opportunity to take a bit of momentum forward into the All-Ireland series but in truth their victory over Limerick, though well earned, hardly inspired confidence that they will go much further. Do they have the firepower to build up a sufficient score against a well structured Waterford side?

For Waterford, the Munster final was the first blot on what has been an excellent season, they're a tough team to break down but Kilkenny and Tipperary will always find a way, there have been arguably unfair question marks over their scoring power, and some would feel the Munster final would vindicate those question marks. But we're setting the bar very high indeed if Tipperary in Semple Stadium is the barometer by which we measure teams, Waterford are not at Tipp/KK level yet, but victory in this game would be important in getting them to that stage, their reward would be a shot at Kilkenny, and it will only benefit this team to play regularly against the very best.

Predicted result based on ratings gap; Waterford by 2

This will be only the 4th ever meeting between the two sides, the first two meetings were All-Ireland finals with both sides winning the Liam McCarthy Cup once at the expense of the other. They met 10 years ago in the qualifiers, I'm backing Waterford to win but I can't imagine Dublin will only score 1-3 this time around!!

    PREVIOUS CHAMPIONSHIP MEETINGS
1938: Dublin 2-5; Waterford 1-6. (Croke Park, Dublin)
1948: Waterford 6-7; Dublin 4-2. (Croke Park, Dublin)

    ALL-IRELAND QUARTER FINAL

    GALWAY (6) -v- CORK (3)

Anthony Cunningham told Brian Cody he'd see him again at the final and as ever with Galway you can never be sure, at their best they're up there with Kilkenny and Tipperary but they are very capable of being awful. Very convincing in the replay against Dublin but how good are Dublin? Galway as usual not without talent, particularly up front but I'm not sure about Iarla Tannian's credentials as a centre back, and the age old issue of full back still remains unsolved in my opinion. Keep an eye out on Conor Whelan at wing forward, thrown into the big time at 18 years old!

Cork made good use of the qualifiers, an excellent first half against Wexford was coupled with a wobbly second half, and the Clare game saw a good improvement but they hit far too many wides. Mark Ellis has been important for them in the last two games while Séamus Harnedy's return has made a positive impact since his return from injury. Cork's achilles heel remains; goal threat.

Predicted result based on ratings gap; Cork by 3

Many tipping Galway here but I believe a convincing victory over a very average Dublin side has flattered perceptions of them and I believe Cork's experience and momentum from the qualifiers will see them through.

This will be the 33rd meeting of the two sides, Cork actually won the first 19 times (from 1903 to 1969) and since then Galway have won 7 of the previous 13, including the last 3 meetings.

    PREVIOUS TEN CHAMPIONSHIP MEETINGS
1983: Cork 5-14; Galway 1-16. (Croke Park, Dublin)
1985: Galway 4-12; Cork 5-5. (Croke Park, Dublin)

2009: Galway 1-19; Cork 0-15. (Semple Stadium, Thurles)
2011: Galway 2-23; Cork 1-15. (Gaelic Grounds, Limerick)
2012: Galway 0-22; Cork 1-17. (Croke Park, Dublin)

    FERMANAGH
Highlight: Claiming the Meagher Cup was followed up a week later by clinching promotion to the Rackard Cup for 2016.
Lowlight: Relegation to 3B in the league after losing all 5 league games mattered little as it was soon followed the death of Shane Mulholland in a car accident. The Meagher Cup success was dedicated to the 27 year old panel member.
    Final 2015 ranking; 29th

    25 year high; 25th (1996)
    25 year low; 34th (2009,2010,2011)
2016 objective; Retain Rackard Cup status and win division 3B.

    LANCASHIRE
Highlight: Their game with Sligo aside, they put in a respectable debut season where they were competitive in their games.
Lowlight: All 4 games ended in defeat. (And that 17 point defeat to Sligo)
    Final 2015 ranking; 36th
    Final 2014 ranking; N/A
    25 year high; 36th (2015)
    25 year low; 36th (2015)
2016 objective; Winning one game in the Meagher Cup would represent progress, it would also be beneficial for the county to enter division 3B in the league, I'm not sure if this is in the offing but it would be a positive step.

    LEITRIM
Highlight: For a team that often struggles and flirts with last place, they were competitive in 2016. Highlight probably being a 2 point win over neighbours Sligo in the league.
Lowlight:Two months on from that meeting they were trounced at home to Sligo in their opening Meagher Cup game, which meant their chase for a final spot was an uphill battle .
    Final 2015 ranking; 34th
    Final 2014 ranking; 34th
    25 year high; 31st (2007)
    25 year low; 36th (2011)
2016 objective; Promotion from 3B will most likely be beyond them but a Meagher Cup final place is within their reach. Given their resources and tiny player base, any year where Leitrim simply win a few games is respectable by their standards.

    SLIGO
Highlight: Bounced back from a terrible league campaign to claim a place in the Meagher Cup final.
Lowlight: The aforementioned terrible league campaign, bottom of 3B with defeats in each of their games.
    Final 2015 ranking; 33rd
    Final 2014 ranking; 33rd
    25 year high; 25th (2004,2010)
    25 year low; 33rd (1998,2014,2015)
2016 objective; They're a long way off the standard they set in the previous decade, promotion from both the Meagher Cup and 3B in the league is achievable but it would be good if they brought a bit of consistency to their game, they fluctuate from competitive to terrible a bit too much.

    WARWICKSHIRE
Highlight: Victory in the division 3B final of the league.
Lowlight: A disappointing defeat at home to Leitrim probably cost them a place in the Meagher Cup final.
    Final 2015 ranking; 32nd
    Final 2014 ranking; 32nd
    25 year high; 30th (2013)
    25 year low; 35th (2008,2009,2010)
2016 objective; Winning division 3A is beyond them but surviving is an achievable target, while a repeat of their 2013 Meagher Cup success will be the main target.

