And so it ends, as it began, with Dublin as All-Ireland champions.

Congratulations to an outstanding team who have broken the all-time record for the number of rating points amassed!

I am pretty busy over the next few weeks, but I will get back with an end of year review before Christmas.

The dust has settled; time to look back on how each team evolved in a year of a new championship structure, albeit one with a familiar outcome.

    Biggest winners:
    • Laois - 13.17 rating points gained and a jump of 13 in the rankings reflect promotion from Division 4 and a run to the Leinster final. Their 2 losses in the championship did not negatively affect their ratings, so their gains are somewhat exaggerated
    • Monaghan - 11.52 rating points and a ranking increase of 2. Monaghan will be happy in some ways with their season even if there remain some "what ifs". Highest end of year finish since 1985
    • Fermanagh - 8.92 rating points and 6 places gained in the rankings following promotion from Division 3 and a run to the Ulster final
    • Tyrone - Almost matching Fermanagh's increase, Tyrone gained 8.91 rating points, despite being the first team to lose 3 matches in a championship season
    • Honorable mentions: Donegal, Galway and Carlow (best year since 1964) all gained more than 7 rating points during the course of 2018

    Biggest losers:
    • Mayo - A whisker away from relegation, a first-round Connacht championship defeat to Galway and not making the last 8 (first time since 2010) resulted in a loss of 13.28 rating points and a drop of 5 in the rankings. Mayo have ground to make up in 2019
    • Wexford - Relegation from Division 3 and losing to Waterford in the qualifiers set Wexford up for a heavy fall. 9.6 rating points and 4 ranking places dropped. They have not been so low since 1999
    • Derry - Nowhere lower for Derry to go in 2019.....9.21 rating points dropped on the way to Division 4 and 0 from 2 in the championship. It is 52 years since they were so low in the rankings
    • Honorable mentions: Westmeath and Tipperary will look back on 2018 with regret

Can Dublin make it 6 from 7? Can Mayo avoid the drop? Who will be relegated from Division 2? Can Laois and Carlow make promotion for a second year running? And will Derry start the long journey from bottom back to top?

Following on from previous years, I have ranked teams in each division based on their rating points. This has been previously shown to give some indication of whether a team will finish in relegation/promotion territory.

    2019 NFL
    Div 1| Rating| Div 2| Rating| Div 3| Rating| Div 4| Rating
    Dublin | 114|Donegal|95|Laois|86|Leitrim|70
    Tyrone |106|Kildare|90|Carlow|80|Derry|70
    Monaghan|104|Armagh|87|Longford|80|Antrim|66
    Kerry|100|Cork|86|Down|77|Waterford|63
    Galway|100|Clare|84|Sligo|74|Wexford|61
    Mayo|91|Fermanagh|84|Westmeath|72|Limerick|61
    Roscommon|88|Meath|80|Offaly|72|Wicklow|61
    Cavan|85|Tipperary|78|Louth|63|London|52

    • Apart from the near-certainty of Dublin finishing in the top 2, it is extremely difficult to gauge where teams will finish in Division 1. Tyrone, Monaghan, Kerry and Galway would be happy with solid league campaigns and unearthing of 2 or 3 new faces; Mayo may need a greater overhaul. New managers in Cavan and Roscommon may help their chances, but they will be under severe pressure.
    • In Division 2, Donegal and Kildare should be strong favourites to bounce back but I would expect Armagh and Meath to throw a few shocks. Clare and Fermanagh for the drop?
    • Laois are somewhat over-inflated at 86 rating points and little seperates them from Carlow, Longford and maybe Down. Louth look destined for relegation with one of Sligo, Westmeath or Offaly to join them
    • Division 4 appears to be a three-horse race between Leitrim, Derry and Antrim. The others, unfortunately, do not have much prospects of a promotion place.

Previous year's finishes: tables are sorted by rating or ranking position prior to start of the league, colour indicate top 2 finish (green) or bottom 2 finish (red)

Last year, I noted the tendency of Munster teams to finish in the top 2 of their respective league. This was turned on its head in 2018 with no Munster team being promoted or relegated, and with Waterford finishing bottom of Division 4.

    Finishes per province (2013-2018 combined)

    Province| Top 2 | Bottom 2
    Leinster | 18 | 23
    Ulster | 16 | 15
    Connacht | 5 | 7*
    Munster | 9 | 3
*Connacht's 7 bottom 2 finishes are not helped by London finishing last in Div 4 during 5 of the last 6 years.

