There's one or two releases in the US I'm a little heartbroken didn't get announced for the UK (Frightened Rabbit's for example) but at the moment my wish list consists of:

Anamanaguchi - Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Video Game
Jay Z / Linkin Park - Collision Course (for the nostalgia/lols)
Liars - MESS ON A MISSION
    MGMT - Congratulations
    Public Service Broadcasting - Elfstedentocht
Twilight Sad, The - Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters

I haven't heard any gigs announced yet, is that because I haven't been paying attention or because it's all quiet on the western front? I know last year a few of us were getting rabid over the Overhead, the Albatross gig... oh the memories.

(also jealous of the US Foals release now...I wish I had an American friend now...)

RECORD STORE DAY, 19 APRIL 2014
Tower Records, Dawson St and Eason’s O’Connell St

    @TowerDublin #RSD

    100% Irish 100% Independent

This year marks the 7th year of Record Store Day and we at Tower Records are going ALL OUT! RSD’s a celebration of independent record shops where staff, customers and artists come together to promote independent music. There are special vinyl, CD releases, deadly merchandise are all made exclusively available on the day, Saturday 19 April. This year, Record Store Day will be EVEN MORE SPECIAL for us! We will be having a MASSIVE RECORD STORE DAY PARTY in our brand new shiny shop on Dawson St (there will also be RSD releases in our Eason’s, O’Connell St shop, too)

We put through our wish list of records and then, on the morning of the 19th it’ll be like Christmas Day! We RIP open the boxes, see what we’ve got, look at all the records (lovingly!) and then put them out for you. Exclusive RSD releases that are expected to fill our racks include some by artists including Oasis (Supernova), Pixies (Indie Cindy), John Grant, Damon Albarn, The Doors (Best Of), Villagers, Gil Scott Heron, Bruce Springsteen, LCD Sound System box set and many many more!

We’re going to be kicking off bright and early at 8:00am in both shops, Dawson St and Eason’s, O’Connell St! For music fans queuing up outside to be the first to get their mitts on some of the amazing RSD releases, we’ll be serving piping hot shots of espresso and other little treats to keep you going ‘til we fling open the doors and let you run riot! Once inside, apart from the array of incredible releases that are on hand, we will have a brilliant line-up of awesome artists and lots of happenings in-store! Plus, we maaaay have some special little pressies for folks who are in with us on the day..come in and find out!

To cater to your live music desires, we’ve got lots of exciting folk in to play for you upstairs in our brand-spanking-new Cafe! We will have the fantastic Lisa Hannigan in-store, she’s taken time off from working on her next album in London to come and show her support for independent record stores, PLUS she’ll be playing some tunes for you. Little Matador are taking to the stage, too! Fronted by Snow Patrol guitarist Nathan Connolly with drummer Paul ‘Binzer’ Brennan and bassist Gavin Fox (Idlewild, The Frames, Bell XI, Turn, Concerto For Constantine). Troy Stewart, (Tired Pony, The Windsor Player) and LaFaro guitarist Dave Magee complete the line up! Releasing their debut album in Ireland on 18 April, we’ll have limited edition vinyl, which they’ll be happy to sign for you! We’ve got the super-brilliant Join Me In The Pines (Dave Geraghty, Bell X 1) coming by to showcase tunes for you. Also stepping on to our stage Derry’s inimitable singer songwriter SOAK has been turning heads all over the shop, and will be turning YOUR head at our shop on RSD when she performs live!

Downstairs we will have a stall set up serving up a mouth-watering array of munchies, mini sausage rolls, mini pizzas and a whole load of cakes for a pre/post buying glucose hit. In the Café upstairs, there’ll be lots more to feast on while you check out the live acts playing and pore over your new purchases.

Of course, we will be joined by our pals in Cloney Audio, who also have a brand new store in our Dawson St. shop. They’ll be on-hand to showcase their great selection of turntables, speakers and all things hi-fi. Check ‘em out!!

We have LOTS of other news to announce over the week ahead, so keep your beady peepers peeled on @TowerDublin Twitter!
Come join the RSD party at ours! Tower Records, 7 Dawson St, Dublin 2

MDR are celebrating their birthday on RSD with Meltybrains? and Band of Clouds in the The Pavillion down in Cork and from the poster it looks like there's some sort of Pop Up Shop in the Pav on the day?

And the slightly detestable move of HMV Grafton St opening on RSD...url]http://www.irishtimes.com/culture/music/tower-records-criticises-hmv-for-record-store-day-celebration-1.1758990[/url :/ BUT if none of the RSD Official Releases grab your fancy it sounds like there'll be some bargains to be had:

    That's all I've heard about for now...and a lot of words :D

I hate the fact that vinyl is about 20-25% more expensive than it was 5 years ago despite being it more widely available.

Typical of what happens in the music industry. When I see an album I bought for 18e that now sells for 28 in the same store. I say **** that I'll buy you online or direct from the artist when they tour.

So to me RSD is a bit pointless. Sure I'm all for supporting local business but when they blatantly screw you over they don't deserve the business. Elastic Witch was the only place i would buy in Dublin for new vinyl.

Yeah, there's a bit of backlash towards RSD this year - both from consumers and Record Stores who can't shift the more expensive "exclusive releases" - especially the re releases when the same shop will have the same non-RSD LP for about a tenner less.

