Question there for Laoisman11: Seeing as Leitrim have officially conceded their game with London will this effect the ranking of either of these teams or do the games actually have to be played?

I see that depending on results this weekend there maybe a number of games that will not be played, I presume these games will be just be void rather than walkovers being given.

With regard to the ranking system I say its excellent and well done to you for putting in the work in putting it together and keeping it updated. Like all ranking systems and tables around the world in different sports they have their flaws but I as a GAA ranking system this would is well worked out and obviously has the past records taken into account and its commendable to you for the work involved in it. Well done and keep up the good work.

There used to be a hurling ranking table, but I have not seen it updated this year. It would be interesting to see this now following the recent league results and also with the new hurling championship format it would bode well to have a look and compare where teams stood.

Thanks for the words of encouragement!

Regarding the Leitrim-London tie (and other possible unplayed games as the GAA attempt to tidy up this mess), the ranking system does not take into account games that are abandoned or given as walkovers.

Somebody was going to take up the hurling table, but it's tough for lads to find the time I guess. Check out the hurling thread to see if you can encourage them into action!

I took on the task to do the hurling rankings from Hanalei. I'm endeavouring to get it up ASAP but college commitments as they are... you know yourself.

Anyway, hurling rankings coming to a thread near you.... soon...

Many changes after this weekends bag of shocks and treats……
    • Offaly were by far the biggest winners, taking 4.29 rating points off Westmeath after a bonus point win on the road
    • Two teams, Monaghan and Wexford, picked up 3 rating points with unlikely wins over already promoted opponents
    • Fermanagh’s win over Longford resulted in them jumping 3 places in the table
    • Kerry hit 5th position, a place that they have not seen since 2014
    • More remarkably, Derry drop to 23rd. They have not been so low since 1984.

You take exception with that but not the ranking of Tyrone and especially Galway? A win over Dublin is always going to give them a boost here. Give it til August and teams will generally be where they're supposed to be. Some people will still give out though I'm sure!

laoisman11 told me he gave Galway extra points on the sly because he reckons we'll win Sam and retain Liam this year.

Please syferus, don't spontaneously combust out of Rossie rage :pac:

Your sarcasm detector is fine, it's just that sarcams does not work on the internet, no matter how hard one tries.

Anyway great work again laoisman11, will be interesting to see how those places change as the summer goes on.

Another competition over, the Dubs champs again, and head and shoulders above all other teams in the ratings. I will do up a league review in the coming weeks when I get a bit of time. Congrats also to Roscommon, Armagh and Laois on their trophies.

As promised, a look back over the league and an opportunity to see changes in rankings and more importantly ratings, from the end of last year's SFC.

Of course, there is always somewhat of "no **** Sherlock" to some of the changes, as the teams that did well were invariably in league finals, whereas those that did poorly often suffered relegation.

And so to the bigly winners and bigly losers....

    Winners
    1. Galway had a great run all the way to the league final, despite being tipped for relegation by many. 8.63 rating points and 3 ranking places gained and currently in 2nd place, their summer bodes well
    2. Monaghan's impressive gain of 7.12 rating points is partly due to their win over an already league final-qualified Dublin, but they also had good wins over Kerry, Tyrone and Donegal
    3. Fermanagh gained 6.35 rating points despite losing the league final to Armagh, with whom they will renew acquaintance in the first round of the Ulster SFC
    4. Laois were the only team with a 100% record in the league, and in doing so, gained 4.89 rating points
    5. Cavan bounced back to Division 1 and picked up 4.44 rating points along the way in addition to jumping 6 places in the rankings

    Losers
    1. It might be a surprise for many, but Mayo were the big losers of the league, dropping 7.31 rating points and 4 ranking places. It would have been a lot worse only for a narrow win over Monaghan and a jail-break against Donegal
    2. Kildare endured a tough Division 1 experience, dropping 4.60 rating points while failing to pick up any league points
    3. Limerick had a poor year by their standards, only getting 1 win and a draw in Division 4. 4.52 rating points were lost in the process
    4. Derry's relegation shocked many, but they were not far off this level. A decrease of 4.29 rating points, can they turn their year around in the championship?
    5. Sitting just above the relegation zone in Division 2, Cork had a disappointing league and will be hoping for better fare as the days get longer. 3.27 rating points dropped

A new dawn arrives, Super 8's (and a not-so-super 25) will add extra intrigue to this year's championship.

Those nice PDF files that I was churning out last year do not appear so nice this year due to some bugs somewhere that I don't have time to rectify at the moment.

In the meantime, ye will just have to do with the prediction model output for this weekend and the following weekend (as I am off on me holliers).......Good luck to all !!!

