interesting reading, hard to believe Donegal had their lowest ever ranking the same year we won our first ulster title! and we thought jim worked wonders!

altho still on us, didnt think you had us as no1 in 2015, should be 2014?

    Fantastic work though!

    Cheers!

I took a look at Donegal's record there:

Looks like ye had a savage run in '72
    • Ulster q-final: Beat Down who were 16.45 rating points superior
    • Ulster s-final: Drew with Cavan who were 9.64 rating points superior
    • Ulster s-final replay: Beat Cavan by 5 points
    • Ulster final: Beat Tyrone by 5 (roughly equal on rating points)
    • All-Ire s-final: Lost to Offaly by 4 (they were rated a huge 21.98 rating points superior to ye)

Hard to believe that ye only won ye're first Ulster in '72......

From this year's results, as the League is now weighted more heavily than previously, Kerry's hammering on the opening day of the league meant that they dropped a lot of points, and that Donegal, who were sitting in 2nd place after the All-Ireland defeat, jumped into first. It only lasted for a week though!

Should Croke Park be treated as a home venue for Dublin in the All-Ireland semi-finals and finals when it is a neutral venue for everyone else?

No problem with Croke Park being treated as a home venue for Dublin in matches up until then but it seems that there is an in-built penalty for Dublin all the time.

It could also be said that there is an in-built advantage for Dublin all the time in playing semi-finals and finals in a venue that was considered a home venue for them in previous matches..........

Superb work, the GAA could do worse than pay you to keep that ranking table updated on their website.

I wouldn't a mind a terrace ticket now and again, although Laois doesn't get much of a run in Croke Park these days.

I was hoping to set up an interactive page where people could select individual teams and compare rankings and all that. I had it lined up to do using shiny server (if any of ye knows that service) but they've changed the conditions so that now there is a maximum level of activity permitted per app (50h per month). To go beyond that involves dinero; I've also a feeling that they will be changing their conditions again soon as they are in development........It was a good option as it ties in well with the R software (which is the only bit of programming I can manage!). So I'm afraid that idea won't see the light of day, unless the GAA want to come in on it of course!!

To be honest, I'd get in touch with them if I were you. Approach their Marketing Manager or whoever is the most relevant person. It would be a big addition to their website. They could also promote it through their Facebook and Twitter pages as often as you update the table.

Have to agree with this, it would make a great addition to their site and maybe it could be incorporated into the app at some stage!

Sorry for going off topic a bit, but they literally came out of nowhere that year. Brian McEniff recalled playing Sligo to see who was the worst team in Ireland, nobody wanted the management job and he became player/manager and won 2 Ulsters in 3 years.

Cavan play Monaghan in a few weeks, currently Monaghan (6) are ranked eleven places above cavan (17). I'm just wondering are there many examples where a team ranked that much lower than their opponents have managed to upset the odds and win a championship match?

Possibly Monaghan themselves did this when they beat Armagh in 2003, when Armagh were AI champions, and reached the AI final that year.

But the number of ranking places is one thing, the score another, there could be a number of teams separated by very little in the middle of the rankings.
For instance, Cavan are closer to Laois, 3 places above them, as they are to Fermanagh one place below them.

Edit: I see the wiki page has a greatest shocks section, by rating points difference. Well done Laoisman!
Those games generally have a gap of about 15 points, not unlike Cavan and Monaghan, but 12 June 1983, Ulster SFC Ballybofey Donegal (75.39) 1-10 Armagh (97.19) 0-07 has a much greater gap. Armagh would need to watch out for first round games in Ulster, 1978 against Cavan wasn't exactly expected either.

Donegal have had little competition this decade in the Ulster championship people fail to realise.

I'm going to be tied up later this week so thought I'd get the predictions out of the way early.

I have been playing around with a glm model to forecast results, to date I'm looking at an r2 of > 0.40, which appears to be the benchmark for many sports predictive models. What the r2 of >0.4 means in effect is that the model can forecast results with an accuracy of +/- 4 points, 50% of the time. In other words, 50% of the time, the results will be out by more than 4 points! So there isn't enough confidence to suggest that we could give up the day job and take to gambling for a living!!

What I have found though, during the league, is that there may be value to be had where the model is predicting a result 3 or more points different to the spread offered by the bookies. That conversation is probably more suited to the gambling thread than to here.

Five games to kick start the SFC (after Galway's win over NY) this weekend.

