    Hi,

If my third year GPA is 2.43, my 4th year semester 1 GPA is 2.20 and my stage 4 GPA is 2.65.
    my 4th year semester 1 results were: E, D, C-, C, C+.

what do i need to get in semester to achieve a 2.1 degree??

    3rd year = 30%
    4th year = 70%

    Thanks very much in advance

I understand that 3rd year is worth 30% and that 4th year is worth 70%.
    But does Stage 3 = 3rd year, and Stage 4 = 4th year?

Are you in 4th year now? I don't get how you could give the Stage 4 GPA for 4th year if you haven't finished it yet.

I'd like to help you calculate what you need, but I really don't get the information you're giving me.
Why is your Stage 4 GPA different to your Semester 1 GPA?
Did you only have 5 modules? Were they all worth 5 credits? Are you doing a different number of credits in Semester 2?

Also, the Semester 1 grades you have up (E, D, C-, C, C+), give a GPA of 2.44, which is different to both the numbers you've given.

Sorry for all the questions, I just don't understand what I've been given.

    thank you beardedmaster.

ok so i did get an F in an elective module also, which i have dropped and substituted with another module.. (expensive:()

i hope this clears up your question?

all modules are 5 credits also

Ok, I now understand how the numbers you gave me were gotten.
The Semester 1 GPA is the average of the six grades you got last semester (C+, C, C-, D, E, F) - this gives 2.20.
The Stage 4 GPA is the average of the four of those grades were the modules were passed (C+, C, C-, D) - this gives 2.65.

So that means you must be doing 7 modules this semester. I'm surmising that the E grade you got last semester is being passed by compensation - if you pass 9 modules in Stage 4 overall, the E grade counts as a pass, with a GPA of 1.6.
So then Semester 1 GPA counts as 2.44, since the E is calculated with it.

Ok, so assuming the E grade from Semester 1 gets counted as a pass -
    Stage 3 (60/60 Credits completed) -> counts for 30% -> Stage GPA 2.43 -> (2.43 x 0.3) = 0.729
    Stage 4 (25/60 Credits completed) -> counts for 70% -> Semester 1 GPA 2.44 -> (2.44 x 0.7 x [25/60]) = 0.4167

    0.729 + 0.4167 = 1.1457

You have 35/60 Credits worth of Stage 4 yet to do, and Stage 4 counts for 70% in total.
To get a 2:1, you need a total GPA of over 3.08. I'm gonna mark your Semester 2 GPA this year as "?".

    1.1457 + (? x 0.7 x [35/60]) = 3.08
    (? x 0.7 x [35/60]) = 1.9343
    (35?/60) = (1.9343/0.7)
    (35?/60) = 2.763285714...
    35? = 165.79714285...
    ? = 4.7370612244897959183673469387755

So, to get a 2:1, you'd need a GPA of over 4.7 in Semester 2, which isn't possible I'm afraid.
If anyone thinks I've calculated anything incorrectly, please let me know. Best of luck in the rest of the semester regardless.

Just wondering where people heard about this 30-70 split? I was speaking to the arts program office the other week aboutthe gpa calculations and they never mentioned this to me. They said the g.p.a was calculated as the average of all of your stage 2 grade points, which would imply it is made up of years 2 and 3 evenly.

Arts is usually 50:50 but some 4 year programs in engineering and science can have a 30:70 split.

It's entirely course dependent. Commerce for example is 3 years long, the degree is calculated on a Stage 2 : Stage 3 30:70 split.