    ARMAGH
Highlight: Competitive by their standards throughout the year, a decent league campaign followed by a successful run to the Rackard Cup final.
Lowlight: The successful run was halted by Roscommon, Armagh suffering defeat in the final, a game they were widely expected to win.
    Final 2015 ranking; 23rd
    Final 2014 ranking; 23rd
    25 year high; 21st (2010)
    25 year low; 28th (2003)
2016 objective; Retain 2B status and win the Rackard Cup.

    DONEGAL
Highlight: An unremarkable year for Donegal, only two victories, both came following defeat in the first round of the Rackard cup, made their way back to the semi finals following victories over Longford and Monaghan. Playing to a high level by their historic standards however.
Lowlight: 5 defeats from 5 led to relegation from 2B although retaining 2B status was always going to be a big ask.
    Final 2015 ranking; 25th
    Final 2014 ranking; 24th
    25 year high; 24th (2014)
    25 year low; 34th (1999,2000)
2016 objective; Making a Rackard Cup final would be a big achievement for Donegal but the semi finals would be respectable, while in the league they will seek to return to 2B at the first opportunity.

    FINGAL
Highlight: They will have been satisfied with a big victory over neighbours Louth in the backdoor of the Rackard Cup.
Lowlight:Two defeats to Roscommon by a combined total of 31 points. Plus the overall sense of a distinctly average season.
    Final 2015 ranking; 27th
    Final 2014 ranking; 25th
    25 year high; 24th (2013)
    25 year low; 31st (2008)
2016 objective; There's always a sense of "Where exactly is this going?" with Fingal, an average Rackard Cup side who are not good enough for Ring Cup and too good for Meagher Cup, would be good to go one better than 2015, so semi finals at least of Rackard Cup and 3rd or better in 3A of the league.

    LONGFORD
Highlight: Not many, but their year ended on a satisfactory note after retaining their Rackard Cup status following their defeat of Louth in the relegation play-off.
Lowlight: Failure to clinch the division 3B title as they lost the final to Warwickshire after completing the group stage with a 100% record.
    Final 2015 ranking; 30th
    Final 2014 ranking; 31st
    25 year high; 25th (2002)
    25 year low; 34th (2012)
2016 objective; Winning the 3B final has to be the main target for next season while simply retaining their Rackard Cup status will suffice in the championship.

    LOUTH
Highlight: Their sole victory of 2015 was a big victory over Fermanagh in the league, enabling them to retain their 3A status.
Lowlight: A terrible year for Louth was completed with defeat to Fermanagh in the Rackard/Meagher relegation/promotion play-off.
    Final 2015 ranking; 31st
    Final 2014 ranking; 28th
    25 year high; 24th (2000,2001,2002,2003,2012)
    25 year low; 31st (1991,1992,2004,2015)
2016 objective; Consolidate 3A status and anything other than instant promotion from the Meagher Cup will represent failure for the 'Wee county'.

    MONAGHAN
Highlight: Pushed Tyrone all the way in the race for promotion from 3A, completing the group phase undefeated.
Lowlight: Will have been disappointed by defeat to Tyrone in the 3A final and were beaten by Ulster rivals Donegal and Armagh in the Rackard Cup.
    Final 2015 ranking; 28th
    Final 2014 ranking; 30th
    25 year high; 24th (1991,1992,1994,1998)
    25 year low; 33rd (2001,2007)
2016 objective; They'll look to go one better in the league and win the 3A final and will look to make at least a semi final in the Rackard Cup.

    ROSCOMMON
Highlight: An excellent Rackard Cup campaign saw them defeat favourites Armagh in the final and even better for them was the sealing of Ring Cup hurling for 2016 at the expense of Mayo who they defeated in the play-off.
Lowlight: Failure to make the 3A final after defeats away to Tyrone and Monaghan.
    Final 2015 ranking; 22nd
    Final 2014 ranking; 27th
    25 year high; 18th (1994)
    25 year low; 27th (2014)
2016 objective; They will have a tough task retaining their Ring Cup status but that will be the target, and the Ring/Rackard play-off may well be their saviour. They will also expect success in 3A of the league.

    TYRONE
Highlight: Claiming the 3A title ensures that Tyrone's progress of recent years is rewarded with division 2 hurling next season.
Lowlight: A difficult Rackard Cup campaign saw defeats to Armagh and perhaps more disappointingly for Tyrone; Roscommon in the semi final when they failed to capitalise on home advantage.
    Final 2015 ranking; 26th
    Final 2014 ranking; 26th
    25 year high; 24th (1999)
    25 year low; 31st (2002,2003)
2016 objective; Surviving division 2B will be a massive task for Tyrone, they will need to pull off one major upset in their 5 games to achieve this. As for the Rackard Cup, they wont be happy with semi final appearances, they won in in 2014 and that will be their target for 2016.

    DERRY
Highlight: A successful run in the Christy Ring Cup brought them all the way to the final, their semi final victory over rivals Down being the highlight.
Lowlight: Defeat to Kerry in the final was a low note on which to end a positive season overall for Derry.
    Final 2015 ranking; 18th
    Final 2014 ranking; 18th
    25 year high; 11th (2001)
    25 year low; 23rd (1997)
2016 objective; There isn't much room to improve, another final appearance in the Ring Cup would be good but Antrim will be red hot favourites to win the tournament, they also stand in the way in 2A of the league, Derry will target a promotion push.

