Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I don't think it matters that the ball was going wide. The player wasn't to know that which is why he handled it. He's trying to prevent a goal. Red card without doubt.

If you say anything remotely negative about Arsenal, even if it's completely justified, you can expect Quazzie to be staunchly defending them.

We've been absolutely shít today. Terribly poor right from the start, and Chelsea tactically beat us fair and square. It was a definite peno, but I don't agree that it should've been a red.

Enjoyed that as much as you can enjoy a Mourinho win.

Arsenal let down again by having a forward of Giroud's.....eh 'quality'. Would have been different if he had taken his chance.

Classless from Mourinho, I'm sure he'll get slated by the media...oh wait:rolleyes:

So if the ball is going in and a player tries to handle the ball and misses it's a red because he tried to prevent the ball going in? Good to know.

He went down the tunnel before the final whistle. As he does a lot these days. Not sure that Wenger would have wanted the embarrassment of that final whistle handshake today anyway.

Of course it does. If he's just standing there and doesn't move his arm out and the ball hits his hand it's not a penalty. He intentionally handles the ball so it's a pen and a red card :)

That situation is covered by another caveat in the rules though.

That's a serious bumming for the arse. Midfield and shrike force need serious surgery this summer

How's the ref meant to know that it's going wide? Look, you can't really have any complaints here. The player knew what he was doing.

Isn't any deliberate handball a red or have I that mixed up?

So now we're not supposed to judge it from what we can see?

A deliberate handball is not a red card. It never has been. In Fifa's Laws of the Game 2005, Law 12 says a free-kick or penalty will be awarded if a player handles the ball deliberately.

It states latter on "Referees are reminded that deliberately handling the ball is normally punished only by a direct free-kick or penalty kick if the offence occurred inside the penalty area. A caution or dismissal is not normally required."

So why is it a red card?

Great manager, but if he was the finest in world football, he probably wouldn't have failed at Real, the side with the biggest budget in world football

Circumstances and a toxic situation. Still though he did win a league and Cops Del Rey against the greatest team of their generation.

He has to make a likelihood judgement so. No refereeing decision (or any judgement call really) is ever without uncertainty.

Wengers suicidal tactics played right into his hands.
Every man and his dog knew how Chelsea would setup today and Wenger played right into his hands with his high back line and weak central midfield.
Mourinho couldnt believe his luck I'd imagine.

So would you say he was wrong to think it was going in?

There was two people that thought it was going at least, the goalkeeeper and the Ox, both tried to stop the effort, one did.

Was the ball going in? It's a pretty simple question.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,117 ✭✭✭✭Quazzie

But it doesn't matter what anyone thought*. The fact is it wasn't. Steve Mcmanamin even stated there that he doesn't think it should've been a red card.

    *except the ref

How does he know anything? How does he know that a player will go and score instead of the keeper saving it when he's hauled down by the last defender.

Lads, it's a red card ffs. The player knew what he doing. He though the ball was going in. The ref thought it was going in. It's his own fault he was sent off, nobody else's. You's have more to be worried about than this.

A deliberate handball in the box.

Circumstances and a toxic situation. Still though he did win a league and Cops Del Rey against the greatest team of their generation.

Circumstances, you could argue that his abrasive management created.

Granted, he had huge competition in Barcelona, but that doesn't explain the lack of European success, or his failure last season when Barca were at their lowest ebb in a long time

So because the referee thought it was going in that makes it a correct decision? If the referee thinks someone is offside and calls it offside, and all the replays show that he wasn't offside does that mean the right call was made?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 12,535 Mod ✭✭✭✭Amirani

So would you say he was wrong to think it was going in?

Given the evidence available to him, not necessarily. In his position, the obvious thought would be that it's going in, based on Oxlade-Chamberlain's reaction if nothing else.

In hindsight, yes, he was wrong.
