    Hi all,

The ould fella needs a new computer. The current one is crashing and generally is on its last legs.

He is used to windows 7 and might be too much hassle for him to learn windows 8.

The budget would be up to 500 euro.

Any recommendations for a desktop like this?
Doesn't have to be too fancy.

    Cheers!

W8 looks like W7 underneath. Just turn off Metro with Classic Shell. Takes like a minute.

Or you could just buy something off adverts with a 7 licence.

Something like this probably has one. http://www.adverts.ie/desktops/hp-compaq-6300-pro-microtower-core-i3-pc-new-pc/4980372

    Thanks lads.

I think I'll pop into PC World and see what's on offer.

He wants me to get it in a bricks and mortar place.

I dunno if I'll be able to get a Windows 7 so the classic shell thingy for Windows 8 will have to be used.

    Cheers!

    There,s
    FREE programs win 8 start menu,replacement ,
    start 8 etc
installs win 7 style start menu.
win 8.1 update will have boot to desktop mode.
i Think it,ll be avaidable in about 1 month.
i,d prefer to buy a pc on adverts,ie with win 7,
    as i hate windows 8.

windows 8 is a backwords os,
    design a tablet touch os,
for pcs, with no touch screen,
    what a great idea.?

i dont wanna support ms by buying a mediocre os.

Windows 8 is almost the same as windows 7. You've just got to turn off Metro.

Do you give up on Windows 7 because it has IE10? No you install Chrome.

If he thinks he'll get better service from a B&M store he's sadly mistaken.

I agree totally, it's much cheaper on-line and a lot more to choose from.

OP, depending on what the PC is needed for it might be worth to give linux mint a shot on the old PC. http://linuxmint.com/

I did win2000 -> linux mint conversion a couple months ago for a 60+ person and the biggest complain, so far is that scrolling in LibreOffice Impress doesn't work in the same way as in MS PowerPoint :)

Yea, that's a good idea. Only thing is the PC he has at the moment is a bit of a dinosaur and on the way to extinction. There are hardware issues and constant blue screens of death.

I was around a few of the stores. Not much in the way of desktops these days. But I think I'll just get the cheapest box, strip down Windows 8 to the minimum and let him loose on it.

Sounds like a perfect machine for linux mint ;)

got an old laptop, dual core 2.oghz,

    2gig ram,
mint 16 latest version, runs very fast on it,even with 20 plus tabs open.
ON the main mint website, you can download ,older versions,
version 5 ,6 would run fine on an old pc.
32 bit version fits on 1 cdr disc, 600meg approx.
NOTHING wrong with buying a pc in a shop,
    supports irish jobs.
And you get a warranty for two years.
