ACIV Sequence 12: Ever A Splinter Help

I've played the game all the way through without doing any side missions (I always do them after). Now I'm horribly stuck. There are two man of wars blocking the start of this mission. My ship is nowhere strong enough to beat them and I've no money. Is there a way of getting around them to start the mission?

Can you not just select to abandon the current mission or memory sequence? Then you can do some side quests or start boarding and looting ships to get some money/resources.
