Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Easy enough to do but does anybody have any knowledge of advantages/disadvantages of doing this?

He should try the new Android for Work app... Think Google just released it today... But should give you encryption, server tools and allow you to keep your work and personal separate...

I had my M7 and now my M8 encrypted because of work. Never noticed any real difference with it. Only thing is having an extra password at boot up and it increases the length of time to boot up the phone.

So M8ers when do you reckon we will get Sense 7

I don't think a date has been announced yet (just that the 'next update' will be Sense 7).

If you dabble in ROMs, you can get Sense 7 now.

    Just bought the phone.

Anybody here wishing they stuck to KitKat and didn't update to 5.0.1?

Read some people complaining about battery life after update, wondering how people here have found it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,537 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Same as KK (if not a little bit better). I really like lollipop, I think the UX is better than KK.

    Good to hear.

I've read bad stories from update about people having to clear cache or even having to go as far as factory reseting phone. But that update phone notification in the status bar is getting real annoying so I'll probably just go with it. Thanks for the reply!

I installed Lollipop clean (not an upgrade), so I can't guarantee you won't have issues.... :)

Have an M8 that was bought from Three. I use it a HUGE amount for work. The headphone jack and charging port have started giving me problems. I haven't used a case because of the build and I find them a little restrictive so it has a few scratches and chips and generally looks a bit worn. Long story short..

Has anybody had either of the above repaired under warranty? Just have a feeling they're going to hit me with water damage or claim misuse. Nothing out of the ordinary has happened to the phone but I understand water damage can be triggered quite easily from moisture etc.

Do they charge for repair automatically if the phone isn't under warranty?

    Ta!

I had a similar problem with my M8, and yes, it is usually to do with water damage. As soon as I started getting the problem, I chucked the phone in a container of rice overnight, and it didn't come back.

Regarding the repair, I think you get the choice if it isn't covered by warranty, whether you want to proceed or not.

    Cheers.

It's not had any direct contact with water other than a drop of rain here and there but I don't think they need to anyway. The water damage sensor looks ok and hasn't turned red but I'd imagine there's other sensors elsewhere.

Anyway I'll see what happens! Thanks

If you are in Dublin, drop it into SBE in greenogue business park and they will check it out and send it off for repair. Turn around time is 2 weeks.
I used them twice for M7 repairs since Xmas and didn't have to pay anything.

Anyone been experiencing total failure/freezing/restart while watching, or attempting to watch video's through Facebook, youtube or chrome?

Has happened me a few times, twice the phone just froze and i had to hard-reboot, and the third time the phone rebooted itself, after which i was prompted to send an android system error (ie not specific to any particular app)...

I've heard about that, apparently it only happens with porn :p

My dropbox space has expired and I don't think I want to pay the 100 per year to sign up. Is there another way of backing up your photos and that onto the net? I know google drive is an option but seems a bit more manual than the dropbox one (I just had it scheduled to back up any new photos every night).

I use www.mega.co.nz it's got 50GB free and is automatic... very useful

The (Google) Photos App does it for you now. It used to be the G+ app but the moved that functionality over recently.
It auto backs up for you and you can decide if you want it done on on wiFi/3G/WiFi + 3G.
Think it does it instantly when it has the relevant connection.

I was very kindly given a free year pro account on dropbox with 1TB storage, i seriously don't think I could go back!

That said, I've extended my free 25-50gb dropbox space a few times, by signing up for the free offer on different devices with a new email address, then switching the email addresses across.

Install google photos and turn on automatic upload. You should have gotten 100gb free storage with your m8.

    hi there,
exactly the same boat, although i started paying 9.99 for dropbox for handiness sake.
I have about 30gb of photos over the years up in dropbox but thinking about cancelling the 9.99 and closing account.
maybe i will just buy an external usb drive for the existing 30gb and use something like google photos to backup ones taken on my htc.
where can i see that they are backed up through a browser on a computer ?
    thx.

My M8 randomly stays silent when someone is calling when the phone is in my pocket , even though I have the volume up full , it just vibrates , anyone else having this problem , or know if it's a software or hardware problem ?

That happened me a few times but it rectified itself somehow. Found it handy though when out walking as I'd have headphones in & wouldn't necessarily hear ring-tone :)

My only issue now is with voicemail. If I miss a call I don't now receive a text saying you've missed a call from xyz or an alert re:voicemail message straight-away ; delay now of sometimes a full day.

Microsoft One Drive backs mine up. Slightly more useful than Dropbox if you use windows on your pc. The same experience on a phone. They gave me 2TB when I bought office.

Does anyone use mobilecover for the HTC?

