You trying to calculate something for betting?

No. I am proposing a modelling project.

The aim of this project is to examine the distribution of senior success, given the prior minor and U-21 success.

Sounds interesting. Would be interested in hearing about it when done.

gaainfo.com had reams of info one time, shut down a few years now but you can still access it using archive.org or similar, e.g.:

    https://web.archive.org/web/20120419125308/http://www.gaainfo.com:80/

Hopefully someone hear has the info in more usable format.

From searching through the pages of this thread I understand that a book my an L O'Dare was the source of much of the data. I suppose I must wait for Laoisman to come back on this thing.

Yep, L O'Dare has a series of books on Amazon available to buy (link here, but I'm not sure if minor/U21 was included).

He was posting here before but I'm not sure if he is still around.

You will find plenty of information on the winners of the provincial championships on the websites of the provinces, but if you try to go deeper, information is scarce.

Trying to factor in underage success was something I had considered for my model as well, to try to "point" the model in the right direction, if indeed, a correlation does exist. Didin't have time to get around to it, unfortunately, but I am interested to see what you come up with.

Off we go again on another merry go-round of agony and ecstasy wondering whether life can get much better or much worse.

Following on from previous years, I have ranked teams in each division based on their rating points. This has been previously shown to give some indication of whether a team will finish in relegation/promotion territory.

    2018 NFL
    Div 1| Rating| Div 2| Rating| Div 3| Rating| Div 4| Rating
    Dublin | 111|Roscommon|91|Armagh|91|Carlow|73
    Mayo |104|Cork|88|Westmeath|81|Laois|73
    Kerry|101|Tipperary|85|Derry|79|Antrim|69
    Tyrone|100|Clare|85|Longford|78|Limerick|65
    Monaghan|93|Meath|83|Sligo|77|Leitrim|65
    Galway|93|Down|82|Fermanagh|75|Waterford|57
    Kildare|90|Cavan|82|Offaly|73|Wicklow|56
    Donegal|88|Louth|69|Wexford|71|London|54
    • Division 1 appears to consist of a top 4 and a bottom 4 and frankly it would be very surprising if any of the top 4 dropped down.
    • In Division 2, Louth might appear to be outside their comfort zone, but some tasty clashes with near neighbours may keep them in the hunt longer than might be expected. Other than that, it is all to play for.
    • Armagh hold a heady lead at the top of Division 3 but behind them, there promises to be many dog-fights in the battles for promotion and to avoid relegation.
    • Division 4 appears to be a more balanced affair, at least between the top 5. Sadly, the bottom 3 have little to play for.

Previous year's finishes: tables are sorted by rating or ranking position prior to start of the league, colour indicate top 2 finish (green) or bottom 2 finish (red)

Last year, I had remarked that Connacht teams appear to be quite happy in their respective divisions. Another trend is developing - the tendency of Munster teams to finish in the top 2 of their respective league.

    Finishes per province (2013-2017 combined)

    Province| Top 2 | Bottom 2
    Leinster | 15 | 19
    Ulster | 13 | 12
    Connacht | 3 | 7*
    Munster | 9 | 2
*Connacht's 7 bottom 2 finishes are not helped by London finishing last in Div 4 during each of the last 5 years.

Great stuff as always, I look forward to another year of posts like "how can so and so be above so and so", and "I put e50 of suchband such to win and they lost, these rankings are stupid"

But one point, you say that you would be surprised if any of the Top 4 got relegated.

I'd think Mayo and Kerry might be in danger here.
They usually get off to poor starts.
Teams like Monaghan come to the league far better prepared for it early on than the latter two.
Donegal will be building on a young team from last year.
Galway will want to prove a point.

So for Mayo and Kerry it may be a nervous time for a lot of the league.

Interesting that in every one of those years (bar one) Waterford were ranked in the bottom two in division 4, but didn't actually finish in the bottom 2 in any of those years.
In fact Waterford haven't finished in the bottom two in division 4 since the league was restructured in 2008.

And have a better manager to boot.

Hopefully the Keepers manage to fall by the wayside. Clifford needs a couple of years in Division 2 I reckon.