Offaly (73.97, at home) vs Longford (73.83)
Following the League final, we could expect Longford to be much more frugal in the tighter confines of O'Connor Park. There is very little to separate these teams on rating points, however home advantage should be enough to swing it the Faithful's way. Offaly by 1

Carlow (60.92, at home) vs Laois (81.92)
A huge gulf in class in terms of rating points. Carlow had a poor league and have lost one of their bigger names recently. Laois's league campaign stuttered and started and they did just enough to stay in Division 2. Historically, Laois do very well against Carlow in Carlow, whereas Carlow do well against Laois in Portlaoise. Carlow venue: Laois by 9

Leitrim (69.31, at home) vs Galway (85.46)
Both teams had some close calls during their league campaigns with both claiming 4 victories and managing mid-table finishes. Galway do seem to be operating at a higher level than Leitrim though and are fancied to win this well. Galway by 8

Louth (71.67, at home) vs Westmeath (73.41)
The similarities to the Leitrim-Galway encounter continue here: both teams had poor leagues, winning 2 games and being relegated to Division 4 and 3, respectively. Nevertheless, there is very little between the teams in terms of rating points (especially taking home advantage into account). Louth by 1

Donegal (99.71, at home) vs Tyrone (89.95)
Hard to believe that one of the 2 giants of Ulster football will be gone from the USFC by mid-May. Donegal had an excellent league and won't be too perturbed by their loss to Cork in the League semi-final. Tyrone struggled and battled but it wasn't enough to avoid the drop to Division 2. Although there is a relatively big difference in rating points, games between these 2 are traditionally tight. Donegal by 2

  • Registered Users Posts: 980 ✭✭✭laoisman11

5 results after this weekend's games:
    • Westmeath gained the most rating points over the weekend (+4.88 points) and rise 6 places in the rankings to 19th (although it was previously noted that there was little between 20th and 25th place)
    • Louth are now at their lowest ranking since May 2005 (28th)
    • Longford jump 3 places to 20th following their win in Tullamore while Offaly drop 3 places to 25th
    • Tyrone fall 2 places to 9th after dropping 0.85 rating points to Donegal, who strengthen their position in 3rd
    • Galway's win over Leitrim did not affect either team's ranking, although 0.56 rating points were exchanged
    • No rating points were exchanged following Laois's facile victory over Carlow

One game each in Munster, Connacht and Ulster this weekend.....

Clare (74.50, at home) vs Limerick (74.75)
Both teams were probably hoping for a better return from Division 3, but both remain there for another season. Clare, with home advantage, just get the nod. Clare by 2

London (61.07, at home) vs Roscommon (87.34)
Roscommon are a team on the up, as reflected in their move into the top 10 and Div 1. London appear to have regressed slightly in the last few years and will find it tough against a Roscommon side with significant firepower. Roscommon by 12

Cavan (80.25, at home) vs Monaghan (95.60)
Cavan finished mid-table in Division 2 without ever setting the world alight, while Monaghan more than held their own in Division 1. A much superior rating point difference points to a fairly comfortable Monaghan win, but the prediction model thinks that it will be fairly tight. Monaghan by 2

  • Registered Users Posts: 980 ✭✭✭laoisman11

    • Clare gained 2.45 rating points and move up a place in the rankings following their close-fought win over Limerick, who drop 2 places to 24th
    • Monaghan increase their rating points total by 0.53 and edge closer to the top 5, although neither Monaghan nor Cavan move places in the overall rankings
    • No rating points were exchanged in the Roscommon - London game

Three more games this weekend.......and if all the favourites were to win, there would be a minimal effect on the overall rankings.

Tipperary (81.21, at home) vs Waterford (58.02)
A big gulf in class between these 2 in terms of rating points, although it's not that long since games between Tipp and Waterford were difficult to call. Tipp will be looking to win this well and to gauge their progress against Kerry. Waterford may be left hoping for a kind draw in the qualifiers. Tipperary by 9

Fermanagh (78.39, at home) vs Antrim (69.03)
Hard to see Antrim getting out of Brewster Park with a win. Fermanagh had an excellent Division 3 although they would have been disappointed to lose the final. Antrim could have secured promotion in their final game of the league but let the opportunity slip. All the same, the prediction model says that there won't be much between the teams. Fermanagh by 4

Dublin (104.31, at home) vs Longford (77.46)
Almost 30 rating points separate these sides (taking into account Dublin's home advantage). Longford did top division 4, losing to Offaly in the final before exacting revenge in the championship preliminary round. Dublin's sights are set much further than the championship in May, and as long as they keep their concentration, they should progress very comfortably. Dublin by 14

Very little change to the rankings following this weekend's games as all the favourite came through.

The only game which resulted in a ratings exchange was the Fermanagh-Antrim contest, with Fermanagh gaining 0.79 points. Antrim drop one place as a result of this loss.

Just 2 games this weekend before the Championship explodes into life next weekend.

    Laois (81.92) vs Kildare (81.32)
Effectively nothing between these teams in terms of rating points, and holding the game at a neutral venue does not swing the predicted result one way or another. The teams played a close competitive match in the league with a late Kildare goal paving the way for victory. Kildare appear to have lost some players in recent times, although the prediction model can't pick this up (so I've a sneaky feeling for a Laois win, although I have been known to be biased, especially when dealing with our dear neighbours). The prediction model (non-biased) says: Draw

Derry (88.95, at home) vs Down (82.92)
Two teams who recently traded positions between Divs 1 and 2. It's hard to know who gained more from their league campaigns: Derry, playing at a higher pace but losing, or Down, playing against weaker teams and winning. Winning normally breeds success, and Derry are notoriously unpredictable. Nonetheless, the prediction model is pointing towards Derry. Derry by 4

The record of teams relegated from Division 1 in the same year's championship has been abysmal, while teams who have gotten promoted from Division 2 generally have a very decent record in the same year's championship.