    Sunday, 6th May
    Connacht SFC Quarter Finals
London v Sligo, Ruislip, 3.30pm- Sligo by 9
New York v Leitrim, Gaelic Park, 7.15pm- Leitrim by 1

    Saturday, 12th May
    Leinster SFC Round 1
Wexford v Laois, Wexford Park, 6.30pm- Laois by 2

    Sunday, 13th May
    Connacht SFC Quarter Final
Mayo v Galway, MacHale Park, 4pm- Draw

    Leinster SFC Round 1`
    Carlow v Louth, O'Moore Park, 2pm- Louth by 2

Who does the Delphi oracle predict wins the replay?:)

I don't know what it is but I fancy New York to beat Leitrim.

Hands-up for an error on my side.......in the very first round of league games, the code did not pick up that Cork were at home to Tipp and that Louth were at home to Down. Now that this has been fixed, the rating points of the 4 teams involved in this cock-up have been modified and to a lesser extent the rating points of some teams that they played afterwards have also changed.

The correct table for the end of the league is below; I will post the ratings after the first 2 weekends of the championship in the next post.

We couldn't say that the opening of this year's SFC has been non-eventful!!
    • The largest points exchanged were in the Offaly-Wicklow game with 6 rating points switching hands. Another point from Wicklow during the game and they would have increased this to 9 rating points due to the bonus applied for when teams win by more than 5 points
    • Donegal were the next big winners taking 3.09 rating points from Cavan and finding themselves in the top 8; Cavan fall 5 places in a heavily-congested mid-table
    • Carlow continue their good form with a win over Louth, making up for their losses to Laois in the league
    • Galway slip into 2nd spot, while Laois and Leitrim added to their totals

    Finally got the bugs sorted.

Attached is the PDF file showing the recent form of each team in this weekend's games, their recent and league championship encounters, plus the output of the prediction model.

I don't have much time for analysis but these are the main points as I see them:
    • Limerick are on a terrible run of form, but they seem to keep some steel for their neighbours
    • Fermanagh appear to have a bit of form, it will be interesting to see if they can put up to Armagh
    • A nice correlation between rating point difference and scoring difference between Tyrone and Monaghan

    tl;dr
    Clare by 6.1
    Tipp by 10.9
    Armagh by 1.9
    Tyrone by 2.2

4 games this weekend, 2 of which had a significant bearing on the overall rankings, 2 of which changed nothing..........
    • Fermanagh gained the most this weekend, exchanging 4.08 rating points with Armagh. Armagh just about maintain their position in 9th while Fermanagh jump a massive 6 places and both now join a hugely contested mid-table where less than 2 rating points separates 9th from 15th
    • Monaghan made a serious statement of intent going to Omagh and getting the win. They move up to 3rd and take almost 4 rating points from Tyrone
    • No rating points were exchanged in the Tipp-Waterford nor Limerick-Clare games

A quiet weekend with only 8 games up for contention.
    • Leitrim have not beaten Roscommon since 2000 in the championship; since then, the Rossies have put them out 8 times. The same trend is likely to continue here
    • Cork's recent form has been hugely erratic, while since 2014 Tipp have managed to put up a good showing against them, even if it has not always translated into victory
    • Since 2000, the record stands at Westmeath 5, Laois 1 with 1 draw in league and championship games combined
    • Even if Kildare might have been disappointed to be relegated from Division 1, they were hugely consistent and are unlikely to be the first Kildare team since 1962 to fall to Carlow
    • Division 1 champions meet the bottom of Division 4. Dublin have never lost to Wicklow in league (18 games*) or championship (7 games*)
    • Longford and Meath have only clashed 5 times since Longford's last victory over them in 1982; overall, Meath seem to have the upper-hand
    • Derry's previous 7 games with Donegal have ended in defeat, and while both teams were relegated in the league, there was a gulf of class between the levels

    *based on results since 1925

    tl;dr
    Down by 4.5
    Roscommon by 8.2
    Cork by 0.3
    Laois by 1.1
    Kildare by 5.9
    Dublin by 17.1
    Meath by 3.3
    Donegal by 3.1

Some games went totally to plan this weekend, others however……..
    • An incredible win for Carlow over Kildare gains them 7.38 rating points; they leap 6 ranking places to 16th, where they have not been since 1979!
    • Kildare meanwhile drop a huge 10 places, completely skipping over that congested mid-table. It is their lowest position since 2008
    • Three teams rise 5 places: Cork after their bonus point win over Tipp in Semple; Laois after a bonus point win over Westmeath; and Longford who just about got over Meath. The losers drop 6, 3 and 3 ranking places, respectively.
    • Donegal and Down picked up minor increases following their wins over Derry and Antrim
    • No points were exchanged following the Dublin – Wicklow game

I presume no points were exchanged in Roscommon Leitrim game too?

I presume no points were exchanged in Roscommon Leitrim game too?

Correct, there was/is 26 rating points difference between them, 23 as the game was played in Carrick. There would have to be a difference of less than 15 rating points for the favourites to pick up points should they win. The underdogs will always pick up points if they win or draw.
