    Yamaha RXV-375

    Hi folks,

I bought this amp from you guys last year, and while I'm very pleased with it - it's a fantastic amp - there's a few things that it doesn't do that I didn't realise I'd want it to :-)

It was the same when I got my 42" Philips tv from you guys years ago, I didn't realise that it
couldn't output Dolby Digital via it's SPDIF socket - but I didn't know I needed that at the time but I digress. Also as it's an (by todays standards) old PFL8404 it doesn't support an ARC channel over HDMI which would've sorted this out I guess....

The setup currently is that the UPC HD box / PS3 / BluRay Player go to the Amp first then are outputted to the TV via the amp's HDMI socket. Which means that if the amp is off there's no picture on the tv. TV doesn't have an ARC so can't pipe to that first and then to amp...

Basically, I'm wondering how much more an amp would cost that's basically the same as the 375 that would also:

    - Pass through all audio when the amp is off / in standby. Really we only need the surround sound for films / grown up TV - by which I mean that the kids don't really need 5.1 sound for Peppa Pig or Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. The amp is on whenever the tv is on as it *has to be*. Looking to reduce electric bills etc

    - Upscaling / passthrough of composite sources e.g. Wii, DVD Plaers etc. (this one of lesser importance).

    - Interested in playing music from my laptop / iPad / phone to it over blutooth. (again, this one is a nice to have more than a necessity). I do have a dongle that attaches to the old iPad type interface and receives via blutooth so even an amp with the older iPad / iPhone interface would do.

Again though, main thing is input select / audio passthrough when unit is off / in standby along with the option to change input.

So: Does the 475 do the above / would you do a trade in on it / if so how much / what are the options? Not really in a position to update the telly just yet - even though I think one with an ARC channel would solve this?

    Many thanks,

    Zaphod

    Hi Zap,

Apologies about the delay in getting back to you.

Your starting point is going to be the Onkyo TXNR626 at £279.00.  This offers HDMI pass through, analogue up conversion and built in WiFi and Bluetooth for your music streaming needs.

Check the link below for more info:
    http://www.richersounds.com/product/av-receivers/onkyo/txnr626/onky-txnr626-blk

Unfortunately we don't offer trade ins so we couldn't take the 375 of you.  You could pop it up on adverts.ie .  It's a nice amp so I'm sure you'll have no problems shifting it.

Let me know what you think about the 626.

    Chris

What would the options be if I just want the HDMI passthrough / input select in standby mode? (I.E. not wanting necessarily the network / wifi / blutooth etc)

Any of the Yamaha's do that?

    ZB,

the RXV375 is the only unit from Yamaha that ISN'T a network/smart receiver - If you wanted a cost effective receiver that will equate to your RXV375 and still offer you decent features then you are probably starting with the Sony STRDN840:
    http://www.richersounds.com/product/av-receivers/sony/strdn840/sony-strdn840

The Sony has been massively reduced and is now just £199.95 - it offers everything you are looking for ( except Bluetooth ( but it does have Airplay!) )

If you want a decent Yamaha the minimum you should look at would be the RXV575 at £269.95 ( I have one demo unit that I'd clear at £249.95), but realistically the RXV675 is sooooooooooooooooooooo much better that you would really have to look at this unit - its really exceptional and will give you a HUGE step up in both features but especially Audio quality over your RXV375.

It is more expensive at £345 but its a really special bit of kit!

Thanks again and keep us posted if we can assist,

Ok, just to be 100% sure before I put my Yamaha up for sale.. the Sony will

    - Pass through all audio / video signals in standby mode and allow source switching ** CRITICALLY IMPORTANT **
    - Upscale legacy composite signals (e.g. Wii) and output via HDMI (not as important)
    - Work with my iPad via Airplay
    - Support internet radio / services etc.

    It won't

    - Work with blutooth

    Hi Zaphodbeed,

The only thing the Sony wont do is upconversion for the Wii etc.  You could always just connect the Wii directly into the TV and then coax into the amp for audio :)

If that isn't a big issue then the Sony would be a nice amp to go for.