    DOWN
Highlight: Not many to choose from, bounced back from 1st round defeat in the Ring Cup to make it back to the semi finals.
Lowlight: They did not meet their ambitions, having won the Ring Cup in 2013. They remain in 2B in the league and they will be disappointed with the defeat to Derry in the Ring semi final.
    Final 2015 ranking; 17th
    Final 2014 ranking; 19th
    25 year high; 8th (1995)
    25 year low; 21st (2012)
2016 objective; First, promotion from 2B. They have a poor record against neighbours Antrim so Ring Cup success will elude them unless they overcome that hurdle.

    KERRY
Highlight: An exceptional season for Kerry, the 2A league trophy and the Ring Cup added to the trophy cabinet. However I'm going for the 1B/2A play-off when they successfully defeated Antrim, in retrospect; a season defining game for both teams.
Lowlight: The only candidate is a heavy defeat at home to Westmeath in the league.
    Final 2015 ranking; 12th
    Final 2014 ranking; 13th
    25 year high; 12th (1996,2015)
    25 year low; 21st (1992)
2016 objective; Consolidation is the key, retention of 1B and McCarthy Cup status is the challenge now for Kerry. A top two finish in the poorly named 'Leinster Qualifier Group' earns Kerry a place in the Munster championship for the first time since 2004. (Contrary to popular belief, they will NOT take part in the Leinster Championship proper)

    KILDARE
Highlight: A flawless campaign in division 2B ensures Kildare play their league hurling in 2A.
Lowlight: Suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Kerry in the semi final of the Ring Cup.
    Final 2015 ranking; 16th
    Final 2014 ranking; 16th
    25 year high; 15th (2006,2007,2008,2014,2015)
    25 year low; 23rd (1991,1992,1993,1994,1999)
2016 objective; Promotion is most likely beyond Kildare in the league to retaining their 2A status will be a success. In the Ring Cup they will look to match their 2014 success.

    LONDON
Highlight: Not many, but their replay victory away to Kildare in the first round of the Ring Cup represents their best moment of 2015.
Lowlight: A poor year, have fallen away from standards that brought them to the McCarthy Cup. Worst day probably the heavy defeat at home to Carlow in the league.
    Final 2015 ranking; 19th
    Final 2014 ranking; 17th
    25 year high; 16th (1997,1998,2012)
    25 year low; 24th (2004,2005)
2016 objective; Stop the rot, will look to have a more comfortable season in the league after they flirted with relegation this year and the semi finals of the Ring cup would represent an improvement.

    MAYO
Highlight: Victory over Donegal in their very first game of the year enabled Mayo to retain their division 2B status for 2016.
Lowlight: From there, a run of 8 consecutive defeats culminated with defeat to neighbours and main rivals Roscommon resulting tin the two teams swapping Ring/Rackard status.
    Final 2015 ranking; 24th
    Final 2014 ranking; 22nd
    25 year high; 17th (2009)
    25 year low; 32nd (1997)
2016 objective; Retention of their division 2B status will be the first target but more importantly they will seek a quick return to the Ring Cup.

    MEATH
Highlight: Best result was probably a good home victory over Down in the league, little by way of highlights for Meath in 2015 unfortunately.
Lowlight: Take your pick from three defeats to Kildare, twice at home, one in the division 2B final.
    Final 2015 ranking; 20th
    Final 2014 ranking; 20th
    25 year high; 12th (1997)
    25 year low; 22nd (1999)
2016 objective; Will seek to push on and go one better in 2B, promotion certainly well within their reach, and they will target a semi final place in the Ring Cup. And a victory over Kildare!

    WICKLOW
Highlight: Successfully retaining Ring Cup status by beating Mayo in the relegation play-off.
Lowlight: Relegation from division 2A in the league, only two victories in total in 2015.
    Final 2015 ranking; 21st
    Final 2014 ranking; 21st
    25 year high; 15th (1999)
    25 year low; 23rd (1996)
2016 objective; One would like to see them push on in the Ring cup as their existence in that competition is spent surviving rather than challenging, but in reality preserving their status is the target. In the league, they will look to come back up to division 2A.

I'll finish up today with the four qualifier group teams. Enjoy the quarter finals!

    ANTRIM
Highlight: Sums up their season that the only highlight is their Ulster final success.
Lowlight: Where to start? Relegation from 1B was bad enough, but heavy defeats to Westmeath and Carlow have cost them their McCarthy Cup status.
    Final 2015 ranking; 14th
    Final 2014 ranking; 12th
    25 year high; 9th (1994)
    25 year low; 14th (1995,2000,2015)
2016 objective; Undo the damage done this year, for Antrim double relegation is a disaster, so only double promotion will do for 2016.

    CARLOW
Highlight: Pulled a 10 point victory out of the bag against Antrim in what was effectively a relegation play off.
Lowlight: They will probably be happy with their season as they met their minimum targets but they'll probably be disappointed with defeat at home to Laois in a tight encounter which arguably cost them a place in the Leinster championship proper.
    Final 2015 ranking; 15th
    Final 2014 ranking; 14th
    25 year high; 13th (2009,2010,2012)
    25 year low; 22nd (2004)
2016 objective; They'll aim to claim a place in the Leinster quarter final. Offaly will provide stiff opposition in that regard but they will target Westmeath and Kerry. A promotion push from division 2A will also be targeted.

    LAOIS
Highlight: Can only be the victory over Offaly, a fine convincing win it was, it also means Laois take Offaly's place as one of the 10 automatic McCarthy cup qualifiers in 2016.
Lowlight: A lackluster league campaign was a disappointment, but the manner of the defeat to Galway was a low point.
    Final 2015 ranking; 11th
    Final 2014 ranking; 11th
    25 year high; 8th (1996)
    25 year low; 13th (1992,1993)
2016 objective; Their league performances fell some way short of what they produced in 2014, they'll look to make it back to the quarter final stage. Another victory in the Leinster championship would be a welcome boost.