It certainly feels like the SFC is really kicking off this weekend with 7 games to be played and the first appearance of 5 of the current top 10......

    Laois (81.80) vs Kildare (81.44)
Nothing between these teams last week and this game is likely to be very close again. Whichever team learns most from last weeks mistakes (and there were plenty on both sides) will come up trumps. The prediction model is going to have to be wrong at some stage, because at the moment, it is again predicting: Draw

Armagh (89.28, at home) vs Donegal (98.56)
Will Armagh have picked up some "bad habits" (as K. McGeeney put it) after their quick visit to Div 3 or can they really put it up to Donegal? It will be interesting to see how Armagh have been moulded in recent months and how they cope with Donegal's intensity. Home advantage for Armagh adds an extra spice, the model says: Donegal by 2

Tipperary (81.21, at home) vs Kerry (99.47)
Tipperary are coming, of that there is no doubt, but a challenge to the All-Ireland champions may be too early in their development. Kerry roll out some of the big guns while keeping others in storage. Kerry by 6

Cork (96.91, at home) vs Clare (76.95)
Will the real Cork please stand up? Cork still remain in the top 5 teams in the country, and as such, should be serious contenders for Sam. Yet everyone has written them off. Clare struggled against Limerick and it is very hard to see them compete well with a team which (should) have something to prove to themselves. Cork by 10

Meath (89.27, at home) vs Wicklow (61.29)
Meath start no fewer than 6 debutantes, and how that will affect the outcome of this game is very hard to gauge. They may have been in trouble against some of the more seasoned Leinster competitors, but against Wicklow, especially at home, there can only be one winner. Meath by 11

Westmeath (78.29, at home) vs Wexford(73.42)
Westmeath had a solid early win over Louth while Wexford make their entry after a poor league. Both were relegated, but Westmeath remain a division above Wexford. Here, however, Westmeath with home advantage should just about swing it. Westmeath by 3

Galway (86.02, at home) vs Mayo (96.64)
The loss of Shane Walsh is a major set-back for Galway, they really needed all their stars, and everyone playing to optimum to mount a challenge to the holders of the last 4 Connacht championships. Mayo under new management will be keen to continue winning ways. But only just. Mayo by 2

Quite a few changes to the rankings following the 7 games this weekend......
    • Kildare's bonus point win over Laois gains them 4.61 rating points and they jump 3 places in the rankings. Laois, meanwhile, drop to 20th, their worst ranking since September 2010.
    • Donegal gain 2.62 rating points and leapfrog Kerry into 2nd position
    • Mayo also move up one place after their 4 point win over arch-rivals Galway
    • Westmeath advance 3 places to 16th (their highest position since June 2013) while Longford Wexford enter the bottom 10
    • The Cork-Clare, Tipperary-Kerry nor Meath-Wicklow games cause an exchange of rating points as there were more than 15 rating points difference between the teams

Six more games to look forward to this weekend; could there be a shock in store in this to-date season of normality ? Please ??

London (61.07, at home) vs Cavan (79.72)
London battled bravely but in futility against Roscommon, and while Cavan might not consider themselves as advanced as the Rossies, they should still have too much in reserve to overcome the Exiles. Cavan by 11

Waterford (58.02, at home) vs Offaly (70.34)
Waterford were completely outclassed by Tipperary in their opener and unfortunately don't appear to have the resources to compete at this level. Offaly traditionally perform extremely poorly in the qualifiers although they did seem to be particularly disappointed to lose out to Longford, especially after their Div 4 victory over the same opposition. The Faithful to remain in the championship for now. Offaly by 6

Laois (77.19, at home) vs Antrim (68.24)
Laois's implosion in the 6 minutes after half-time of the Kildare replay is rewarded with the visit of Antrim to Portlaoise. Antrim will be ultra-defensive but the return from their attack against Fermanagh (2 points from play) left a lot to be desired. If Laois are in the right frame of mind, they should overcome this challenge and try to build some momentum. If they are still nursing a hangover and tiredness from the last 2 weekends, this could be closer than most people think. Laois by 4

Longford (77.46, at home) vs Carlow (60.92)
Hard to look past Longford for this game. They disposed of Offaly and went head to head with the Dubs with a predictable outcome. A similar style of play here could see them winning by the same margin as what they conceded to Dublin. The prediction model says: Longford by 7 (although I think it could be closer to 15)

Sligo (77.02, at home) vs Roscommon (87.34)
It's slightly difficult to gauge the form of the last team to enter the championship as it's been a while since their last competitive outing. They have 4 debutantes for this game, and have also dropped Coen from the panel for "disciplinary reasons". Roscommon don't appear to have such distractions and should make it though to challenge Mayo in the final. Roscommon by 3

    Monaghan (96.13) vs Fermanagh (79.18)
Monaghan just about snook past Cavan and I have the feeling that that close game will bring them on a lot. Fermanagh made hard work in disposing of Ulster's weakest team (Antrim) and may the find the going extremely tough here. Monaghan by 5
