Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The Samsung 8000 line has a metal finish on the back and a cover for the cables, voice control etc.

    I just want a great picture :(

    Probably not possible?

As you go up the price scale you tend to get more bells and whistles. That's how the market works, same with cars.

You could look at buying an upmarket monitor but these would tend to be bought by training companies and people who hire out AV gear to companies for big employee meetings and product launches so you may have to pay a premium because it's not a mass market product.

Figured as much - had the same problem buying a microwave before.

It is annoying also that the high end tv's all come with the chrome stands, I much prefer the matted ones....

Metal finish and a cover for the cable are "bells and whistles"?

And here I thought this was going to be about 3D and gesture recognition.

Look at the finish on the back of this - fair enough it looks unreal but still....I'd consider it "somewhat" of a "bells and whistles" type thing for lack of a better term.

There are , or used to be , professional panels from the likes of panasonic , and continuing the analogy with cars , these are the stripped down performance giants , with eyewatering prices !

If you think getting a panel with a good picture and nothing else means dropping the price of the "bells and Whistles" , think again , these panels typically sell at a massive premium. Nothing about them is cheap , and every single connection you would like to use to the Panel comes at an "extra" price in the form a module for that connection.

Regardless of the type of panel bought , to get the best picture quality out of it you need to have the panel independantly calibrated , that usually costs approx 200 or so .... thats the only way to make sure the panel is producing accurate images , and no , its not a matter of taste , its a matter of right and wrong , picture quality has standards ( Rec 709 etc. ) and your panel is either correct to that standard or its not.

In terms of being able to accurately calibrate a panel , there are grades of whats possible depending on the actual panel technology.

LCD ( regardless of the type of backlight ) is the worst performer.

Plasma are better , but no-ones making them anymore because they are too expensive to produce , the last champion of this superior tech was panasonic and they have stopped.

OLED ( not the lies , the real LED technology ) which is just coming on the market now , are very expensive , and have the best picture quality ever seen on home panels.

To get an idea of whats involved with calibration , have a read of some of the technical reviews over on Avforums. There isnt a TV or panel sold that doesnt benefit from calibration.