    WESTMEATH
Highlight: An excellent response to losing the 2A league final saw them edge Carlow before destroying Antrim by 17 points to claim their place in the Leinster championship.
Lowlight: Will be disappointed to have lost to Kerry in the 2A final, particularly after beating them by 15 points in the group stage in Tralee.
    Final 2015 ranking; 13th
    Final 2014 ranking; 15th
    25 year high; 12th (2005)
    25 year low; 20th (1999)
2016 objective; They laid good foundations this year so they must build on that, first and foremost promotion to 1B should be the aim. After that? If they can match this years championship performance they will have had a good 2016.

Waterford back up to third and Galway make a big points gain to bring them up to 4th. Both will enter their semi finals as underdogs. Two weeks time until Kilkenny v Waterford.

    CLARE
Highlight: The win at home to Dublin came in the wake of the Davy O'Halloran/Nicky O'Connell saga, an important win at the time which appeared it could be the catalyst for better things to come but alas it wasn't to be.
Lowlight: The defeats to Cork, comprehensively outplayed in the league clash and dumped out when leading with 10 minutes to go in the qualifier game.
    Final 2015 ranking; 8th
    Final 2014 ranking; 5th
    25 year high; 1st (1995,1997)
    25 year low; 10th (1992,2010,2011)
2016 objective; Promotion from 1B is a must for an All-Ireland winning squad and in the championship a first Munster championship since 1998 would be nice but given the 2013 success they will be aiming to repeat that even given how poor their results have been since then.

    CORK
Highlight: The victory over Clare in the qualifiers was hard fought and the likes of Harnedy and Ellis and Lehane appeared to be hitting form coming into the All-Ireland series.
Lowlight: It's not often that a Cork team at any level suffers a 12 point defeat, the magnitude of the defeat to Galway will hurt.
    Final 2015 ranking; 5th
    Final 2014 ranking; 3rd
    25 year high; 1st (1999,2004,2005)
    25 year low; 9th (1996)
2016 objective; They won't want another stint in 1B so retaining 1A status combined with a good run through the knockout phase would be welcome. A few top class players short of All-Ireland winning standard, making the semi finals would represent a good return even if that would not satisfy a county with Cork's ambitions.

    DUBLIN
Highlight: What a fantastic start to the season, two huge wins over Tipperary and Kilkenny in their first two league games.
Lowlight: It went downhill from there, the surrender to Cork from a strong position in the league semi final was extremely disappointing, but the replay defeat to Galway in the Leinster championship was comprehensive.
    Final 2015 ranking; 6th
    Final 2014 ranking; 7th
    25 year high; 4th (2011)
    25 year low; 14th (1996)
2016 objective; Despite having a disappointing season they probably met their expectations this year to be fair, at the very least they need to match this season (league semi final and All-Ireland quarters) but they do have plenty of room for improvement, they just need to start consistently performing.

    LIMERICK
Highlight: They somehow came away with a win from Wexford Park despite being 8 points down in the first half but victory over fellow Shannonsiders Clare was probably the most satisfactory moment of a poor year.
Lowlight: A huge defeat at home to Tipperary in the Munster semi final just about comes out on top of going out with a whimper to Dublin.
    Final 2015 ranking; 7th
    Final 2014 ranking; 6th
    25 year high; 1st (1998)
    25 year low; 9th (2003,2008,2010)
2016 objective; Get out of 1B, they have not experienced top tier league hurling since 2010. And as for the championship? They need to make it back to the All-Ireland quarters or semi's, but a period of transition lies ahead, they need to take a leaf out of Waterford's book and start integrating youth into the squad because things have gone very stale.

    OFFALY
Highlight: They took full advantage of a first minute red card for the hosts at Limerick in the league and came away with a well deserved (and comfortable) victory.
Lowlight: The defeat to Laois in the Leinster championship will have hurt them, but it also demotes them to the qualifier group for 2016.
    Final 2015 ranking; 10th
    Final 2014 ranking; 10th
    25 year high; 1st (1994)
    25 year low; 10th (2014,2015)
2016 objective; What can you say? It's sad to see how far this once great county has fallen, they will in all likelihood retain 1B status so a quarter final place will be the minimum target and a simply winning one championship match will represent progress next year. They should come through the qualifier group in top spot (opponents will be Carlow, Kerry and Westmeath).

    WEXFORD
Highlight: A thoroughly disappointing season from a side that had hoped to push on from a promising 2014, the highlight has been from the under 21 team winning another Leinster title but the only victories for the senior team were in the league against Laois, Antrim and Offaly.
Lowlight: A big defeat at Kilkenny was the worst day of 2015 but they also lost at home to Limerick, Waterford and Cork throughout 2015.
    Final 2015 ranking; 9th
    Final 2014 ranking; 9th
    25 year high; 1st (1996)
    25 year low; 10th (1995,2009,2012,2013)
2016 objective; The only county that has more room for improvement is probably Clare, they need to provide a proper challenge to Limerick and Clare in 1B as they didn't offer a strong enough challenge this year. They have a good group of young players coming through so at the very least they should seek to win a few championship games and make it back to the All-Ireland series like they did in 2014.

With Eamon Kelly stepping down as Kerry manager, its a massive blow to our lads,it always seems to be the case,we take one step forward and then then take two steps back,

Hopefully the right man will be appointed to continue the great work Kelly and his backroom team have done they have enstilled great belief into the players and they have come on a ton since he took over,

Maybe Conor Glesson who was trainer this year might step up and take it on.

    ALL-IRELAND SEMI FINAL

    KILKENNY (2) -v- WATERFORD (3)

A season defining game for Waterford, no matter what happens they have had an excellent 2015 but this game will give some indication as to just how far down the road of All-Ireland contention Waterford have come. Kilkenny have impressed in their two games thus far and during their 5 week wait Waterford have played two championship games, not that Kilkenny have ever had any issue dealing with the 5/6 week waits, that recently has been solely the curse of the Munster championship winning team.