It's getting too big and being treated as a cash cow by record labels but I still love the excuse to get together with my friends, have a bit of a vinyl treasure hunt (successful or not) and in general have a bit of music related craic.

Any excuse to get out of the house sure! :D

Though I have limited knowledge of how vinyl distribution works I would imagine a lot of the mark up is coming from big record labels/distributors - especially when independent bands are stocked in the likes of Tower, Freebird, Elastic and that pop up shop from late last year for about a tenner?

Of course, I could be totally wrong.

It's not just against RSD that my issue is. It's in general. I'm sad to see EW go, it was generally E2/E3 cheaper for expensive vinyl from other dublin stores with much bigger budgets.

Also EW are not getting in any RDS stock especially. They are looking to get rid of all current stock, so don't go there looking for 2014 RSD exclusives!

Well on the eve of RSD this blog post would put a bitter taste in the mouth... http://www.ilikegoodmusic.com/record-store-day-2014

And this definitely gives food for thought:
    http://thequietus.com/articles/15031-record-store-day-2014-problems-distribution-vinyl

I did always wish RSD was a bit more DIY anyway, with independent, local bands releasing records or more events - in - stores focused than Vinyl releases.

Ah well, it'll still be a bit of craic.

What way do the special releases get distributed? Do stores order in whatever they want? And which of the Dublin ones is likely to have the biggest selection?

Just tryna prepare, have my eye on a few things...

    Something cool Johnny Marr wrote about record shops;

Landlords Stole My Records Off The Street

To me a record shop isn't a "specialist" shop , or a thrift store either, it's just a kind of shop, a very important kind of shop.
Record shops were meeting places where you learnt about music, clothes, style and clubs. Everyone in my town who was interesting was in the record shop at some point.
There's so much talk about the death of vinyl versus the download boom as if we all fled away from records because we love our iPods too much, but that isn't exactly the whole story.

One of the main reasons why vinyl sales have declined is because when we walk down our streets we don't see any. The greed of local councils and lease owning landlords has meant that our towns and cities have replaced the record shops (and clothes shops) we all liked with over priced sandwich shops and Bistro Bars.

All through the nineties stores that were rented and run by enthusiasts of say, photography and cameras, as well as music, got totally priced out of their premises and livelihoods, and our culture, by councils and landlords with The Next Quid and Starbucks Dollar in their eyes, it wasn't all the fault of The Megabyte and Pixel, and now what's left ?, high streets that are so expensive to rent that only the richest, and therefore blandest of commercial giants can afford to ride out the recession there; bad news for us, especially if you want a great piece of cultural art, which is what a record actually is.

Record stores aren't selling quirky old artifacts. We're starting to think of them as quirky and specialist because our greedy high street culture has told us that's the case.
If they were able to function as commercial premises on our streets then the stuff they sell would flourish, and that doesn't mean ditching our beloved iPods, It just means owning a great piece of work by our favourite band with a piece of real art on the cover, and something that actually sounds good too. Not bad for the price of two Lattes.

A bit late - but to answer your question:

Qualifying Record Stores apply to distributors for the stock they want (this is to avoid any stock shop owners feel won't have demand being sent where they won't sell).

Where orders outweigh stock the distributors make a call where to send the stock. Based on what I'm not sure.

Tower usually have the widest variety because (they claim) to order everything on the list and sit and wait to see what they get.

I don't know how that's split between Dawson St and O'Connell Towers though.

While in Freebird today I heard the manager saying he had been far more conservative with his RSD stock order this year. I don't imagine this will change next year, unless something drastic happens - or the RSD14 stock shifts fairly lively.

Something I learned today is that Golden Disks qualify for RSD but they had very limited stock.

    What goodies did everyone get?

Got the Bowie, Nirvana, Oasis - Supersonic and Villagers releases.

The Villagers one is a beautiful one, clear record too.

Cool, least I know for next year! Missed out on the new Black Angels EP, almost got Amorphous Androdgynous' The Cartel reissue but wasn't that arsed. Everything else I wanted wasn't there so I just picked up some non-RSD exclusives instead.

Humm.... I just went mental and bought tonnes of stuff mostly non RSD stuff :)
I did get the John Martyn - May you never single
Motorhead - Aftershock limited picture disk
and there seemed to be a Little Matadors LP on sale in Tower limited to 500 so I picked that up too :)
Also picked up a few bits of previous years stuff from Soundceller

What was Plug'd like? I really wanted to get in before the day was out but my bus didn't get into Cork on time :'( Did it seem busy? Did it get any decent RSD swag? :p

Anyway, here's my lot. Due to prices on the day I decided against a lot on my list and very sadly the Anamanaguchi one eluded me :'(

    pic.twitter.com/nckR9cn4Zx (hope that works)

Other than that had an awesome day. Went to every single Record store I could find (Tower (Dawson St & Easons) Sound Cellar, Golden Disks, HMV, Freebird, Mojos, Elastic Witch (RIP) ) chilled out, got lots of free snacks, talked nerdy vinyl with some people I met along the way and headed down to Cork & saw an amazing set by Meltybrains? Fun all round.

However, was it just me or were people a HELL of a lot less pleasant in the scrum this year? :(

I couldn't get into town myself but I did manage to get the Doors album, the Clutch/Lionize split single and the Temperance Movement Britpop single. I'm looking for a couple of other bits when the stuff can be sold online (have a couple of good shops that do vinyl) so should end up with most of the stuff I was after, hopefully.
