In the past few days we have identified Canada as a potential destination for September. Toronto and its surroundings looks nice on the travel videos but can anyone advise on their own experiences? Vancouver is a lot further away, and leave the option of visiting Seattle also.

How long are you planning on going for?

Fly to Edmonton, Rent a car
    From Edmonton go to Jasper
From Jasper drive to Banff taking in LaKe Morraine Parkway icefield Lake Louse
From Banff to Calgary. You could do this at a leisurely pace in about four days
Drop hire car in Calgary and take in Toronto for a few days on the way home.

Toronto has a regional airport (Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport) right in the city, so it makes it quick and easy to fly to nearby places such as Chicago, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec, New York, Washington, Boston ...

Toronto to Chicago, Quebec, New York, Washington or Boston is 1.5 hours.

Toronto to Ottawa or Montreal is 1 hour.

By car, Toronto to Ottawa or Montreal is 5 hours. Add another 3 for Quebec.

Boston and New York are 8 hours so maybe that is too much.

There is also Niagra Falls near Toronto, about 1.5 hours to drive.

I would also recommend the Rockies - it's further than toronto, but it's stunning. Also, if you have been to a large American city before, then Toronto isn't that much different IMO...Niagara Falls is nice, but apart from the waterfall itself, the surrounding area is not that nice.

If you did not want to go that far East, then Quebec would be a nice option too....you can do a road trip around the region.

A lot depends on what you want your trip to be though...is it nightlife, shopping (in which case, Toronto or Montreal would be right up your street) or do want to see beautiful scenery/do outdoorsy stuff?