Kilkenny will be without Jackie Tyrrell and Richie Power while there are doubts over Michael Fennelly and Richie Hogan, four massive players for Kilkenny, Brian Cody recently quoted as "absolutely certain" Waterford can win the All-Ireland, a depleted Kilkenny would certainly help that task.

Some suggesting this flattery and talk of injuries is mere mind games on Cody's part, time will tell!

Predicted result based on ratings gap; Kilkenny by 2

Current ranking points suggest this will be close, and if Kilkenny's injury situation is as bad as feared then Waterford have every chance. There may be a few relatively unfamiliar faces on the Kilkenny team but one suspects that although some Kilkenny panelists may lack experience, they won't be lacking in quality. I would truly love to see Waterford come through here, they've come on an awful lot since they pushed Kilkenny into extra time two years ago, can they avenge that defeat?

    PREVIOUS CHAMPIONSHIP MEETINGS
1957: Kilkenny 4-10; Waterford 3-12. (Croke Park, Dublin)
1959: Waterford 1-17; Kilkenny 5-5. (Croke Park, Dublin)
1959: Waterford 3-12; Kilkenny 2-10. (Croke Park, Dublin)
1963: Kilkenny 4-17; Waterford 6-8. (Croke Park, Dublin)
1998: Kilkenny 1-11; Waterford 1-10. (Croke Park, Dublin)
2004: Kilkenny 3-12; Waterford 0-18. (Croke Park, Dublin)
2008: Kilkenny 3-30; Waterford 1-13. (Croke Park, Dublin)
2009: Kilkenny 2-23; Waterford 3-15. (Croke Park, Dublin)
2011: Kilkenny 2-19; Waterford 1-16. (Croke Park, Dublin)
2013: Kilkenny 1-22; Waterford 2-16. (Semple Stadium, Thurles)

10 meetings, 8 KK wins, 1 draw, the replay of which was won by Waterford which gave them their last All-Ireland title in 1959.

A win for Waterford moves them into 2nd place and Kilkenny down to 3rd.
Any margin of victory greater than 3 points moves Kilkenny up to 1st.
Waterford will not fall below 3rd if they are defeated.

Only seeing this now, but why did Kelly step down? He did a great job there, Kerry have gone from a team we'd usually beat to a side that nearly always beats us...usually in vital games too!

With 1B & qualifier group to come next year, you'd imagine he would have loved a crack at that. I see your post was on July 27th so any update since, is there a new manager in yet & any word on why Kelly stepped down?

When he first left he said he was leaving because he was finding it hard travelling up and down from Tipp, but then I heard a rumour that he left because next year the County Board weren't willing to cancel club football games that involve the dual players, there is 7 or 8 on the panel,

I suppose he had the same problem this year as he said in this article, club football games clashing with league and Christy Ring games

As for a new manager, the names that the local media have been throwing out have been Mark Foley,Ciaran Carey and Conor Glesson

He talks a lot of sense in that article. I agree 100% about the Christy Ring, it's like something the gaa just want to get out of the way before the real stuff starts. I was in Croke Park that day & we got 3 decent games, but the small crowd that was in was lost in such a big stadium & there was no atmosphere at all.

Either the Christy Ring final needs to be played before an All-Ireland semi final or at worst moved to a venue half way between the teams

Seems that the club football games getting priority was the problem for Kelly. That needs to stop anyway if ye are to survive at the higher level. Was Gleeson involved with ye last year in some way?

Ya,he was the trainer,Kelly was the manager and Brendan Cummins was on board as goalkeeper coach,I hope Glessson steps up to take the job as manager and bring a bit of continuity to the set up,

Ya I agree on the football,if we are going to have any hope then the lads have to get the time to play for the hurlers and have time to recover after games.

And Kilkenny are back on top for the first time since March, although Tipperary will reclaim top spot should they defeat Galway next weekend.

Waterford will finish 3rd or 4th, they finished in the top 4 at the end of each season from 2007 to 2011 and had been absent since.

Out of curiosity, if Galway were to beat Tipp and then Kilkenny (by a few points in both matches), what position would they finish the season in?

Out of curiosity, if Galway were to beat Tipp and then Kilkenny (by a few points in both matches), what position would they finish the season in?

Depends! For starters, they won't move above Tipperary unless they defeat them by more than 6 points next weekend. Regardless of margins, if they defeat Tipp only to lose to Kilkenny they will fall back behind Tipperary again, but would in all likelihood stay above Waterford.

If they defeat Tipp by 1 to 3, they need to defeat Kilkenny by more than 3 points to claim 1st.
If they defeat Tipp by 4 to 6, again they need to defeat Kilkenny by more than 3 points to claim 1st.
If they defeat Tipp by 7 or more, a victory regardless of winning margin over Kilkenny will mean Galway finish 1st.

If they defeat Tipp by 4 to 6, again they need to defeat Kilkenny by more than 3 points to claim 1st.
If they defeat Tipp by 7 or more, a victory regardless of winning margin over Kilkenny will mean Galway finish 1st.

The most nerdy in-depth post ever I have read on boards. :) Well done.

    ALL-IRELAND SEMI FINAL

    TIPPERARY (2) -v- GALWAY (4)

As ever, you just never know with Galway, their game with Tipperary in the qualifiers was a neat 70 minute summary of Galway, they can both be brilliant and exciting on the one hand while inexplicably awful on the other. How they turned a 6 point advantage after 55 minutes into a 9 point defeat remains a mystery and it goes without saying that they will be keen to make up for that collapse.