Usually during the week after, he's generally quite prompt with the updates.

Back for another season and looking forward to see the evolutions over the year ahead – can Dublin be shifted from the number 1 spot? Can the top 4 be broken into by one of the Super 8? Can Laois drop any lower??

The moves won’t be as radical in the league compared to the championship but a series of wins or losses can all add up!

It’s going to be an intense few weeks with the league and everything else going on in life, apologies if the updates are slow in coming.

Highlights from Round 1 of the NFL:
    • Tipp gained 2.68 rating points and leap-frog Cork after a fine win by the Lee
    • Longford also had a good away win over Offaly, gaining them 2 rating points
    • Galway almost achieved 2 rating points with their solid win over Tyrone
    • The only teams that changed more than 1 ranking position were Laois and Offaly, who pivoted around Carlow
    • There are minor differences (generally within 0.02 rating points) compared to the table at the end of 2017 - these are probably rounding errors that I will eventually get around to rectifying one day

    • Most games during week 2 of the NFL involved very closely ranked teams, and as a result, 15 of the 16 games played resulted in some rating points exchange – the exception was the Cavan-Louth game
    • Cork, Kerry and London all gained more than 2 rating points, at the expense of Down, Mayo and Wicklow, respectively
    • Kerry and Mayo swap positions in the top 3 while the gap between Tyrone and the chasing pack of Galway, Monaghan, Armagh and Roscommon tightens

Didnt realise new posters wernt welcome

    New posters are always welcome.

It's just that criticising the ranking table in such a fashion is really unwarranted given the science and the effort that goes into it on behalf of Laoisman.

Just to come in and go "How the f**k are X above Y" is a bit useless for all concerned.

Bull**** dont try retract your statement slagging me off for only having 5 posts, seemingly its "Gas" thats an indication new posters arent welcome.
I never read the science that goes into it, I clicked into thread and went to last page seen the table and called out the way off the mark ranking regardless of what time goes into it.

You came in here with no prior history and rubbished a well-known and appreciated and understood thread. By all means come in and talk about it. But don't go off on one with your first post. It's bizarre and hardly conducive to proper debate.

So yeah, your post count matters in so far as you're green around the ears in the GAA fora and it is "gas" that you made no effort to understand the "way off the mark" rankings before criticising them.

I'd say there are more than a few people wondering how Armagh are ahead of their respective counties (I did too, initially). However, I understand the system and how it works, and fair play to Laoisman for his efforts with it. It's just one of those anomalies.

It's easy to look at Armagh being stuck in Division 3 for the past few seasons and saying there's no way that they can be as high up the table as they are, but that's the beauty of the scoring system. Armagh might be a Division 3 side, but they won 4 championship games in 2017, beating Fermanagh, Westmeath, Tipperary and Kildare, the latter 2 of whom are operating in higher divisions this year.

Armagh being in Division 3 after a freak score v Tipp is what makes it look more WTF than it should be.

That they beat them in the Championship is the true worth of them. Though, their showing v Tyrone was the limit. They'll sail into Division 2 this year.

    • Galway’s win over Mayo gained them 1.87 rating points as they look to break into the top 4
    • Honorable mention to Wicklow who increased their worth by 1.5 rating points following their draw in Antrim

We managed to go up without playing. This could be the way forward for us.

    • The biggest shock to the system this week was Galway’s win over Kerry in Killarney, a win which propels Galway ahead of Kerry in the rankings. Galway have not seen 3rd place since July 2007 while Kerry have not been outside the top 3 since June 2014
    • Galway are the most improved team since the start of the league with 7.13 rating points gained
    • Leitrim, Cavan, Clare and Monaghan also increased their rating points totals after good wins
    • Cork drop out of the top 12 for the first time since 2004, having dropped 4 places after their home loss to Cavan

Some interesting developments! Good to see teams like Galway, Cavan, Rossies, Clare, Fermanagh, Armagh and Tipp venturing outside the safety zone favoured by some. Meath for example are complete enigma. Looked like one of favourites to be promoted, now probably need another win to be safe.
