Was using my HP Pavillion laptop yesterday and it was working fine yesterday. Today I came home from college and turned it on and the screen is just staying black and nothing happens but the power lights are on the laptop. There are 2 lights flashing on the keyboard, one beside the caps lock sign on the keyboard and one above page up key above the keypad as u can see in attachments

my friend has dv 6000 hp,pavilion.
    dual core cpu.winxp os.
    WOULD not come on,
    i fixed it.
    but to turn it on,
HE HAS TO PRESS the top case plastic panel,
from left about 5 to 6 inches ,
press down gently ,for about 3-4 seconds .
its a known problem with the dv6000 models.
i had to go into my computer, control, panel, admin, storage,
    partition,
    and delete all the data,
    in the quickplay partition,
    about 400meg plus.
as it was stuck in quickplay dvd mode.,would not boot up from main os windows partition .
lights come on, screen is blank.
til panel is pressed to start BOOT UP mode, power on.
ie power on button just turns on 1 or 2 lights.

    THIS IS 3 YEARS AGO.
    I OPENED top panel.
i may have switched volume up control cable,
    with the power on button,
at this point i cant remember.
    if i moved the cable.
OR SWITCHED the volume cable to the power connector in order to fix it.
i did not delete any partition,
    or move it,
    i just opened quickplay partition,
deleted data re quickplay dvd mode.
did not delete any data from windows ,
    main partition.
i cant remember if i deleted the recovery partition.
    I think theres 3 partitions,
    quickplay,1-2 gig
    recovery,8 gig
and MAIN windows os partition 100gig plus.

i think there 2 cables under the top plastic cover ,
    1 for power on,
    1 for volume up ,down.

    he presses power on ,.
    lights come on,
then swipes across panel for a few seconds ,
    pressing down gently ,
like you would on a touch screen tablet .

IT MAY be stuck in quickplay mode,
    which enables dvd play ,
without booting up the os .

THIS is a known problem in certain hp pavilion laptops,
it was mentioned on twit ,tv ,
show, audio podcast weekly show. leo laporte
where people ring in with there pc, tech problems.
    see www.twit.tv
you can still download the mp3 ,
    if you can find it.

CERTAIN hp pavilions had a problem with the graphics card overheating .

Could be that the RAM needs to be reseated, happens quite a lot on those models when moved about in bags.

Take battery out, open RAM slot, and re-seat the RAM chip(s)

How do you open the ram slot?

Can you connect to an external monitor to see if there is output?

RAM slots are underneath ,the laptop,
    theres a rectangular cover,
    3-4inch long,
    OPEN THE 4 SCREWS,
    put screws in a bowl.
    put on gloves,take ram,out.
for 2 minutes put it back.
after power cable is out of power slot.
    wait 3 minutes.
Touch hands on cold water tap,
to get rid of static electricity ,
otherwise you may damage the ram chips.
USE a soft cloth to hold the chip.
try not to touch with bare skin.
or use an anti static wristband.

first Remove the laptop, battery and power cable, from power socket.
press 1 or 2 clips, to remove battery .

    PUT CD IN DVD drive,
    DOES activity light come on,
    connect to tv,
    with a vga cable.

MOST hdtvs have vga in port,
    borrow a vga cable .
OR TRY it in a netcafe.

Try PUSHING DOWN gently along top panel,
The panel between the keyboard and the screen,
From the power button to the right ,a few inches,
    AFTER lights come on.

    Try removing battery,
hold down power button for 30 seconds,
    with laptop off,
no power cable in the power socket.
    wait 3 mins .
    plug in power,cable ,
    ac power,
    only.
    no battery inside unit,
    turn on.

    some pavilions have problem,
    graphics card stops working .

HAS it got a svideo out port .
    plug in headphones
can you hear start up sounds.
    windows music start up tone.
does the cd eject button work?

IF you have another pc, laptop with window s on it ,
    you could connect hp laptop,
    to router by ethernet,
    or turn on wifi.
THEN set up a windows home network,
if hp laptop is ok,booting up windows ok,
    but no video out,
it,ll show up as a network device ,
hp 1 etc hp model xx
windows laptops connects by ethernet cable,

    automatically,to router
    no permission,
or activation needed.no wifi code needed.
ie no codes need to input ,or switch turned on.

    what model is this laptop,
    eg dv6200 ?

    MAYBE try dsl,
    boot off a livecd.
    damnsmall linux ,
    cdr ,download 50meg.
    put in cd.
    reboot laptop.
ITS possible ,vga, hdmi out may be disabled in windows ,
    os .due to malware,driver problem.

    http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

    THIS WORKS on any laptop,

    or pc.
burn iso image file at 2x or 4 x max.

    It's a pavilion DVD 6

The lights blink twice in a sequence and according to the link above that means bios corruption failure

It sounds to me like a graphics card problem

Is it an Nvidia GPU that you have? If so then that's a well known issue with overheating, there was even a class action lawsuit in the USA over it. Also there was a recall of overheating batteries in 2009.

There are fixes on Youtube (search HP Pavilion DV6000 GPU reflow) but they're both complex and temporary.

I got nearly 4 years from my Pavilion dv9000 before it overheated, from what I've read online I'm lucky to have gotten that long. Had I been running modern games it would not have lasted as long. Due to these issues I will not be buying any more HP products.

If your sure this is the cause then update your Bios.

To those suggesting running a Linux cd or upgrading the BIOS, in the first post the OP explains that there is NOTHING appearing on the screen so how are you going to achieve these tasks?
