The article on Michael Nugent's blog (here) seems to suggest that it is

Never thought of the pin through the dress. I'll leave it up to them whether they want to wear it or not.

Totally stuck between two completely different styles of wedding dress. Have pretty much narrowed it down to two dresses, both gorgeous in their own way, but styles are completely different. Anyone any tips on deciding factors?! There is quite a difference in price between them, but it's not unmanageable and I'd probably resell anyway. Any thoughts appreciated!

Hmmmm, what about getting opinions from family/friends?
I found when I was stuck between two dresses, it was easy to decide with my mam/mammy-in-law there to help!

Also, think about what kind of accessories you want to wear with it, what jewellery/veil/headpiece you really like and maybe they'll suit one dress over the other?

18th March today and my big day is 18th April, think I'm going to vomit, hahaha!

My friend is making my bridesmaids dresses as my present and she'll have them completed this weekend. I saw them two weeks ago when they were only tacked together and they looked amazing even then!

Going for my final dress fitting on the 4th and am under strict instructions from my alteration lady to not lose or gain any weight after then :p

Think I'm pretty much sorted for everything else, just have to finalise times with hair and make up people etc.

Paid off our honeymoon on the weekend, my poor OH's credit card nearly went on fire. We're going to Japan, it's somewhere we've always wanted to go and I cannot bloody wait!!!

Same nosietoes. I know my mam would definitely not want to put a pin through her nice expensive new dress. But I don't think she'd fancy a corsage either so its best just to leave it.

Corsages are more old school, and like this work if you don't want to use a pin. I gave the options to the bridesmaids if they wanted bouquets or corsages.. They went with bouquets..

Anywho with the pins, it is great now there are so many options you can get magnets for the buttonholes, different styles or pins ... I was thinking the same with himselfs waistcoat as the pin would prick it as such, I was thinking some like maybe those plastic things you get when you get a new shirt like the plastic things, to put it on that but then mum was saying the magnets work a charm...

Thanks Milly! To be honest I'm not a big fan of corsages anyways so leaving them out isn't a hardship. Himself has decided that he wants pocket squares with no boutonnieres so at least that's one less thing to stress about!

I haven't seen people wearing corsages at weddings since the early 1990's!

I've never seen anyone wearing them ...and I've been alot of weddings

I like pocket squares too! Seen them at one wedding. Where do you get them, do they come with the suit? Milly great tip about using magnets instead of pins :-)

What are the styles and prices? I was stuck between 4 I brought my Mam along to the shops. Tried 1 in the first shop she immediately slammed the first one, the second one she said it was lovely (but cost 3 grand). In the next shop she said that one was 'equally as nice if not nicer than the 3k one' and it was only 1200. In the final shop I had back fat in it coz it was a size too small for me to be honest as soon as I put it back on myself, I knew it was out. So we got the 1200 one. It's A-line with lace sleeves. For me having a sleeve is a must just to make me feel more comfortable about my arms. I was told no photos but I insisted on taking one the 2nd time around and I whatsapped to my sister and she said 'stunning' so that was that! I also got a good few opinions from friends before that (although I wasn't allowed to take photos I found a photo of a model wearing the dress on their website) and they all liked it (photo of my guna attached)

Beautiful dress sticky! I absolutely fell in love with a dress very similar to yours when I was dress shopping. Couldn't wait to try it on. Talk about disappointment! I looked awful in it. I ended buying a dress I never would have picked from the rail but the sales assistant knew her stuff.

I’ve gone shopping twice now, first on my own and then second time around with my mum and bridesmaids. The second time around really helped to narrow it down. Got it down to three on the day, but in thinking about it after I’ve pretty much discounted one of them (which I originally thought I was going to go for).. so now it’s down to 2.

One is more of a boho look.. it has a really lovely fit, is light and comfy, lovely colour., and gorgeous detail on the back.... more of an ethereal look.. wasn’t one I thought was a real contender the first time, but trying it on the second time, I really did think it was a beautiful dress. The other is much more modern.. again a really lovely fit, more fitted than the other but also light and comfy, less of a train too, also lovely detail on the back, its quite a different kind of a dress...classic with a bit of an edge, also probably a bit more va voom! I liked this the first time, and probably liked it more the second time. Everyone loved both dresses. They’ve a lot of similar qualities but couldn’t actually be more different in style. There’s about a grand in the difference in price, so quite a difference, but apparently the more expensive dress has good resell potential.. So I’m trying to essentially decide which look I want to go with on the day. Not allowed take photos either. Kinda thinking I might go back one more time on my own to see which I feel the best in?

Your dress is beautiful, so nice to have it sorted! :)

Thanks, oooh that's a tough one - Mum and bridesmaids loved BOTH dresses!! That's no help they should have made a call!!

