I need my sight examined, with a few extra important questions. Not a surgery material, but beyond just getting a prescription updated. Is there anything between Specsavers and Blackrock Clinic type consultants, City Centre or South Dublin? Not much luck googling...

The Eye and Ear? Might be a long waiting list though.

Yeah, I don't mind paying for a visit, just want to get more attention than the usual job upstairs in Specsavers!

Look for an opthamologist rather than an optician. They know about diseases of the eye, anatomy, etc not just eyesight.

I would recommend the Eye and Ear. They open at 8am if you want to get your name down on the list. Doctors do not start shift until 9am. When I rang them they told me a Wednesday (midweek) is the least busiest day.
I was there about 2 weeks ago at 8am and out and seen to by 9:45am.

Excellent! Can I be there as a private (paying) patient or do I need to go through a GP? I've never been to a hospital bar one checkup and I have no clue :)

I went as a private patient too. There is a charge of €100. I felt I had something stuck in my eye but it turned out to be a corneal ulcer.
I would give them a call beforehand (ask for outpatients Dept when you phone the main number) just to double check if you want to be 100% sure before taking a trip over. Make sure also when you arrive to take a ticket from their machine as they call your number in turn.

I can't offer much advice on someone but you need to be seeing an ophthalmologist. I have ongoing eye problems which have required surgery in the past. As my regular specialist is no longer operating I was Referred to Martin O Connor in Charlemont Clinic.
My particular problem is quite unusual and I'm told that there are few doctors in the country that can deal with it and we were recommended him but I remember being often kept waiting well beyond appointment times which was annoying so would be slow to attend him by choice for that reason.
I had my surgery in Mt Carmel at the time but as far as I'm aware he also works out of the eye&ear

I realise this is an old (-ish) thread but wanted to post a response, as I've been on a similar search recently:

    Try: Medical Optics in Fairview.

Background: First time eye exam/potential need for glasses and want a medically trained ophthalmologist, as opposed to a Specsavers over Burger King, just because.

Contacted the Mater Private eye centre, but was informed most consultants are specialist surgeons and the waiting list is generally a few months. However, several ophthalmologists from the hospital also work in Medical Optics, in Fairview.

I have an appointment made with them and can provide feedback to anyone that needs it.