Tipperary showed flashes of their very best against Limerick before dispatching of Waterford in a flat Munster final, the 5 week wait has seemingly taken the sting out of the Munster champion in the previous 3 seasons but many of this Tipp squad have twice successfully negotiated the semi final stage as Munster champions. Strange to think that this is actually Galway's 6th championship outing this year, their Leinster campaign was mixed but generally favourable and their performance against Cork suggested they have improved since then when they out-muscled and out-fought a disappointingly timid Cork team, but it was a promising performance from a team who unfortunately at various stages in the last ten years can be accused of folding when the going gets tough.

Predicted result based on ratings gap; Tipperary by 5

My big hope is that this is the game that finally kick-starts this championship into life as it feels as though we have sleepwalked our way to an all too familiar Kilkenny v Tipperary final. Both teams capable of producing a high scoring shoot out and really going toe to toe with each other. And hopefully we'll see Noel McGrath take to the field at some stage.

    PREVIOUS CHAMPIONSHIP MEETINGS
1988: Galway 1-15; Tipperary 0-14. (Croke Park, Dublin)
1989: Tipperary 1-17; Galway 2-11. (Croke Park, Dublin)
1991: Tipperary 3-13; Galway 1-9. (Croke Park, Dublin)
1993: Galway 1-16; Tipperary 1-14. (Croke Park, Dublin)
2000: Galway 1-14; Tipperary 0-15. (Croke Park, Dublin)
2001: Tipperary 2-18; Galway 2-15. (Croke Park, Dublin)
2003: Tipperary 1-18; Galway 1-17. (Pearse Stadium, Galway)
2005: Galway 1-20; Tipperary 1-18. (Croke Park, Dublin)
2010: Tipperary 3-17; Galway 3-16. (Croke Park, Dublin)
2014: Tipperary 3-25; Galway 4-13. (Semple Stadium, Thurles)

26 meetings, Tipperary with 20 wins to Galway's 6. Galway won only once in their first 15 meetings and it has been fairly even since their 16th meeting in 1987 with Tipp winning 6 to Galway's 5 in the last 11.

Go back 20 years and this semi-final match would be Galway's first championship outing of the summer (I'm purposely excluding their Connaught final game).

The current championship structure is far from perfect, but the old setup of having Galway enter at the AI semi-final stage was really ludicrous.

Galway swap places with Waterford and move up to third place after today's thriller.

    How will they finish??
    2m2e3j6.jpg

    • Galway will need to win by 4 or more points to claim 1st (I previously wrongly stated they needed to win by 7 or more)
    • Tipperary will definitely finish 2nd regardless of what happens.
    • A Galway victory of between 1 and 3 points leaves them still in 3rd, but the points gap from 1st to 3rd would be just 55 points, nothing between them really.
    • Waterford can actually still finish 3rd if Galway are defeated by more than 6 points.
    • If Kilkenny win by between 4 and 6 points, Waterford and Galway will actually tie for 3rd, both on 8592 points. (I can't recall two teams ever being dead level on the 25 years I have ran this)

OK, ZombieHanalei. Who's going to win then?

    ALL-IRELAND FINAL

    KILKENNY (1) -v- GALWAY (3)

Kilkenny as expected made their way back to the final, their 14th final appearance in 18 seasons going back to their 1998 defeat to Offaly. Far too good for Wexford, they always seemed in control against stiffer tests from Galway and Waterford, one really does get the sense that once again they have saved their best for the final.

Galway have had a long journey to the final, and along the way they have ended the seasons of two of the traditional big three, an emphatic win over Cork was followed by the semi final meeting with Tipperary in which they rode their luck somewhat, despite being the better team their failure to deal with Seamus Callanan almost cost them a game that on balance they should have won far more comfortably.

They have the firepower to bury most and live with anybody, but those Tipp goals will have given Kilkenny food for thought, and although they don't necessarily have a like for like Callanan in their ranks, they do know a thing or two about exposing obvious opposition weaknesses. Having said that, the Galway full back line didn't appear to be a major factor in the Leinster final clash between the two.

Predicted result based on ratings gap; Kilkenny by 3

Kilkenny won the Leinster final by 7 and they have beaten their predicted result by an average of 6 points in their three games so far, but Galway have beaten their predicted results by 7.83 points on average. (10 if you exclude the Leinster final). As much as I'd love to see Galway win, I just couldn't back against Kilkenny.

    PREVIOUS CHAMPIONSHIP MEETINGS
2006: Kilkenny 2-22; Galway 3-14. (Semple Stadium, Thurles)
2007: Kilkenny 3-22; Galway 1-18. (Croke Park, Dublin)
    2009: Kilkenny 2-20; Galway 3-13. (O'Connor Park, Tullamore)
2010: Kilkenny 1-19; Galway 1-12. (Croke Park, Dublin)
2012: Galway 2-21; Kilkenny 2-11. (Croke Park, Dublin)
2012: Kilkenny 0-19; Galway 2-13. (Croke Park, Dublin)
2012: Kilkenny 3-22; Galway 3-11. (Croke Park, Dublin)
    2014: Kilkenny 3-22; Galway 5-16. (O'Connor Park, Tullamore)
    2014: Kilkenny 3-19; Galway 1-17. (O'Connor Park, Tullamore)
2015: Kilkenny 1-25; Galway 2-15. (Croke Park, Dublin)

40 meetings, 29 Kilkenny wins, 9 Galway wins, 2 draws. The last 10 have all occurred under Brian Cody's time in charge of Kilkenny, and makes for relatively comfortable reading for Kilkenny. However they have met an additional 4 times in the Cody era, Kilkenny taking wins in 2000 and 2004 while Galway defeated Kilkenny in 2001 and 2005. Although Cody has defeated Galway 9 times, Galway have defeated his teams three times and taken him to replays twice.