The obvious choice would be the cheaper one if they're both equally nice. So I'm going to do a 'Monty from Say Yes to the Dress Atlanta' on you now....if today was your wedding day and you were wearing the cheaper dress, would you be thinking about the other one?? That's the question you have to ask yourself. If not, then go for the cheaper one for sure (I wouldn't be letting resale value come into it - dunno how successful most brides are at reselling their dress?)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,531 ✭✭✭kildareash

Oh sticks, your dress is fabulous! I love that style.

someone advised me to make sure I cld sit down in the dress. Obviously hers wasn't very comfy to sit in. My MIL kept making me do squats in the last shop we were in. I looked ridiculous!

Comfort was a big factor in my dress...I have two small kids so I needed something that I cld still semi function as mammy in.

And my other piece of advice is buy the dress that needs the least alteration.

I'm off work for a couple of weeks and I feel like I shld be doing more wedding prep. Need to get the to do list out and see if there is anything left.

The thoughts of shopping for my dress is 'wrecking my head'. Its the 2nd time around for both of us so I am not sure what I want! My sisters have said to leave it another couple of months and we will blitz the shops and see what's out there. I like the tea length but Im not sure if it will do anything for me - only one way to find out - although if I hate it I am really stuck!

Another thing I was adamant about was that I could go to the bathroom on my own, I think this is doable, I might have to go to my own room to go as the door in the normal bathrooms mightn't close but I'll still not have to bring anyone with me. I just couldn't even imagine that for me to be honest. I kinda jumped up and down in mine to make sure I could dance in it, I know I'll be dancing a lot so that was a factor for me.

Less than a month, LESS THAN A MONTH. I actually had a horrible dream last night about the wedding, I was wearing boots with my dress as someone had left my shoes somewhere else and I only had boots with me. The mass booklets were all wrong and had other people's names on them. I woke up sweating after it :O

I keep having mad wedding dreams as well....but mine aren't those kind of panic ones...mine are totally random. I dreamt that OH's friend invited me on a date and he said I could go but I was wracking my brains trying to decide if it was appropriate to be going on a date when the invites to my wedding have been sent out?!

Sounds like your heart has been stolen by the cheaper one (sorry for calling it that but you didnt' indicate whether it was the boho or other one that was less expensive)

This was a factor for me too in my dress choice after hearing about a family friend who spent €2,500 on her dress, needed help to walk up the aisle in it and needed two people to go to the bathroom with her...

Oh yikes I didn't even think about going to the bathroom in my dress.....any chance we could be hooked up with a colostomy bag for the day? haha
I suppose it depends more on what lengths you go to with shaping underwear doesn't it? I've heard of a steel reinforced body suit from M&S that fastens at the crotch like a babygro, and magc knickers that go from under your armpits to your knees. If you were wearing both of those I'd imagine it'd be hard enough to go to the loo unaided regardless of the dress? One good thing about the style of my dress is I don't need any of that stuff - if only there was spanx for arms!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

I'm not bothering much with Spanx etc - dress is boned in the bodice and has a full skirt so I don't think I need a huge amount more! Non-zero probability of taking the either the comfy knickers or white compression shorts option...

Yes for those of us with full skirts and bodices (thank god for them!) it's upper arms we need to focus on between here and the wedding!! Anyone got any good tips? I've started doing girly pushups every night, I can barely manage 5 in a row but I do 3 reps of 5. I need more drastic measures though! I have a bolero on standby which is wearable with the dress - dress is much nicer without it of course esp for June wedding - but if needs be it can be donned and doesn't not-match with dress

Swimming (generally 3 times a week and I average around 2k each time) has done wonders for mine - bingo wings almost completely gone at this stage. Doing a 3km open water swim 6 days before my wedding so will be training away right up to it!

Generally though, proper upper body free weight exercises will help - bench press, bent-over rows, overhead press, assisted pull-ups etc.

Get some dumbbells and do some Pilates classes that focus on upper body strength...can work wonders! You can follow classes on YouTube for free and some focus just on the arms!

30 day shred? Keep at the push ups, you will increase your ability to do more as your core strength improves.

Great tip, gonna get on that straight away about the swimming....never even thought of that! I don't know what these are: bench press, bent-over rows, overhead press, assisted pull-ups etc I do have a gym membership but I think I'd need a session with a personal trainer to go through what those are

Here's where we are having music...

