    Kieran Dennison - FG
    Current Mayor of Fingal afaik

He was a candidate in the last general election, as was McGuinness. Dennison performed significantly better but FF have made up some ground so if the two of them stood in the by-election it could be a lot closer this time. I'd still expect Dennision to come out on top though. Not sure what other candidates there are likely to be, particularly for Labour.

In all fairness, neither Burton or Varadkar are going to want anyone possibly impeeding on them getting votes in the next election, it'll be tight for them both. Could SF get the seat?

Anyone else got bye-election fatigue? Second in under 5 years zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Nulty was the product of the last one..well done on electing him :P

According to the radio tonight, bye-election likely to be same day as Local Elections ie May 23rd. I have a problem with this as most/all the candidates are likely to run in the locals too meaning a co-option if they get elected to both. Pretty undemocratic IMO

I totally agree. Any chance that I'd ever vote for Joe Higgins again was blown after the 2009 elections where he stood in both the local and European elections. He knew he was a shoo-in for a council seat and had a good chance of getting voted into Europe. He managed both and then had a party member co-opted into his local council seat. Two years later he did exactly the same thing when he was elected to the Dáil and another of his colleagues replaced him in Europe. I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of people voted for Joe rather than his party and wouldn't have given his colleagues much thought, but ultimately ended up "electing" an extra Socialist Party councillor and MEP.

    No. No. No.

Another opportunity to kick FF where it hurts after driving this Country into bankruptcy.

All the current joblessness can be laid fairly and squarely at their feet. They had everything and blew it. They foisted debts onto our shoulders, and our childrens shoulders. Now our well educated young people have to emigrate to get a job.

FF should have disbanded after the last election. A party of chancers, liars, gombeens, cute hoores and crooks.

Exactly who I meant. Once was hard to take but a second time was unforgiveable. The ultimate "jobs for the boys" game.

Its funny how quickly we move on, no one even mentioned being disappointed at losing Nulty's representation for reasons of addiction and personal responsibility!

I'm disappointed, I thought he was a good rep and very active. However no question he had to go immediately.

As for a replacement, prepare to be bewildered on election day, there will probably be at least 4 ballots in the Dublin West stations - local, european, bye-election and mayoral plebiscite. Busy weekend for the election staff!

Hard to know who will get the seat, could be a yet unknown independent due to the plague on all parties, and people are certainly fed up with Higgins and Co messing and falling out and co-opting here and there

My money would be on a Shinner in a shiny suit. Try saying that after a few shandies.

I doubt the government will happen on the same day as the local election, logically it makes sense, I just don't think time will allow it to happen.

According to the Irish Times this morning it's most likely to be in the autumn. This would allow them to hold any other bye elections necessary due to TDs being elected as MEPs on the same day.

I am curious why different standards apply to TDs like Mr. Nulty and Cabinet ministers such as Phil Hogan.

Nulty had a standard of personal responsibility? Also, his wasn't to a minor.

In the context of this thread former Deputy Nulty represented Dublin 15 and Minister Hogan didn't. In real life...a "lewd" remark is a million miles away from sending "adult" messages to a 17 year old, asking another woman for her underwear and generally making inappropriate comments and approaches to constituents.

As someone who's lived in D15 for a decade now, I was amazed at how Nulty went from being constantly in touch with constituents, leaflet drops, canvassing etc...to nothing since he won the Bye-Election. I won't miss him.

    Why did he really resign?
Like let's look at Gerry Adams??
    And what he did
    Mick Wallace the bankrupt TD
Michael Lowry Charles Haughey the list is endless
If the TD all followed his standard the Dail may very well be empty

Either the under 18 aspect or the fact that he did what he did from Leinster House, or both.

The by-election is between Fianna Fail, The Socialist Party and Sinn Fein. As Sinn Fein has never got any kind of foothold in the area, that really just leaves the contest between Fianna Fail and The Socialist Party.

Looks like David Hall may be set to throw his hat into the ring.

He could turn out to be a very strong candidate.

I would say opinion is split down the middle on him between those who are in mortgage arrears and struggling, and those that bought a modest house well within their means taking potential job losses into consideration when taking out a mortgage.

ThisRegard is correct. Allot of people are not happy about how he also got debt write offs for people were still in full employment, but chanced their arm on the fact they were in negative equity.

    Opinion will split even further when news of his previous membership of FIanna Fail and close association with Brian Lenihan (the man who created the mortgage mess that Hall claims to be fixing) becomes well known;

That's why he is testing the water before deciding if he will run or not.

It would be quite something if a constituency with high levels of social housing and pockets of poverty managed to elect a person who was successful in getting sweetheart deals from the banks for select groups of people in the know. In effect, a man who robs the poor to pay the rich winning an election.

This is very true, but it would be likely that he would be afforded a disproportionate amount of media air time due to his existing profile, and he'll know this could help give him a head start on other candidates.

It does look like he is very much testing the water at the minute before committing.

No need to add anything. Just pointing out similarities between two pigs who hold public office. What is your issue with me doing that?