Also; count the goals, I believe that's 43 goals in the last 10 games. The 2005 game was that epic 9 goal thriller won by Galway.

It will actually be Kilkenny's 15th All Ireland final appearance since 1998.

I intended to talk in terms of Cody's Kilkenny and changed my mind mid-typing! But yes, 15th appearance since 1998. For Cody it's 14 out of 17, which is mind-blowing really.

The reason I don't really get fed up of Cody and Kilkenny is I don't believe we will ever see anything like it again in hurling.

It's funny you say that but that's my feelings towards them.

I still don't know when it will end though.

Who the hell would take over AFTER Cody?

Kilkenny on top once again, Galway finish in third losing enough points to bring Waterford up to joint third.

Why are they below Tipperary? Well they did lose two of their last four games while Tipp lost one of their last three. Tipperary had a much higher rating at the start of the year and had a moderately better league campaign.

Since 1991, the All-Ireland champion has ended the season as the number 1 team in all bar two seasons.

The last time was in 2013, when Clare couldn't quite bridge the gap to Kilkenny, Kilkenny had won the previous two All-Ireland championships and league titles. Clare on the other hand had a terrible 2010 and 2011, won 1B of the league in 2012 before a mediocre championship, in 2013 they only avoided relegation after a play off. Needless to say, Kilkenny started the 2013 championship with a lot more cash in the bank in terms of ratings points and held on to top spot. Incidentally, Clare would gain top spot for a week following defeat of Kilkenny in the 2014 National hurling league but since then they have gradually fallen to 8th.

1998 was the other year. Like Clare in 2013, Offaly's efforts only brought them to 2nd place. But who finished top?
Was it Cork following their NHL success that spring and subsequent win away to Limerick in the Munster championship? No.
Was it Waterford following their run to the NHL and Munster final and quarter final win over Galway? No.
Was it Clare who had won the 1995 and 1997 All-Ireland titles combined with the 1997 and 1998 Munster champiopnships? No.
Maybe Kilkenny who were in the process of emerging from their mid 90's slumber to take the Leinster championship with a huge win over Offaly? No.

It was none other than; Limerick.

How on earth did that happen?? Their year ended in May when Cork came to the Gaelic Grounds and won on a scoreline of 1-20 to 3-11 and were nothing but a distant memory by the time the All-Ireland final was played that September.

    21c9xch.jpg

    Here's how it happened;
    • The 1997 NHL campaign actually ran in tandem with the 1997 championship, so despite exiting the 1997 championship with a whimper away to Tipp, Limerick came back and won the league.
    • Limerick gained so many points that the only reason Clare finished in 1st was due to the championship games being weighted in the calculations.
    • The 1998 league was played in spring, and Limerick launched a strong defence of that title winning all 5 of their group games, only to suffer defeat at the hands of Waterford.
    • You can see that by the end of April, Limerick as the standout team had built up a large lead of over 400 points.
    • Limerick were brought crashing back down to earth in May, shipping a big defeat to Waterford in the NHL semi final and ending the month with defeat in the Munster championship to Cork leaving them with 458 points less than they started the month with, bringing them right back down into the middle of Clare, Wexford, Cork and Galway.
    • However, look how far back Offaly are, in terms of the rankings system the norm for Offaly in the 90's was terrible league campaigns followed by strong championship performances.
    • An unusual and wide open championship then followed. And it appeared that 1st place came as a curse in 1998.
    • Cork took top spot after following up their league success by defeating Limerick at the Gaelic Grounds. However they then lost their next game with a heavy defeat to Clare, bringing them back just below Limerick.
    • Clare took top spot from Cork, and held it for a little longer but a tumultuous summer lay ahead for Clare, they were taken to a replay by Waterford, and beaten by Offaly at the third attempt, as Offaly were ranked lower this took a serious chunk out of their points, not only putting them behind Limerick, but back behind the Cork team they had comprehensively defeated earlier.
    • This moved Kilkenny into top spot. Offaly had gained ground in Leinster following their victory over Wexford but were defeated in the final by Kilkenny, this gave Kilkenny enough points to move above Limerick and fill the top spot vacated by Clare.
    • And finally, despite being heavy favourites, Kilkenny were defeated by Offaly in the final, which moved them back behind Limerick, and moved Offaly tantalisingly close to Limerick, just 16 points shy, a bonus point victory would have seen them move ahead.
    • Ultimately, a poor league campaign combined with defeat in the Leinster final conspired to deprive Offaly of top spot.

So there you have it, a wide open championship littered with lower ranked teams defeating higher ranked teams meant that a handful of 5 or 6 teams who were better than Limerick cancelled each other out to the extent that not one of them was able to topple Limerick's points total which was built on the back of a run of 9 successive victories in league hurling after their 1997 championship exit.

I've been doing work on this bit by bit throughout the year, I have a new start point of 1965 as that best suits the data I have available. Here's a snap of the mid to late 1970's, and I did a write up focusing on one team from this era you may or may not find interesting!

    t8t094.jpg

Clare had some team towards the end of the 1970's, they just couldn't put it together for the championship.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 695 ✭✭✭zombieHanalei

Division 2 of the 1968-69 hurling league consisted of 10 teams, nine teams divided into three groups of three teams bases on geographical proximity. 2A contained Mayo, Westmeath and Roscommon. 2B contained Meath, Down and Antrim. And 2C contained Wicklow, Carlow and Kildare. Each team would play each other twice and the winner of each group advancing to the semi finals. What about the 10th team? Kerry, much like Galway in the All-Ireland series until the introduction of the backdoor, got a bye straight to the semi finals.

Kildare would come from relative obscurity by their standards and have themselves a flawless league campaign, they started with a 5 point win at home to Wicklow, then a very impressive 13 point win away to Carlow (who in the 1960's had been somewhat of a dark horse registering championship victories over Offaly and Laois <twice> in that decade), and followed that by smashing Carlow at home by 23 points before concluding the group stage with a 100% record with victory over Wicklow. In the knockout phase they completely dominated, registering big victories over Down and Westmeath.

