Ended up having to factory reset. There really is something to be said for having your games on an external hard drive.

Bummer. I had been putting off copying my games to an external drive for ages, but it has begun now. It would take days to re-download on my slow connection.

Had the console up and running again in 20 minutes. Way better than redownloaling everything.

A factory reset shouldn't clear your games unless you specify it.

I wonder will Smyths be doing a midnight opening for the One S? Nothing on website and nobody answering phone. The excitement is too much now the release is so near.

I wonder what demand will be like for them tomorrow.

I'd say demand will be decent enough, the Ultra HD Bluray player alone in the One S is reason enough to get one. Dedicated Ultra HD players start at just under 500 euro, Currys are selling Samsungs Ultra HD UBD K8500 for 600 euro.

Microsoft made my day when they announced that built in player, now I can finally make fully use out of my UHD TV.:D

Part of the reason of it being a cheap 4K player is that the One S only supports 4K with HDR10, it does not have the features to do the full Dolby Vision HDR standard that the Samsung and Panasonic 4K players can do.

That's why those players cost more, they are full spec 4K.

Quick question about games saved on external HD. Can these be moved to a different console if one was to change consoles?

My reading was that samsung and sony were both backing HDR10 and LG do DV but were promising an update to support HDR10 also. While many of the bigger film studios were pushing DV.

Has the porn industry expressed a preference for either one yet? That will pretty much settle the matter!!!!

is that old nugget still doing the rounds? that was thrown out at blu-ray/hddvd time as well, and was a myth then as well. may have been true for VHS when that was the main delivery mechanism for porn, but since widespread internet came along how influential really is that industry on physical (no pun) media? little or none i'd wager

I'm interested to see how it takes off. If you were in the market for a UHD player you'd be mad to buy anything else imo.

Yes, you can move them as much as you want. You'll see a message that the game is getting ready to start the first time you use a title.

I understand that and it makes no difference unless your TV is capable of displaying Dolby Vision, the majority of people with UHD sets can't make use of Dolby Vision HDR or any HDR, it's only since last year that sets on the market have had HDR capable screens. Also the standards are not truly finalised for HDR.

No UHD Blu-ray player does DolbyVision playback yet, so HDR10 is the default position with regard to UHD BD at the moment, discs will have to encoded with the DV extended information, but will also contain the necessary HDR10 bitstream information for playback on HDR10 only devices (Players and TVs).

Dolbyvision is very niche right now, with very limited support on Netflix and Amazon, along with LG and Vizio hardware support. That being said, some of it looks absolutely fantastic, but there's no frame of reference to compare it to UHD BD-wise until later on in the year, and even then not every manufacturer has got behind the Dolbyvision standard.

Obviously haven't got a hands-on with the UHD playback of the Xbox One S yet, but I suspect it'll do the job well, though there may be an issue for some with regard to HD audio if they've not got a HDCP2.2 compliant receiver (i.e. only a single HDMI output on the One S, ARC audio is notoriously picky with regard to bitsreams on some TVs etc)

Is anyone doing trade-in deals for the S over here?

I think Gamestop are giving you €160 off if you trade in a 500gb One or €200 for a 1Tb One against the S.

The UWP version of Groove is out now, with background audio.

It's pretty great, so much faster than the older version, navigating it is instantaneous, with none of the old "Ah, you're moving to a new screen, wait 30 seconds while I fetch your music collection from an old filing cabinet." It's also got the latest modes that came out recently on Windows 10.

It is, essentially, the Windows 10 app, so if you've used that, then you've used this.

The only problem with it so far is that it's pretty buggy. Crashed about 4 times so far, but one of those was expected. Going into the app for the first time will crash the app, so just go in again.

All in all, very worthwhile upgrade.

EDIT: Actually, it might only be live in the preview, I thought it was just generally available. Perhaps they're holding off until the bugs are fixed.

There looks to be stock of the One S available in loads of Gamestops at the minute. Shouldn't be to hard to pick one up today i'd say.

Hi guys. I'm a PS4 owner with a pay-packet that's burning a hole in my pocket. So I'm on the verge of impulse buying a One S. Help me make a more considered decision!

I had both a PS3 and 360 for years and always preferred the Xbox controller. In fact I prefer all three generations of Xbox controller over their Sony equivalent.

However I don't think I'm quite impulsive enough to splash out €400 for just that factor alone, so I'm looking for something else to hook me in. Backwards compatibility with a lot of 360 games is a huge draw as I still haven't played the likes of Red Dead yet. But how about upcoming exclusives? Is there anything exciting on the horizon?

I think GameStop will give you €240 for your PS4 so the One S will only cost you €160 :D

I think the main upcoming exclusives are Gears of War 4, Scalebound, Recore and Sea of Thieves.

Recore and Sea of Thieves (multiplayer pirate shenanigans) look really good, Scalebound I'm not so sure and Gears is Gears.
EA access is also worth looking into, you get a lot of games for €25 a year.

A really quick look around shows me these:

    Crackdown 3
    Dead Rising 4
    Forza Horizon 3
    Gears of War 4
    Halo Wars 2
    Phantom Dust
    ReCore
    Sea of Thieves
    State of Decay 2
    Scalebound
    Below
    Cuphead
    Gigantic

Personally, I'm looking forward to Crackdown, Forza Horizon, Recore, Sea of Thieves and Below. The others are worth keeping an eye on, I think.

In the interest of honesty, I should note that Crackdown 3 has the potential to be a total failure. Just a vibe I'm picking up from the total lack of information being released.

ReCore is being made by a Metroid Prime guy, and is along those lines, so that's me involved. Might not be everyones cup of tea though.

There's other games that I can't remember as well.

Also, every controller that you've ever held is a dirty peasant controller compared to the Elite controller. Expensive, but so so worth it.

Still heard nothing from Smyths regarding my One S pre order.

Edit: just got an 'in progress' e-mail. Phew.

Will current games be upscaled to 4K with the Xbox One S provided you have a 4K tv of course ?

Yes, everything is upscaled, unless of course, it's native 4k.