The great thing about the league is that after every round of games, almost every team has gained/lost something.
    • Monaghan picked up 2.22 rating points from Dublin with an excellent win in Clones
    • Wicklow’s slender win in Waterford gains them 2.03 rating points and they jump 3 places in the table
    • Westmeath, Kerry, Derry and Laois all picked up more than 1 rating point
    • The Galway-Cavan game was the only game that did not result in an exchange of rating points
    • Wexford have dropped to their lowest ranking since 1973!

Poor old Wexicans. The last team to nearly Dublin in Leinster. Sad to see.

    Excellent stuff laoisman11.

I note that we (Armagh) actually gained points but fell in the rankings. Is that unusual?

Do you mind me asking what position were Wexford in then? The reason I ask is that there was a list produced (I think) by the Indo around then and Armagh I recall were second last and only Wexford were beneath them. That was considered a pivotal moment in Armagh GAA history as it moved a group of leading figures within our County to come together and do something about it. Our fortunes were reversed and led us to winning our first Ulster title and first All Ireland Final appearance in 24 years. We've remained competitive ever since.

No, it happens fairly regularly, and is due to a lower placed team gaining more rating points than the team above them.

Armagh and Wexford seemed to have had quite overlapping success between 1950 to the late 1970's, chasing each other to the bottom. Armagh's recovery was spectacular, although Wexford did manage to pip them somewhere around 2008/2009, before starting on their current descent.....

Bigger movement this week with some minor shocks:
    • Mayo took the maximum 4.5 rating points away from their trip to Omagh and begin the climb (back towards the top?)
    • Roscommon and Louth both picked up 3 rating points with excellent wins over Monaghan and Laois, respectively
    • Honorable mentions to Limerick, Down, Kildare and Offaly who all gained more than 1 rating point

More shocks, twists and turns and we are not even at Valentines day......
    • The big winners at the weekend were London! Not many would have guessed that, but their bonus-point win over Wexford gains them 3.52 rating points; another win would take them out of last place
    • Tipp knocked 3 goals past Donegal and picked up 3 rating points in the process
    • Meath, Louth, Galway, Kerry and Longford all increased their stock by more than 2 rating points
    • Clare and Fermanagh both jumped 4 places in the rankings, with Cork dropping to their lowest point since June 2003

How long Leitrim were at that rating?

How long Leitrim were at that rating?

I'm not understanding your question......care to expand?

I assume he meant London maybe?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 751 ✭✭✭Perifect

No. He meant that he thought Leitrim would have had a big rise up the rankings with their recent victories but he was shocked to see that they were already ranked in the mid twenties. He wants to know how they got up that high.

Still shocking to see the plight of Wexford. Must be their worst ever standing in football?

Are Dublin so far ahead that a 1 point away loss costs them 2.16 points?
What would they need to do to get this points back. Huge win vs Mayo this weekend?

Dublin won't get anything if they beat Mayo, even if they win by more than 5 points.

As things stand, they will pick up 0.21 rating points if they beat Tyrone by more than 5. Should they make a league final and beat one of the top teams, they might gain another fraction of a point, but they will probably have to wait until the away game of the Super 8s to pick up anything else.

Life at the top is tough!

Lots of movement again this weekend, with the Dublin-Mayo game the only one that did not result in some exchange of rating points.
    • Down gained 3 rating points and jump 4 places to 16th after an excellent win over Longford
    • Waterford took 2.77 rating points from Wexford while showing that goals do win games
    • Cavan’s much needed first league win gives them 2.73 rating points at Roscommon’s expense
    • Fermanagh, Meath, Westmeath, Louth, Offaly and Tyrone all gained more than 2 rating points
    • Cork have fallen to their lowest level since May of 1943!

    • Wexford were by far the biggest winner this weekend, taking 2.47 rating points from Wicklow in an away win
    • Westmeath’s big win over Sligo gained them 1.76 rating points and they climb 3 places in the rankings
    • A last-gasp penalty adds 1.58 rating points to Meath’s tally at Kildare’s expense
    • A surprise win for Cork over Tipperary resulted in 1.72 rating points being exchanged
    • Finally, Waterford have hit heights not seen since 2012 after an unexpected win over Antrim

Shocks were slow arriving Saturday, but things livened up big time Saturday evening!
    • Away wins over favourites Kerry and Dublin result in Mayo and Tyrone gaining 2.99 and 2.65 rating points each, respectively
    • Armagh’s big victory over Fermanagh gains them 2.36 rating points; Fermanagh fall 4 places as a result in but there is little to separate 8th from 13th
    • Meath move into the top 8 for the first time since 2015; they have moved up an incredible 8 ranking places since the start of the league!