Although a division 2 title may seem insignificant in the grand scheme of hurling history, it set in motion Kildare's own little golden era, where they spent the next decade holding their own with counties they traditionally were a million miles away from.

They finished 1969 in 13th place, they had not been entered into that season's championship and the 'B' championship would not come into existence until 1974. Their reward for a successful 1969 was a place in the Leinster championship. However, such was the structure of the league at the time, they were not entitled to promotion.

1970 Kildare once again looked set to conquer all in the league, making their way back to the final seemingly at their ease before suffering defeat to Antrim in the final on a scoreline of 2-13 to 3-8. However they finished the league with 12th place in the rankings. Their first appearance in the Leinster championship since 1945 resulted in a credible 1 point defeat to Laois, which saw them fall to 14th in the final 1970 rankings.

1971 The league was reformed for the 70-71 campaign with a format similar to the present structure, except with 7 or 8 teams in 1A and 1B instead of 6. Kildare had a difficult opener away to Clare, and lost by 8 points in Ennis. However, they followed that up with a sensational victory at Waterford on a scoreline of 5-11 to 4-7. This was followed by a 7 point victory over Laois and a 14 point mauling of Kerry in Tralee. Additional victories over Antrim and Westmeath meant Kildare finished 2nd behind Clare, earning them a quarter final berth with Tipperary. They were actually level with the Premier county at half time but went on to lose by 5-16 to 3-10.
They entered the championship with a ranking of 11th, but suffered a disappointing and surprising defeat to Westmeath in the Leinster championship seeing them finish the season in 12th.

1972 An opening day defeat to a big gun (this time Galway) was again followed by a big victory over Waterford by 7 points. However subsequent defeats to Laois and Wicklow put an end to their hopes of making the knockout phase for a second year running. Victories came against Kerry and Westmeath, while a further defeat was inflicted by Antrim. They entered the championship in 13th place, but once again they were defeated by Westmeath in Leinster leaving them down to 14th, and Kildare seemingly at risk of slipping back into obscurity.

1973 Started the league with a 10 point victory over Dublin but Waterford ensured there would be no three in a row of Kildare victories over Waterford with a 14 point victory in Cappoquin. Laois held the lily-whites to a draw, this was followed by victories over Wicklow and Kerry. Defeat to Antrim by 1 point jeopardised their qualification hopes but victory over championship bogey team Westmeath gave Kildare a second placed finish and a quarter final place against Tipperary. A heavy defeat was to follow and they entered the championship in 13th place. They faced Offaly in the Leinster championship only to be defeated by 9 points, finishing the year in 14th place.

1974 Dublin started by avenging Kildare's victory the year before but what followed was most impressive by Kildare. Victories over Offaly and Laois were followed by an 18 point thrashing of Wicklow, a 14 point hammering of Antrim in Ballycastle, and a 39 point destruction of Westmeath. Qualification to the knockout stages easily sealed, once again they faced Tipperary, and once again they were defeated. However a 2-16 to 2-10 scoreline more than respectable. They entered the championship at number 11, however they would not be in Leinster, they were now a part of the newly formed 'B' Championship. Unsurprisingly, they won with victories over Kerry, Meath, Westmeath and Antrim along the way. Their reward for winning the B Championship was an All-Ireland quarter final place against Galway, where they were defeated on a scoreline of 3-19 to 4-10. Final position; 11th.

1975 A condensed 1B in the 1974-75 NHL saw Kildare start the campaign with a three point defeat to Galway before registering wins over Laois, Offaly, Wicklow and Antrim. Second place again earning them a quarter final place against, you've guessed it; Tipperary. Defeat this time on a scoreline of 1-13 to 1-6. But, Kildare end the campaign in 10th, a measure of the consistency they achieved in the 1970's. They were back in the Leinster championship, came agonisingly close to getting that win holding Offaly to a draw before losing by a goal and three points in the replay. Final position; 12th.

1976 A disappointing start with a 10 point defeat at home to Waterford was followed by victory over Laois. Westmeath and Antrim were easily dispatched before defeat at Limerick left them with a 3rd place finish and 11th place in the rankings. An unremarkable league campaign gave no indication as to what was to come; Leinster Championship quarter final; Dublin 1-10, Kildare 3-10. A long time coming but finally the big championship win. A commendable semi final performance followed against Wexford losing on a scoreline of 2-19 to 2-15. Wexford went on to defeat Kilkenny by 17 points in the Leinster final. They finished 1976 in 9th.

1977 Their league campaign started with a disappointing 3 point defeat at home to Offaly. Victory at Antrim was followed by a 2 point defeat at home to Galway. Promotion and play off hopes once again over, they once again pulled a remarkable victory out of the bag, going to Dungarven and defeating Waterford for the third time on a scoreline of 2-13 to 2-8. Victories over Laois and Wicklow concluded their campaign, leaving them entering the championship in 10th. The championship finally saw them earn a victory over Westmeath who had beaten them twice earlier in the decade. They went on to suffer a heavy defeat to Wexford in the Leinster semi final but finished the year in 10th place.

Hereafter, Kildare went into a slow decline back to the the level they had been before and are now. A team hovering between 9th and 14th may not seem so remarkable and you may be wondering why I am focusing on them, but they spent the best part of a decade punching above their weight, they reached the quarter finals of the league on numerous occasions, were very consistent in the league and pulled off a few major victories along the way over Waterford, Offaly, Dublin and Laois.

Better this thread is getting,I didn't even know Kildare were that competitive

Did our lads ever break the top 10 like Kildare did?
