I'm looking for some advice on a new bike. Basically I injured my ankle from running so I'd like to start cycling to stay fit and it will help keep the weight off the ankle. From what I have read it seems an entry level road bike would be most suitable for me as I hope to join a cycling club, take part in some charity spins (when I become more confident and experienced) and cycle to work maybe 2 days per week, when I know I won't have to travel far for meetings etc.

I had a quick look in some local bike shops and was recommended the following:

    1) Cube Axail WLS €899

    2) Fuji Finest 1.5 €830

    3) Scott Contessa Speedster 50 €869

    4) Felt Z95 €799
    http://www.feltbicycles.com/Ireland/...eries/Z95.aspx

    5) Halfords recommended a full carbon bike, a Boardman, on sale for €1075. I can't find the link but basically it's last years with a good frame according to the sales person but the components wouldn't be as good but she did say they can up upgraded.

    Additional:

I'm hoping to avail of the BTW scheme.
I'd prefer to purchase from a local specialist bike shop rather than a high street store like Halfords.
Also, would a female specific bike be more suitable than a unisex one?
How long does it usually take to get used to drop bars? I've only ever cycled mountain bikes.
What are the key things to look out for when purchasing your first road bike?

    Any advice is much appreciated
    Regards,

Well, based on those links you'll have no other choice but to go for the Fuji :pac:

No time at all for me. I was just surprised at how fast and nimble the bike seemed.

Also, three of your links aren't working.

    Regards,

I'll answer the easy part now because it's late. No, a women's specific bike isn't going to be any better, I personally feel it's a marketing ploy.

Roughly it'll probably take about two weeks until you're totally at one with your bike. You'll worry about things like the skinny tires, the bumpy feel in the saddle, the weird bars etc...... all of these things will become the stuff you'll love about your bike after about a week or two, why? Because you'll be able to cycle travel faster and further with less effort than ever before. Seriously, you won't believe how fast it'll feel like your going in the first few days that you have it.

by FAR the most important thing about your bike is that it fits your body measurements. It has to be the right size, the saddle has to be the correct height, the bars have to be the correct distance from the saddle etc. You should get a bike fit when your buying your bike to make sure it fits you perfectly.... Also get something that looks nice. Nobody wants an ugly bike ;)

Thanks, unfortunately the bikes are in 3 different shops in Galway and not all are up on the websites so for convenience I just posted any link so the spec could be seen :)

Sorry just read that 3 links are not working! Silly me... it's getting late. Will post new one's shortly and hope they work