Plenty of movement again this week; God, I love the league!
    • A huge surprise in Newry sees Louth taking 3 rating points from Down whose promotion chances are now scuppered (while Louth have another bite at that cherry)
    • Cork’s away win was in vain as they dropped to Division 3; 2.48 rating points were exchanged as a result
    • Kerry now have the chance to overtake Tyrone and move into second place if they can overcome Mayo in the Division 1 final

Just a thought if it's not much trouble laoisman - it might be interesting to have a 'start of year rating' column.

Anyway, looking back at the end of last year the Dubs have lost 7 ranking points while Mayo have gained 9. Makes for an interesting couple of months before the matches at the sharp end to see whether Dublin have come back to the pack a bit or if they really are still eating ice creams from their holliers.

They did, but they had only featured in 5 of the previous 25 Munster finals, so they were not exactly on a high in May of 1943!

I will do up an end of league review that will cover that - there is too much movement from week to week to make it particularly relevant.

Congrats to Mayo, great to see them winning at Croke Park, hopefully it will give them a taste for it!
    • Mayo move back into the top 4 after an absence of over 12 months and garner 2 rating points from Kerry.
    • Both Donegal and Derry picked up 1.2 rating points in their league final wins over Meath and Leitrim, respectively.
    • Westmeath drop 0.26 rating points after drawing with Louth (Westmeath were considered the stronger team and were expected to win!)

I am off on my hols from next Saturday, so there will be a week’s delay before there is an update after the Division 3 league final.

An end of league review will follow …………….

Congrats to Westmeath for their victory in the final game of the National Football League 2019! They take 2.06 rating points from Laois and the teams now find themselves ranked side by side; the upcoming championship meeting will put some distance between the sides.

I think this table is the perfect illustration of the path that football should take. A 3 tiered league, with 10 in each of the top 2 divisions and the remainder in the 3rd division. No league finals, winner at the top come final game.
Relegation and promotion of two teams per division after the league with the incentive that if you are in the top two divisions you get to play in the all Ireland. If you end up in division 3 after the league ends you play for 2nd tier championship with the final played as curtain raiser to the second all Ireland semi final. Everyone has the chance to play for the all Ireland in a given year but form will dictate if you deserve to.

Changing the football league is nonsense.

It's currently a lovely succinct championship and in fact at this stage most football fans, except Galwegians, recognise it as the superior graded competition.

    Leave well enough alone.

You want to grade the championship? Top 16 in the league at the end of each April will soon see it take on an even more importance.

An interesting league overall, with Dublin failing to win it, Mayo’s resurgence, Meath’s revival, Cork’s decline and Carlow’s rising going into reverse.

Could the championship provide as much excitement? Will the top 8 make it into the Super 8s? In any case, there will be plenty more movement in the rankings as the stakes are higher!

    Big winners
    • Mayo gained 10.45 rating points and 3 ranking places as they finally won a final in Croke Park
    • Louth were perhaps surprisingly the second biggest winners, increasing their worth by 10.07 rating points, losing out on promotion by a whisker
    • 9.13 rating points and an incredible 8 ranking places for Meath as they topped Division 2
    • Westmeath acquired 8.38 rating points on the way to promotion to Division 2 and a Division 3 title
    • Honorable mention to Derry who moved up 6 ranking places after their successful Division 4 campaign

    Biggest losers
    • 0 from 7 in Division 3 means Sligo lost 8.40 rating points and 5 ranking places
    • 3 losses in Division 1 means Dublin dropped 7.03 rating points, even if they hold onto the number 1 spot
    • Monaghan gave up 6.73 rating points and 3 ranking places as they lost 5 from 7 games but still managed to maintain Division 1 status
    • Honorable mentions to both Laois and Carlow who each dropped 5 ranking places (Laois started the year from a very high base which partly explains this loss; they are probably at a more realistic rank now)

    1 | Dublin | -7.03 | 0
