Over the years my lawn mower has lost bits here and there, most recently the actual metal chassis bust when I ran over a rather large rock. It's been in the family 20 years and I think now its time to buy a new one.

Where are there good deals on petrol lawn mowers? I want to get one that is self propelled ideally with a wide cutting base. Don't want to spend more than 250 euro if I can help..

    Any recommendations?
    Cheers

I bought this from B&Q some 5 years ago, still going strong

but you need to tell the size of garden and is it flat or hilly?

That one barely copes with my relatively flat 1/4 acre.

basically you one as powerful as you can afford, or it will struggle in wet grass or slopes. Honda or Briggs and Stratton motor

Reconditioned one is another alternative, plus, get it serviced EVERY year and it will last a lot longer

Garden is not so big, maybe 1/4 of an acre. Relatively flat. The old one is a Briggs and stratton motor, think it was branded Harry but that company is out of commission now this meant getting parts for it has been more and more difficult.

I think maybe 250 euro is too low.

I#'ve been looking in the likes of Homebase and Woodies but will probably wait for a 20% off day to buy. Are there any brands that should be avoided?

Your Harry which gave you good service cost you more than 300 punts 20 or more years ago and you are looking to spend only 250 euro on a replacement.
If you look at the numbers on the fan housing of your B&S engine will probably show you that the engine was built in the eighties. first two digits show the year of manufacture on the old engines
Go to a dealer and buy a proper alloy deck lawnmower with a premium B&S engine or something from a recognizable japanese engine.

So what is a good budget to have for the type of lawn mower I need? I don't mind spending for something that will last but don't want to go overboard.

I would strongly recommend that you AVOID B&Q, Homebase especially and Woodies.
Get your ass to a specialist dealer, spend a bit more, get after sales service, etc and save in the long run.
    I don't think €250 is enough either.
Increase your budget and you will be happier in the long run.

250 should pick you up something to suit your budjet,I got a ex demo ryobi for 160 in woodies bray.
Most mowers in that price range are for your sized garden,
If possible get a aluminum deck as it won't rot from the nitrogen in the grass.

Seen as you only use it at home I don't see a need to spend a fortune but however if you want something higher in price go for a known brand I seen a lot of crappie brands with big price tags
