Dell Power Supply Unit..

    Hi Guys,

    My Dell Inspiron 546 is giving me a bit of trouble lately, and I need a Power Supply Unit for it.

    I think they are expensive new for it, and while I can get them on ebay, it nearly costs more to get them posted than it is to buy it.

    I'm told I can't spurious parts for it, and can only use a Dell unit for it.

    Would anyone know where I might get one locally?

    There's a few Dell PSU's on Adverts.ie you might want to check out.

    Is the Inspiron 546 a slim line or mini tower?

    Pics of power supply would help

    It's the slim line.

    The only pic I have is the one on my first post. I can't take the unit out because if I do it could take hours and hours to get it started up again.

    The PSU doesn't need to be replaced with the same model number.

    After a google search the form appears to be TFX so you can get any TFX power supply with at least 300W.

    have a look at some options here:

    I had received this from a Computer shop I mailed about it..

    "We do not support Dell products . You would need to speak with Dell Customer Support .
    Dell systems are designed to not accept industry standard components ."

    Once I saw that I presumed it had to be a Dell replacement.

    Looks like I best take out the unit now to see what it looks like to get a good match.

    I'd be surprised if that were true of Desktops ?

    Laptops yes, and I've experienced that with Dell laptop power supplies.

    Maybe the shop thought that the Dell Inspiron 546 was a laptop ?
    Because I've a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop and a cheap OEM replacement power supply I bought online didn't work.

    Ok..

    Good thinking..

    I will know more when I take out the one in the pc now... Just hope I can get it started again afterwards.

    Dell were notorious in the past for making their psu's propitiatory to the extent where they changed pin assignments on 'standard' connectors.

    maybe it wasn't powerful enough the 1720 is 17" desktop placement so needs more than a regular laptop.

    A lot of OEM do this. Many dells do have standard psus though.

    Thanks for the replies so far guys.

    I need the PC on the the next few days for College stuff, so I'm going to wait until Saturday morning and shut it down and remove the PSU to have a look at it. Hopefully I'll find a match somewhere for it.
