Trying without success to get numbers on learning French within the Irish education system. Traditionally it was by far the most popular language offered in Irish schools. Is that still the case?

Any sources with stats, for education north and south would be appreciated.

Yep. Dunno about N. Ireland, but I can tell you that in 2011 26,766 students took Leaving Cert French (Higher and Ordinary levels combined), compared to 6,955 for German, 4,004 for Spanish, and 361 for Italian. You can get the stats for 2012 here, and probably other years via the contact form provided.
