I think your screen has gone bust.

Sorry, should have clarified. It's a dell Inspiron laptop

While holding down the "D" key, turn on the power button. The computer should run the LCD Bist instead of booting into Windows.

Try power on laptop,, hold ,press f8, key till safe mode menu appears,
    use arrows, keys, up,down,
select VGA MODE, press enter key.
    wait windows should load up,
    in low resolution mode.
MAYBE reinstall graphics card driver ,if vga mode works.

    top of keyboard f8 key.

google safe mode windows ,vga mode.

google dell uk support your laptop model,
eg inspiron 570k drivers download graphics card driver.

    click on your model no,
support, drivers , download, grahics card driver,

    download driver, install it.

IT could also be a hardware, screen problem,
    try vga safe mode first.

    http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/v/vgamode.htm

boot up laptop, press ,release, press a few times ,
stop pressing ,, when safe mode menu appears onscreen.

ON the underside of laptop, there,s a label, dell inspiron model no,
    eg model no 570jk

VGA mode is low resolution mode, enables you to do backup,s ,install drivers, acess the web,

eg icons, letters ,will appear bigger.than normal.

Post back here ,if you need more advice.
try power up, press F2 after dell logo appears,, to acess bios setup screen.
is screen normal in bios mode,
if so its likely to be a windows , software , driver problem.
What model inspiron is it you have.

    http://en.kioskea.net/faq/283-how-to-access-your-bios-setup

    or try delete key,

    look at bootup,
it might say press certain key to acess setup mode, bios menu.

    QUOTE ;
    Access
You can access the Dell Inspiron's BIOS utility by pressing the "F2" key on the laptop keyboard as soon as the laptop starts up and displays the Dell logo. If you do not press the key quickly enough, the operating system will begin to load normally. If this happens, you will need to power down the laptop and try again, pressing the F2 key as soon as you have pressed the power button.