    Entrance
    Lighting of candles(short instrumental)
Lighting of memorial candle (short poem to instrumental)
Responsorial psalm (unless you think a member of the congregation would like to read one
    Lighting of marriage candles(short instrumental)
Offertory procession(instrumental works best here, I think)
Communion(depending on size of congregation, 2 pieces might be needed here)
    Reflection (optional)
Signing of register(this can take time, there's usually photo taking afterwards, so best to have two prepared here)
Recessional piece (something nice and lively works well here)

Any chance you'd share which pieces of music you picked for these!? I've finally finished all the big ticket items and am now moving onto the small details - like picking the music - nice jobs :-)

Looking at the flights home for the wedding and I feel like giving Aer Lingus the frowning of a lifetime. The perfectly timed flight for us has been resolutely £77 before checked bags for the last six months (very excessive on any London-Shannon route) and shows no sign of moving. It's actually working out cheaper overall to fly BA to Dublin and get the train to Limerick. Times don't suit us at all on Ryanair on the day we want to fly and we have a lot of luggage to take because once we leave London we're gone for nearly 3 weeks...

To put it in context for you, it's costing us over $2000 to fly home for our wedding. £77 is an absolute bargain! :)

Speaking of ceremonies, has anyone any tips for the Dublin Registry Office?

We've done a walk round of the general area, but I've never been into the building.

    What's the waiting area like?
What's the length of the minimum bare bones ceremony? (I can then estimate ours a bit better by adding on anything we put in)

Is there any opportunity to set up the room a bit? Mostly to have a little music. The registrar said there's a cd player available but she wasn't sure about anything else.

Are we meant to tell them about any readings or anything in advance or do they just ask in the middle of the ceremony?

I've only been to one civil ceremony before and that was in a hotel and a long time ago, so I don't have much of an idea what to expect on the day.

Rainbow kirby Ask a travel expert. Fares are normally high six months in advance, then they drop and rise as you get closer to date and depending on demand. Although you are in April aren't you?

Have you set up a kayak alert?

Oh me too! I've had dreams where I've forgotten to get unity candles and had no flowers at the church! Had a dream over the weekend that there was another wedding on at the church which ran over which meant that everyone was waiting outside for it to finish when I arrived! My OH thinks it's hilarious as the weddings over 6 months away.

Late May. Our wedding is on a UK bank holiday weekend, but we plan to fly back the Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning/afternoon before it which is generally early enough to negate bank holiday ripoffs.

@Faith - total first world problems I know, but still a bit annoying!

    Oh totally!

I was trying to book our flights last night and I got an email saying my card had been declined. So I replied to the booking website, asking them to try again. Got a call within 30 minutes from an agent (at about 10pm his time), checking the details and promising to try again first thing in the morning and phone me back. Sure enough, he's just phoned me and confirmed the card was fine this time :D. Bless him, he said he'd phone at 9am and I asked him to phone earlier because I have a meeting at 9. On the phone just there, he said "now you can have your meeting without being stressed about this" :). It was one of those slightly dubious sounding booking websites that you find through sky scanner but I'd absolutely recommend them now! And they were $300 cheaper than booking directly with BA!

Aghhh, it all feels so real now!!

We looked at a few of those for the honeymoon through Skyscanner, but ended up getting a better deal with United directly than with anyone else for our honeymoon flights.

We also milked the crap out of the fact that flying transatlantic from Ireland is a lot cheaper than going from the UK - saved around £200 each by booking a return that is ticketed all the way back to Shannon on the way home.

The same happened for us too. It was cheaper to book from dublin to cancun via london than to book from london to cancun with the same flights.

The perfectly timed flight for us has been resolutely £77 before checked bags for the last six months (very excessive on any London-Shannon route) and shows no sign of moving. It's actually working out cheaper overall to fly BA to Dublin and get the train to Limerick. Times don't suit us at all on Ryanair on the day we want to fly and we have a lot of luggage to take because once we leave London we're gone for nearly 3 weeks...

i have a tip for you for aer lingus i'll pm you

I started doing these exercises for my arms http://www.prevention.com/fitness/strength-training/best-moves-tone-arms-fast
I so hope they work! My dress is a sheath so arms, tummy and hips need to tone up! Oh yeah and lose about a stone!!

What's a sheath? Thanks I did them tonight, they're good alright! And not too many of them. Only thing is I have kettle bells not dumb bells, it's a little hard to some of those exercises with kettle bells but I managed. We're on a diet in this house, normal breakfast, normal lunch and then dinner is soup OR salad. Oh and obviously not eating any crap but I stopped that as soon as I booked the wedding 2 months ago, the soup/salad thing only started last week! It's hard but shur it's now or never !! Am also thinking about celebrity slim, anyone done those?

It's a body skimming style. No corset to pull you in or skirt to disguise my hips! Mine is a beaded chiffon and I adore it but toning is essential

I've tried Celeb slim and it works short term but you're better off getting your diet and exercise sorted. That said, I am freaking out because although I'm gymming 3 times a week I can't keep my hands off the rubbish that is constantly at work, it's so hard and I would never buy that stuff! That and the fact I chose my dress on my own, I'm starting to freak out that I never got a second opinion-I hope it's lovely when it comes!
Sticky your dress is fab, so beautiful. When is your wedding?