I get billed 12.99 a month, which is meant to be the price for a Samsung or an Iphone, all other smartphones are meant to be half the price. (I know this makes little sense). But does anyone pay less?

If you caught any of the news from Google I/O last week, the new Google Photos app offers free unlimited storage....pretty big move from Google.

Battery life on my M8 is gone to crap in the last two weeks. Draining very quickly and taking an age to charge. Not even fully charging over night.

    Anyone else experiencing this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,537 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Wakelock Detector will tell you what's keeping your phone awake. Probably an app you recently installed or updated.

Thanks for that. Took the attached screenshots from that app, but it's not clear to me which app is causing the problem

Yes, the play store is universal. Any android phone should remember your apps when logging into your same account on a new device, along with your contacts etc.....assuming you use a google account for that stuff.

The Galaxy S3 mini is an absolute dog of a phone, it will be night and day difference when moving to M8.

Dont know about the not charging but i've definitely noticed the battery levels falling a lot quicker in the last few weeks. I changed my weather detection settings to try offset it and it seems to of helped.

Finally gave up on stock Lollipop last night, and put a version of Cyanogen on it instead, it's working so much better, no annoying lags on apps opening and switching screens.

Got the M8s last week, happy with it having come from a M7. Don't see any problems with as yet, comes with only 16Gb so you'll need a SD card to expand the memory.

    The difference between the two;

    Design and build: The same

The M8s and the M8 share the same design. That means you get the full metal unibody, with that lovely comfortable feel in the hand, one of the best pieces of smartphone design we've seen. It also comes in the same colours - gunmetal grey, silver and gold.

The M8s appears identical to the M8. If you're trying to pass off a cheaper handset as the more expensive, then you'll get away with it. We've spotted that the M8s is 146.41 x 70.61 x 9.55mm, fractionally larger than the 146.36 x 70.6 x 9.35 mm. The weight is the same at 160g.

Internals: M8s is 64-bit, larger battery

The HTC One M8s has a 64-bit octo-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset with 2GB of RAM. The original HTC One M8 had a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset with 2GB of RAM.

The newer model has newer hardware. The 615 is an octo-core chipset and is 64-bit compatible, so should offer greater efficiencies in power use, even if it's not as high level as the 801. It's designed for the mid-range, but is a solid performer.

The HTC One M8s has a 2840mAh battery, an increase in capacity over the 2600mAh of the M8. That should lead to slightly better endurance, but much will come down to how the hardware performs.

    Display: Glory all round

The HTC One M8s offers the same size and the same resolution at 1920 x 1080 pixels, 440ppi.

    Cameras: 13-megapixel step-up

The HTC One M8's biggest downfall was the camera. It introduced the Duo Camera setup with two lenses, using the UltraPixel 4MP sensor to capture images.

The new HTC One M8s swaps the UltraPixel sensor for a regular 13-megapixel sensor, but keeps the Duo Camera arrangement. That means it should offer all the innovative functions of the M8, without the limit on resolution.

The UltraPixel was a pretty good low light performer and the M8s will potentially lose this - it really comes down to how the 13MP sensor is handled. For some, the increased resolution will be a bonus. Sadly neither offers 4K video capture.

The front camera on both is the same at 5 megapixels.

    Software: Lollipop at launch

The HTC One M8s launches with Android 5 Lollipop and HTC Sense 6. Although you're getting the latest from Android, you're not getting Sense 7 which launched on the M9.

The HTC One M8 launched originally on KitKat, but was subsequently updated to Lollipop in early 2015.

    Price: One M8s is cheaper

Has anyone had a screen replaced by HTC? Does warranty still stand if they replace it or do out of warranty repairs cancel the two year guarantee?

Ball park figure would be nice.

Cist me 150. No idea on warranty.

Anyone else find it odd that you can't buy custom printed HTC Dot View cases? I assume HTC have it locked down that only they can make the case, but surprised anyway. Would have thought we'd be able to get custom jobs done.

Trying to restore my M8 to stock ROM from Cyanogen Rom nightly builds, my head is melted trying to get it restored, nothing works from any guides, the most irritating problem is when when ever I type in fastboot reboot-bootloader, it gets stuck on a <waiting for device> message. I have reinstalled drivers and all the usual things but nothing works

Are you actually in bootloader when running that command? I think if you have an adb connection, you can go adb reboot-bootloader

What speeds are you getting? I wasn't getting 4g from Vodafone for a while, something they has changed on my account that needed to be changed back.

Barring this, are you on a custom ROM? Could be a ROM issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,537 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Are you sure you're in a 4G area getting 4G speeds? 4G is patchy enough outside urban areas.

Have you ever seen a 4G icon (or LTE for some ROMs)?
